dogs and kids question...
there was an incident at the soccer field today with DD and thankfully she did not get hurt, BUT it raised a question for me that i don't know how to answer because i'm not a dog person and never owned one...
DD was running off the field for a water break. a dog broke loose from an owner and grabbed/nibbled DD's arm. he did not bite, i guess it was playful
question is...what do i tell my DD to do in that type of situation? does she stop running? does she try to break free? how is one to act when "attacked" by a dog? this was a close call and boy would i have been pizzed if the outcome had been different...
oh, and DD is 3 years old...

why the the dog broke free from the owner, it was an accident. thank GOD the dog didn't attack your DD. I would just tell her not to run towards a dog regardless of the size or how cute it is, you never know. most little dogs are nastier than the bigger dogs. (i guess it's the napoleon complex they have)
it's hard to tell what to tell your DD to do though. depending on the dog, i would walk away as quickly as possible.

i always tell her not to approach dogs and ask the owner if she is allowed to pet/not pet, but this dog came at her while she was minding her own business so it kind of scared her.
i can't control what other people do, but i want to arm my daughter with how to defend herself, KWIM?

understandable, i thought were that the dog got loose haha. id tell her to walk quickly, not run, if she runs, the dog might think shes playing.

If it were me I'd probably tell her what I would do if I was being attacked. And that would be to not fight it , get into a fetal position and protect your face. But at 3 yrs old...I don't know how much of that she would understand. KWIM?
Glad she wasn't hurt today

Re: dogs and kids question...
The rule for being chased by a dog is to stop running and either walk or come to a complete stop. Generally, the dog is chasing because it either wants to play or is attacking. Either way, to stop running usually throws the dog off and it will stop chasing you. I would just explain that if she sees a dog chasing her (I wouldn't phrase it as attacking just so I didn't make her frightened unnecessarily), she should stop and stand very still. Glad that today was just a minor incident and noone got hurt.

Re: dogs and kids question...
i know my two dogs find that if you run, quickly move, or raise your arms you are playing... if you ever watch any dog training shows they always say just turn around and cross your arms... it has worked withboth my dogs and my parents puppy
