Does anyone else's child scream when you change them?

For the past month or so, my DS (he is 14 months old) refuses to let us change his diaper or clothes without crying and screaming bloody murder. He just wants to stand up and run away and it is a real struggle. I don't think it has anything to do with his being in pain while lying down, because he will lie down other times for other reasons without a problem. Is this normal, and if so, how long does it last?

DS is 9 months and sometimes (pretty often) he screams while being changed. I think it's normal. I wish I knew how long it lasted!

Re: Does anyone else's child scream when you change them?

My DD is 15 months and went through something like this for a couple of months. It has gotten much better but there are still times when she doesn't want to be changed and will cry. I've resorted to giving her things that she loves to distract her (ie, her binky which we only let her have for nap/sleep or her toothbrush which she loves to chew on). It has definitely gotten much better so have hope and hang in there!Chat Icon

ohhhhh yeah, I've been through this many times. It seemed to end for my DD by 22 mos or so..

My DS is doing it still; wks pass and he's great, then all of a sudden he's screaming again....the key is to DISTRACT ASAP with toys, songs, tv, a book, whatever.......then he'll forget what he's there for. i never tried to wrestle with him, he's too strong. once he was distracted, I could set about changing him.........

good luck! it's a phase and will pass.

My DS is 2 and he still does this sometimes.. (sorry I'm sure that's not the answer you were looking for).. now that he's getting older.. he kicks and freaks out ..not all the time.. but when it's in public he seriously makes it look like I'm abusing him or something.. I literally had this lady look at me and ask "What are you DOING to him?"... ughhh MORON.. I'm pinching him just to see how he'll react.. what do you think..??? he's 2!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

With that said.. I agree with the distraction method.. I give him my cell phone.. keys.. whatever when we are out..

At home.. I try to make sure the TV is on and he's interested before I begin changing.. if he freaks.. I give him a toy or the remote

Taylor still does it, she is almost 11 months. I always try to have something to distract her while she is being changed.
Its on and off though, sometimes she doesn't mind
