Dr. Appt Today and Question about OTC Pre-Natals
6 week 6 day appt - saw the little one on the ultrasound - looks like a circus peanut!! Saw the little heart beating away!
I told doc that I could not stomach the pre-natal drink and asked for a pill. She wrote me a script for Prenate + DHA - I called up pharmacy to see how much - $67
Are the OTC pre-natals the same? I was looking the other day in the store and they make so many with separate DHA pills. I'm thinking I might do that - I cannot do $67 a month!
She told me if I couldn't stomach the pill to do 2 Flintstones chewables a day.
What do you think - are the OTC ok?
Thanks!

Re: Dr. Appt Today and Question about OTC Pre-Natals
My doctor said the OTC were fine. I take the Target brand ones. I believe it was under $10 for 100. He never mentioned anything about DHA. so I haven't been taking that.

I'm looking at the prescription and I'm pretty sure it's for a one month supply because is says the number 30 and she put down 6 refills.

I do OTC, I did through my last pregnancy too and my doctors said they are the same thing. I pay $20 for a 3 month supply of the CVS brand.
Also, I found they are easier to take if you do it before bed.

Those are the ones I take too! My midwives office is fine that I take them.

Re: Dr. Appt Today and Question about OTC Pre-Natals
I used to take OTC prenatals but my prescription plan covers my Rx ones now so it is less money. In addition, I take Expecta DHA vitamins. I can only find them at CVS, though I believe Walmart carries them as well. They are about $14 for 30 pills. Here they are:

Re: Dr. Appt Today and Question about OTC Pre-Natals
my dr didn't think the otc ones had enough folic acid in them, and wrote a prescription for folic acid to take with them.
Also, you might want to ask your dr to write you a script for Renate plus DHA - it is generic and I only paid $10 for them, when the brand names were $30-90. I've been take Renate DHA with no stomach problems at all, when I had problems with others.

Re: Dr. Appt Today and Question about OTC Pre-Natals
The Prenate DHA is a good pre-natal... no fishy aftertaste... plus when you fill your Rx it's $67 for a three month supply.
But, to answer your question, I don't think there's an issue with OTC pre-natals... my friend used them with both of her pregnancies and her kids are fine.
