I hate the city at this point. It's just so dirty and crowded. Perhaps if the people that lived and worked here took more pride in it, it wouldnt be so bad.
The only thing that I actually like about the city is it's diversity.
actually, many times it's the short timers (ie commuters and tourists) that treat it with such disrespect.
I NEVER liter. I am polite and respectful (even when I am walking fast enough to knock the oldies over ) and I LOVE my city.
millions of people converge on a small area daily...even the best sanitation system in the world couldn't keep it clean.

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
I am presuming you mean Manhattan when you say the city? I can deal with it for the day but I could not live there or even stay there for extended periods of time. To me, its too noisy, crowded, and not enough pretty open spaces (lawns etc).

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
I live in the city and really like it. I think its hard to really compare the two because if you are commuting to the city for work the few commuting hours a day are truly torture in the city. I could see how i would hate the city if I had to deal with commuting, the rush hour trains, hot subways to get around, parking, crowds of people pushing etc. It is TOTALLY different when you are here all the time. I love being able to walk to everything and not have to get in the car and drive to 10 different strip malls to get what i need. I love that there are a million restaurants i can walk to in two minutes - i love that if i need something to wear there are a million stores i can stroll to without stepping foot in an annoying mall (HATE Roosevelt field)...so anyway, my point is - i think the people that hate the city are looking at it from a totally different perspective.
I also find that depending on the area you are in it is a totally different lifestyle here than in many parts of LI - and its really not dirty - its only on the weekdays during rush hour or during lunch that all the commuters actually ruin the city. If you live in a nice building, in a nice area - it is actually much nicer sometimes that many parts of LI. JMO
ETA: I also love that DH never has to commute. I love that i can meet him for lunch - love that when he is done for the day he is right around the corner...

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
I don't hate it. I hate commuting to the city for work and I hate that it's such an ordeal just to get there on weekends.
I love the energy, museums, shopping, parks, and the convenience of everything. There is something going on for everyone every night.
That being said, DH and I decided it was in our best interest to move there. We are paying more for a smaller space but we feel our quality of life will go up. We don't own a house, we don't have a lot of possessions that we can't part with, our baby is small, so we figured, let's try it for a couple of years.

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
i love the city and i miss living there soo much! I hate having to drive everywhere....i think i am one of the few people that love the subway!
I think you have to live there or spend time in the not so touristy parts to get a true feel for the city.
If the only thing i experienced in the city was Rockefeller center at x-mass time, I would hate it too!!

Depends on what area. I hate midtown, Times Square, 5th ave, etc. I LOVE the village/ soho areas. And I hate when it's too crowded.

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
Funny! Dh and I talk about this a lot. We hate the city. I love it going there like it is fun to do things but never had the desire to live or work there. I commuted to school there and hate to commute. I hate that I have to pay for parking that I have plenty on Long Island. I hate that I can't find a spot when I go visit friends who live in the city. I hate traffic. I hate crowds. LOL This is not sounding positive. I love the city just never wanted to live/work there.

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
I have a love/hate relationship with the city
I worked in NYC for close to 15 yrs. I used to LOVE it when I was single...I loved going to bars/clubs and restaurants, and on dates.. hanging with my coworkers, etc. But then when I got married and more into my homelife, I started hating every aspect of working in NYC.. and after 9/11 I really started hating the commute more than anything. I never wanted to spend ANY of my weekends or 'off' time there and used to say that if I ever got lucky enough to stop working in Manhattan, I wouldn't miss it at all.
Well now I'm a SAHM... and while I don't miss the commute and I don't miss my job... I actually really DO miss the city... I think I appreciate it so much more now that I don't work there
DH LOVES the city, and we can't wait to take our son into Manhattan and expose him to all the wonderful things it has to offer

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
I love the city!!!!!! The commute to visit gets to me sometimes and I hate not having a place to hang my hat there anymore. DH doesn't like it so much. He'd rather be here where he can take a drive to the golf course on the weekends or tend to the house. We've both lived in the city for a few years.

I really truely do!!
I only go there if it is for Andrew.
Am I the only one?
Please do not take offense to this if you love the city etc.
It is just not exciting to me.
I love BEING in the city, but GETTING there is terrible. I can't stand riding cooped up on the train, nor do I love the traffic getting in by car. If you could just zap me into the city without having to drive/ride the train, that would be PERFECT.
ETA: I'm taking our niece into the city to see a b-way show for her sweet 16, so IMAGINE how thrilled I am to have to take the train. YAY! It's for a great cause though.

thank you!!!
its so rude imo when someone makes a post like this.
i wouldnt dream of making a "anyone hate LI?" post. obviously, this site has "LI" in the title, but i find it to be more of a New York board.
there are so many ppl on this site that live in the city.
i'm sorry, i'm not trying to be on a high horse, i just find it insulting is all.
Wow. That was soo nice of you. I don't think I was rude at all.
And people bad mouth LI all the time on this site on the Home Board. Take a look. And I do not get offended at all. To each is own.
i don't think i was mean at all. just stating my opinion, that i feel it is insulting & rude to make posts like this. i would say the same if someone made a "anybody hate long island?" thread. to me, bashing where someone chooses to create a home for themselves is just asking for drama. what good come come of a post like that. i have never seen any LI hating threads on here, i can see if somone was to make a thread about certain things they dont love about it, but not sucha broad statement as you hate it. you dont think its rude at all because you dont live here.
IMHO, I don't think she (5ofClubs) meant to start drama with this post. It's not an attack on your decision to make a home in the city - it's simply a thread to strike up a conversation. She's not the type of person to stir the pot and start drama. It's just an opinion and you don't have to agree with it. Plus, if you noticed Jes, many people disagreed and said how much they love the city. That goes to show that people have differing opinions. Again, jmho.

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
I can't say I hate it....because that's a really strong feeling. However I would NEVER live there, my Dad has an apartment on east 57th & lexington that I can use(he doesn't live there) anytime. I've stayed there about three times and while it was fun, I have NO desire to be there more. I'm a country bumpkin...no noise, no congestion, no buildings casting shadows on me. i feel exactly the same way about western nassau, I would never live there because it would make me unhappy. I'm sure lots of people that love the action of the city would hate living where i live.

OH ME ME ME. I hate everything about it. If I never had to go there again, I never would. The crowds, the trains, the congestion, the fast pace, I could go on and on.
And I took this post as a conversation starter and a way to find out who you have things in common with.
Just like that last thread, who hates the beach? Not to knock mother nature, lol...just we all have different opinions and that doesnt mean anyone is being insulted or put down.
Just a way to find others like you or unlike you...and to chat about what makes us who we are.

Re: Does anybody hate the city?
I hate it. I hated commuting. I hate it in the summer when it is so hot outside and all of the air conditioners drip on you. I hate tourists. I used to love it, and sometimes I still see the city I love, but I think I am so jaded. I have great memories in the city (we got engaged there for one) but I can't stand the attitude there anymore.
I used to love it until I commuted from the outer bourghs and it would take me two hours each way to get in and out.
I do like where my parents live (93rd and York) and I can see why they enjoy it and will go in to see them, but DH and I don't go in to hang out.
I am proud to be a New Yorker and will defend my city forever, and maybe I need a time out for a while, but right now I do hate it.
