Re: dog bones

we have a pit and she chews on raw hide. When the pieces get too small we throw them out because she will try to swallow them

Same here. And that happens relatively quickly.

That is how it's supposed to be... to a point. The little spiky bits are supposed to be good for cleaning their teeth, but once the pieces start breaking off, then you have to take it away and replace it. I don't even bother getting these for our pit anymore, she goes through them like nothing.

ETA: You mean those really hard ones, not the rubber-y kind like the one above right? Like this...

Re: dog bones

The one I posted is very hard, like the regular ones. It does get chewed up but no pieces have come off, yet LOL.

Trust me, not as hard as the other one. It's like a rock. lol. The one you posted has a hard, rubbery feel, so it shouldn't really get the spiky things like the one I posted does.

Oh it is very spikey/rough, once chewed. Hurts like hell if it scratches you Chat Icon

Re: dog bones

I give my dog nylabones for powerful chewers. I never give him rawhide at the recommendation of my vet. If swallowed the rawhide can damage the dog's GI tract.

Re: dog bones

We went through quite a bit of different products before we settled on this:

Those are real Elk antlers. They are obtained humanely, no animals are killed for the product.

We don't do rawhide because it's processed and a choking hazard with my two who try to swallow the ends whole.

We don't do Nylabones because they form sharp edges and Brinkley's gums in particular would bleed a lot from them.

We don't do hollow bones because they were breaking sharp pieces off the ends and swallowing them.

So when we found antlers online at our pet food store, they were a great idea but small and pricey. I looked online and found good reviews for this seller, even though their website looks like a 5 year old designed it:

http://www.elkusa.com/antler-chew.html

We took a chance and ordered from them. No issues with the card, delivery, etc. and it's taken 2 Labs about 8 months to get it from the size you see above to what it is now, which is *almost* a choking hazard. They chew on it every day.

Each one of the big bones is almost $20 but WELL worth it in my opinion for a constant chew toy that doesn't smell, and is safe. Chat Icon

This is what I give Yogi. I got mine at Total PetCare in Holbrook on Broadway Avenue. Very expensive, but he hasn't even put a dent in it! He chews it everyday.

Not the big ones I posted, but there are smaller ones. I didn't realize you had a small dog - you could probably get them at a pet food store. Where do you live? My food store in Setauket sells them. Feasts for Beasts.
