I actually cried when he got re-elected, because I COULD NOT BELIEVE people would be stupid enough to reelect such an irresponsible, selfish human being to run our country.

in your opinion that is...

I voted for him, and I don't think I'm stupid

but you are entitled

Nah, you don't strike me as stupid at all!

Can we chalk it up to a terrible lapse in judgment and common sense? That might make us both feel better. Chat Icon

PLUS, immediately after 9/11 I think we were ALL happy with Bush and how he dealt with things (I mean the cowboy emotion mirrored all of our own for a bit)

n.

I agree with most of what you said, but not everyone was happy with Bush. I was a college sophomore in days after 9/11 and I remember taping quotes from hair and "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind" on my bag. I saw which way the wind was blowing. The rash of "patriotism" actually made me sick, but because I saw it as "us vs. them" and it's not that simple. I remember saying "oh great, now people are going to use this as an excuse to hate muslims and Bush is going to start a war in the Middle East" I remember thinking how much better off we'd have been with Al Gore as President.

Many Americans did NOT have the cowboy mentality

This is what it comes down to. Lets face it most of us on this website are middle to middle to upper class.

And while you can bash what Bush has done in the war, Bush signed some of the largest tax cuts in the country's history.

With a liberal democrat in office, I can pretty much guarantee we will be paying more taxes. You can kiss things like property tax rebates, and economic stimulus payments goodbye.

In fact while losing these types of tax cuts, we will most likely be paying MORE taxes in the end.

No thanks.

Bush sucks. But the alternative Democrat would suck even more.

Anyone remember Jimmy Carter? That's what John Kerry would have resembled.

With respect to Bush's responsibility for the sub-prime crisis - I can assure you all this was happening and in place long before Bush was ever in office. Regardless of any articles you can dig up I have been on the frontlines of the mortgage-backed securities market for many years - actually working on the deals and on the regulations and I have watched regulations and predatory lending laws increase significantly in the last 5 years or so - I know this because I have been knee deep in this on a high level - not as a broker or a banker who deal with it on a small time level. I have actually sat there and put the new regulations into agreements so I know they exist.

It happened for many reasons and there were many players involved but everyone saw this coming for a long time.

While I may not necessarily agree with Bush I support him, at the time, to me, he was the lesser of 2 evils.

Re: Does anyone here still support Bush?

While I dont support the war. My brother fought in both Desert Storm and this war and people are happy we are there. The troops have much more loyalty and dedication to our country than us civilians I'll tell you that and most of them whether or not agree with the war, support our country and our president.

Bush dealt with 9/11, when everyone gets their tax stimulus checks I doubt anyone will be complaining. Also we have not been attacked in 8 years-- and 9/11 could have been prevented by the previous administration whether you want to believe it or not the 9/11 commission wanted to include this in their reports but where not allowed to do so. The financial times of today are called economic correction and Bush cannot be faulted for sub prime issues he did not tell people to take a mortgage out more than you could afford. If the previous administration had been focused on foreign policy instead of their intern our current situation perhaps would not be as severe.

Agreed and great post overall.

This was Slick Willy's biggest fault IMO and is very overlooked by the average citizen.

I didn't vote for him either time. I didn't support him in 2000 and I don't support him now. I do not like things he has done with the country, especially the war.
However, I think the comparison to Hitler is ludicrous.

Re: Does anyone here still support Bush?

Unfortunately, the other options weren't any better. I certainly wouldn't want "Billary" or Obama.

Sorry - but I agree with the previous poster that said that 9/11 could have been prevented by the previous administration, but Bill was too busy with Monica to care... why would I want his wife who was dumb enough to forgive the lying jackarse? I don't feel Obama has a clue about the reality of things... you can't just sit down and have a little tea party with other nations leaders who want to kill Americans. They raise their children to hate us and our decisions now will impact what our children will have to contend with. As a mom to be I wish we could all "just get along" and sit around a camp fire singing in harmony - but reality is my kids may be the future troops protecting and defending America as my grandfathers did - proudly I might add.

I also agree with the poster that wrote about the economic hardships of our time and how taking on mortgages that people couldn't afford wasn't the president's fault. People today have such little self ownership and look to blame everyone but themselves - while they drive around in their gas guzzling SUV's of course - or high end/high priced cars. Just like health care - I laugh at how people want everyone else to pay for the cost of care - and complain about paying doctors and for drugs, but the Beamer and the Benz are parked in the 2 car garage. I like a nice car myself and I have a mortgage, but I don't take on bills I can't pay nor do I complain about a drug co-pay! Sorry for the rant, I just deal with this nonsense being in the healthcare profession. Lets go for the generic drugs Billary - we will see more and more of what happened recently with Heparin... people dying due to cheaply made contaminanted drugs - IN CHINA! But hey it was only $15 for a 30 day supply! Isn't that more important?

