Does anyone know anything about cameras lenses or lights?
Hi! I'm trying to get a head start on a Father's Day present. I want to buy DH a camera lens or lights but I have absolutely zero knowledge about cameras. We have a Nikon D90 and mostly use it to take pictures of DD and our dog (both in and out doors). Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!
ETA: We currently have the 18-105mm lens.

I am not very camera saavy, but I recently got a 50mm 1.8 lens for my Canon and it's AWESOME. It takes really great photos. They sell a relatively inexpensive one on Amazon for the Nikon also ($120 or so).

I agree, I also have a D90 and LOVE my 50mm 1.8 lens. It is a portrait lens, no zoom, but takes amazing pics As far as lights, I researched a lot before buying mine and I bought the SB-600(speedlight)

Does he zoom a lot?
For lighting: you can get the speedlight 600. It's a great flash!

Thanks! If I already have the 18-105mm lens, is the 50mm still useful for him? I'm so lost!!

If you want crisp portrait type photos with the backgrounds really blurred, it would be useful for him.

Re: Does anyone know anything about cameras lenses or lights?
Was your 18-105 the lens that came with the camera? If so, they typically have the cheapest glass. Also it's a zoom lens and the 50mm is a prime which means it's a fixed focal length and you "zoom" with your feet. Primes typically give you better quality and often work better and fater than zoom especially if they have a fixed aperture and not a range. The aperture is the f/# so if your 18-105 is f/3.5-5.6 it's a range and probably doesn't work well in low light situations.
If he plans on being the "shooter" for birthday parties and stuff you might want to get him a speedlight because the on camera flash is awful on any camera and the speedlight will allow him to bounce the flash off the ceiling or a wall and you won't get that red eye or washed out look in your pictures.
FM me if you have any other questions

haha, this was me reading your post:
I think I get it now - I'm aiming to get the 50mm and the sb-700 light, I think that'll round out his accessories for the camera. Please let me know if you think there's a better combination. Thanks!

Re: Does anyone know anything about cameras lenses or lights?
I don't shoot Nikon, but I almost always have a 50mm on my camera though.
It's a great all around lens. If you want something a little wider you can go for a 35mm, but again I don't shoot Nikon so regarding cost I'm clueless.
The same thing goes with the flash, for now if he's not shooting for money anything than any flash would be better than the on camera IMO.

One more thought, you could visit a site like borrowlenses.com and get him a gift certificate so he can try out a few to see which one he likes
