Re: Does anyone else cringe when a word is HORRIBLY misspelled?
Misspellings really bother me.
I teach MBA classes, and I have a student this semester who is such an awful speller than I have to translate each sentence. I normally grade on content and not on spelling since it's a grad class, and I hope they have already covered all that, but it's to the point where I cannot give her what the content deserves because of the time and effort it takes to translate her messages and papers.

Re: Does anyone else cringe when a word is HORRIBLY misspelled?
"then" and "than" are two totally different words. no, they are not interchangeable. they mean two different things. they are used for different purposes. they don't even sound alike.
"their" vs "they're" vs "there" - don't even get me started....

Re: Does anyone else cringe when a word is HORRIBLY misspelled?
It bothers me a lot. I will be the first to say that my standards are abnormally high. My own family members are afraid to run things past me.
Every once in a while, I am asked asked to edit papers for friends who are in graduate programs as well as entrance essays to these programs. I am floored that their undergraduate work ever made it past a college professor. I know that sounds obnoxious, but I may be one of the few people I know that actually cares about this stuff. To some people it doesn't matter. To me it does.
When I do not know something, I look it up. If I have questions, I ask.

Re: Does anyone else cringe when a word is HORRIBLY misspelled?
That cracked me up..
Everyone has their little spelling errors.. especially when typing.. BUT.. I have a friend who does this BADDDLY.. when she e-mails me and says she was running "errands".. she writes "erins" UGHHHH!!!..
And when she writes something about her "laptop".. she writes "labtop"... I realized recently she actually says it like that on the phone also.. LoL
It sits.. on top of your lap.. it is a LAPTOP

Re: Does anyone else cringe when a word is HORRIBLY misspelled?
I find it rEdiculous sometimes that people can't spell simple words correctly. It's one thing if you type quickly and make a simple mistake that way - but there are people who ALWAYS make the same mistakes and that annoys me. But I'm an English teacher, so I'm paid to look for mistakes. I hate when people make things possessive when they're not supposed to be.

Re: Does anyone else cringe when a word is HORRIBLY misspelled?
Misspellings bother me but most of the time the only reason is because something about looking at the word spelled incorrectly just bugs me. It's a feng shui thing. Not everyone is a good speller and some are purely bad typists. Out and out butchering of a word is another thing.
ETA: I've learned that people don't like to be corrected so I generally don't bother. I did recently with my brother but only bc it's my brother and I know he'd want to know. Someone called me Miss Funk & Wagnalls once years ago so I generally bite my tongue. I never meant to sound like a know it all, I just happen to be a very good speller and thought people would want to know like I would if they were spelling a word or using it incorrectly. I probably do stuff that would make others cringe as well.

Yes. Although I'm guilty of mistyping words.
I'm the person that corrects my take-out menu at work, even though I'm the only one who see it.
OMG i do the same thing! and it drives me nuts when people misspell things on print advertisements! didnt you have a proofreader?
there's a little fast food chinese place on OCR in westbury that has on its sign the word "Kichen". didnt the sign people tell them "ummmm thats wrong". obviously not!

If I see a misspelled word on a page, it's ALL I can see. It disrupts my focus because I am hyper-aware of it and can't move on.

Wow, this is me too! And I thought I was the only crazy one
Even if I'm reading a novel and there's a work misspelled or with an "s" added on for no reason or something, drives me NUTS!

My BIL is just awful. An honest-to-God sample of his work. He sent us my nephew's Christmas lists:
New velcrow sneakers Used scates his size Giants outfet Royal coribian shairs Disney shairs
Maybe your nephew wrote it himself

While we're at it... It's "all intents and purposes" NOT "all intensive purposes"
And irregardless is not only NOT a proper word, if it were a word, it would mean the exact OPPOSITE of what you use it to mean.
(exhale) There, I feel better.

When you bedazzle something (I know some of you owned a Bedazzler back in the day! ) you're putting dazzle ON. So if you behead someone, wouldn't you be putting the head ON?
Maybe it's just me. I get confused at the grocery store because I can never remember if pitted olives are the ones with or without pits...

Re: Does anyone else cringe when a word is HORRIBLY misspelled?
I like when people add the "r" at the end of a word that shouldn't be there because it is pronounced that way, as in "I was in awr" instead of awe...
