Does anyone have Child Health Plus?
I am not going back to work in september and right now Emily is on my health insurance through work.
DH had the insurance lady at his job today but it would be about $700/month to put Em and I on his insurance. Right now his boss covers his because it isn't much.
So Emily and I are probably going to need to go on Child Health Plus. THe insurance woman that visited his job today said we'll be eligible because of his salary, and that it can be both me and her because I'll be her caregiver.
I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. The only people I know who've been on it are my students at work.

Re: Does anyone have Child Health Plus?
You would not be on Child Health Plus since it's only for children. You could apply for Family Health Plus, but they do count your husband's income and their income limits are pretty low for the Family Health Plus. The info is on their site for that. It works differently than Child Health Plus in that CHP has no income limits. If you are over the income amount to qualify for subsidized premiums, you just pay the entire premium for your child which is still only around $150 or so. I have CHP for both of my children. One is through Empire Blue Cross and the other through United. There are no co-pays for visits and prescripts and it covers dental and vision. It's great insurance, even if you have to pay the full premium.

Re: Does anyone have Child Health Plus?
You can use Healthy NY I've done it as parent & child. You can choose your insurance carrier (they have 8 different carriers) that way you could possibly get one that all your doctors take.
Hope this helps!

Re: Does anyone have Child Health Plus?
We have had CHP for DD since she was born. We pay the highest premium - I think its about $178 per month but she is covered for everything so I think its the best one we could find for here. DH is self employed and I just get an allowance for my health care as I am the only employee so this was was definitely our best option and I love it.

I believe you can only apply for that if you are employed and your employer doesn't provide health insurance.

The State pays the premium to the health care plan, unless you are are required to pay the full premium (which is then a discounted group rate).

No it's not like Medicaid, they are two separate programs. Child Health Plus has several health plans that participate and your child is on a regular health plan just like if you had employer based coverage. United Health Care, Empire Blue Cross, Vytra, Oxford, etc. are all participants in the plan. I believe Medicaid is a bit different and the income qualifications are very low for that program and the entire thing is funded by the state, not just subsidized.
ETA: EVERYONE qualifies for CHP, not everyone qualifies for Medicaid.

It shouldn't take 2 months. If you submit the paperwork to them prior to the 20th of the month, if you qualify, coverage is effective the 1st of the following month. If you go through a facilitated enroller (i.e. social services, etc.)I think that prolongs it though. I have always went directly through the health insurance plan.

actually thats how long it takes now if you file your application for health plus for the first time... they send it first to medicaid and if medicaid approves it then yo can choose health plus as your insurance... I think what you are thinking about are the insurances through healthy ny, cause thats exactly how it worked when we filed our application to empire bcbs...

Nope, talking about CHP, I've done it with both of my kids. CHP and Medicaid are two different things. If you qualify for Medicaid, it gets sent to Medicaid. If you qualify for CHP it stays with the CHP plan that you picked when you signed up. If you are enrolling through DSS and NOT the health plan directly (as listed on the CHP site), I think that may prolong it.

Here is a link to applying directly through the plan by sending your application in the mail. Note, this is only for Children, not family health plus, etc.

When DD was born last year, a woman came to my house which I *thought* would be easier since I had just given birth a few days prior, but it wasn't. She treated me like I was an idiot, very condescending and tried to play down my income to make me qualify for Medicaid (which I didn't want). I can't remember what specifically happened, but something with her not giving them proof of my address and me getting a letter 2 months later and I got into it with them on the phone and told them to cancel the policy. I then just re-applied through Empire on my own, which was a piece of cake like it was with DS.