I'm not his biggest fan, but I don't blame him for everything that people perceive as wrong with America. We do still have checks & balances in this country, he's really not that powerful to be able to impact everything.

I also don't think that if Gore had been President he would have done all this good for the country. He had a lot of time on his hands to put together his little power point presentation. He would not have had the support in Congress to get a lot of his ideas passed through. So I think that he actually has had MORE influence over people not being the president.

And I question if a Democratic president will REALLY pull out of Iraq as quickly as they are professing right now, or will it become the usual backpeddling and "new information" will come to light.

Very well said! Chat Icon

I am not a fan of GW, I didn't vote for him either time... The war in Iraq has been a HUGE disaster and in his quest to end terrorism, I believe he has actually put us at greater risk.

HOWEVER, Obama and Hillary scare the crap out of me and neither one of them are getting my vote...

January 20, 2009 will be a scary day, IMO, regardless of who is voted in.

This is exactly how I feel! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am not a fan of GW by a long shot and I don't think it's fair to say we would have been better off with a different president b/c in all fairness, we DON'T know what Gore or Edwards would have done.

Is it easy to blame the current president for the current state of affairs? Absolutely! But do I feel he did this single handedly? No.

As for the current candidates running for president, I'm not sold on ANY of them.

I just hope whomever I wind up voting for does SOMETHING to get this country back on it's feet.

I do. He is my president and I don't blame him for everything that is wrong right now in this country.

As for November, I don't know who i am going to vote for. Hillary to me is the same old thing and I don't want that anymore.

Also, John McCaine is just going to be too old for my liking.

I like Obama and his ideas, but I am real nervous about his age, but this country might need a young president with different vision then what we have had the past few years.

ITA!! Well said, Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I wanted to add, maybe if there was tort reform and people couldn't sue over a stubbed toe, maybe healthcare would be more affordable. Goes back to accountability, most people in this country blame everyone for their problems and are looking to get something for nothing. Prime example, the sub prime mortgage crisis. I am sorry if you can add 2 +2 then you should be able to realize that if you only make 40K a year you can't afford a 300K house, an SUV and a 52inch LCD TV in your house.

I totally agree. Although I shudder at the gas prices perhaps if every other household didn't drive a 500 ton SUV the demand wouldn't be so high and the price would go down. If you look at Europe....SUVs are a rarity not the norm like they are here. Europeans have smaller appliances houses etc and they live just fine....as a matter of fact they laugh at what our dollar is worth. Americans now at days are very wasteful and have a want it now get it at any cost attitude...that's what has our country in this subprime bind. I'm not a fan of Bush....I think he has other issues....but I don't think he's to blame for this entire subprime mess or every other mess we have gotten into. We want to sue for every little thing then we byatch about insurance premiums. We want lower gas prices but we have 5000 sq foot mansions with electricity running 24/7, heat on full blast, 3 SUVs in the driveway getting 5 mpg and so on. We use plastic like crazy....50 poland spring bottles per person a day etc...what do you think is used to make plastics. I really hope America wakes up and does its part. Stop wasting be more frugal....if you make $50K a year don't look at a $45K SUV and a $500K house....live within your means...OK rant overChat Icon

you go girl! that was awesome!!! well said!!!

the waste in this country disgusts me... "but i have to have an SUV... it's 80 degrees out, i have to have the AC on all day long... i have to drink ONLY bottled water, I have to have the newest outfit, the newest bag, etc. etc." It really is getting out of hand.

It is OUR waste that drives up the cost of everything... people need to stop blaming everyone else and look at their own lives. it's not just the government that controls prices.

I agree with this as well./

Too many live in a bubble.

They dont realize that the US is not the "best country in the world" anymore..

People LAUGH at us for how we are destryoing ourselves.

They refuse to import from us...and yet we wonder why?

I would love to have pride for my country and people but its going down fast,

yes, that is true.... but many of the choices that most American consumers make enable the government to make money off of us. it's a two-way street.

The government is not making people buy SUV's that don't need them (in my opinion, unless you work in construction or have 4 kids, you DON"T need one!). the government is not making people only drink bottled water or buy the IPOD phone because it's "cool" etc. etc.
