Re: Does anyone else find this rude – regarding waiting in line to make a purchase?

I am on the fence- because I once was a Starbucks Store Manager, and there are TONS of people who find this VERY rude. There have been arguements in stores about it. Chat Icon But the PP who mentioned that being a cashier and then having to remember that they have to ring that paper up and which one (some stores carry 4 or more), is a pain at times.
I think that it does free up the line and such, but on the other hand it interupts the 'flow' of the line.
I will say that I have done this once or twice- ONLY when I had exact change.

For the paper, I don't think it's rude.

I agree.

Ditto. I do it all the time.

Eep! me too Chat Icon Its just easier to get out of peoples way. I don't shove my way up front tho. I just discreetly leave the money make some sort of eye contact if possible then leave.

To me it is standard operating procedure when buying the newspaper.

The fact that is has to be rung up annoys me. If it is a coffee cart, then just fine.

I agree with this.

I would not lose sleep over it, but yes, I would be like "what the heck"? in my head as I feel it is rude to go in front of someone in a line, your time is no more valuable than mine

True (about everyone's time) but they are not really going in front of you in the sense that they are not slowing you down, right? And you could do the same thing if all you had was the paper.

It kind of bothers me more when people interrupt the line to ask the cashier a question or for help. In my opinion they should wait on line for that too!

but I think the OP mentioned that the cashier stoped what she was doing, looked up at the "line cutter" Chat Icon and did have to ring up the paper so in that instance, yes, it was interrupting the line, KWIM?

This happens at the Post Office all of the time. People think that their needs don't require them to wait in line (getting a priority mail box, asking a "quick" question, etc.) and while I agree it's a PITA to wait in line for something like that, it takes time for the post office employee to answer them/work with them, slowing down the process for everyone that took the time to wait in line.

I have to change my opinon now. If the newspaper has to be scanned, they should wait in line.

I agree I do this every single day, I always make sure I have 2 quarters ready to go when I run into the newstand by the train. they know me in there anyway, I don't think I would do it if it was a one time only situation and they didn't know me b/c then perhaps they wouldn't know which paper I grabbed in case one is more expensive....

People do that all the time in train stations--it kind of annoys me, but it has become standard practice.

Re: Does anyone else find this rude – regarding waiting in line to make a purchase?

There are so many other things people do that I find SO MUCH MORE obnoxious and unacceptable...

Like people who actually do wait on line...then finally get up to the counter...wait until everything is rung up and the cashier says the total...and ONLY THEN do they decide to search for their wallet and try to find payment. All that time they were waiting there doing nothing and then all of a sudden it's like they are ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED that things cost money! So now everyone has to wait for the scavenger hunt through the pocketbook, therefore holding up the rest of the line.

Which is why, at that point, I go the counter, drop my 2 quarters down, take the paper, and leave! :)
