Re: drinking from a straw
a juice box worked for #1, squirt a little in their mouth and they will start sucking that pure juice!
#2 picked it up early (9 months) by stealing #1's straw cups

Re: drinking from a straw
juice box didn't work for us, maybe I wasn't consistent or didn't have patience to teach it.
DS learned on the first day with the playtext lil gripper straw cup, it has like a "button" where you can press and have liquid go up the straw to show them how it works.

Re: drinking from a straw
I always drink from a straw so I think he just picked up from taking sips of my water.
We also used the Munchkin sippy cups for a loooong time.

Re: drinking from a straw
This is how a friend suggested teaching DS and it worked for me and another friend as well:
Put a straw in a glass of water. Put your index finger over the top of the straw, trapping some water inside. Lift straw out of the water and make sure there's some water inside the straw. Put the end of the straw with the water dripping out of it into your baby's mouth. When you see DC looking like he is sucking, take your finger off the top and let the water go into DC's mouth. He'll start drinking it instinctively. Try doing this a few times until he knows to suck on the straw to get the water out when you hold it in his mouth.
