DS whacked his head hard - how do I know if he hurt himself bad and should I call ped?
DS is a maniac on the changing table. Somehow he managed to whip himself backwards and banged the back of his head on the end of the wood changing table - HARD - I heard the sound of it hitting and it was LOUD. He started screaming but, as soon as i picked him up and tried to distract him he stopped and was laughing and acting normal. I don't see any red marks so I can't tell where he hit it and I don't think there is any bump.
For BTDT moms - how would I know if something was wrong? Should I call the ped? I feel so terrible - I'm not sure how I let this happen to him! I hope he isn't seriously hurt!

If he has a bump outwards its a good sign. If he is sleepy its a bad sign. If he is acting normal, I personally wouldn't worry about it...but I live in laid-backsville. You might not.

Hey listen, small kids bounce really well! This is going to happen on ocassion and the kid will be fine! Most bruises go away in a few days...just give him lots of cuddles!

I think it always sounds worse to us then it really is.
If he's acting normal now - I wouldn't worry.

Coming from a mom whose DD fell down a flight of hardwood stairs face first, down the cement steps on the side of our house TWICE and having survived both without a bruise, I am sure he is ok

Tyler is the king of hitting his head...falling off the bed onto hardwood floors and falling on my tile floors and than falling with DH and having to go to the hospital. Trust me, you will know when there is something seriously wrong. He wil be lethargic, dilated pupils, maybe going in and out of consciousness or will continue screaming and cannot be calmed down.

Oh I have BTDT as my ped would say since I have called several times
Signs to look for: did they vomit after hitting their head? did they lose conciousnes? are their pupils the same?
Signs that are good: did they cry right away? are they acting like themself?
Also it's ok if they go to sleep after hitting their head as long as it's around the same time they should be napping or sleeping. Just keep an eye on them.
hope your ds is feeling better

As my doctor says, "Their heads are hard for a reason." As long as the baby cries afterwards, you're pretty much in good shape.

Jeremy fell backwards off Dereks lap in Emmas school the other day. You know how hard school floors are. I called the ped. His words were "as long as he hasn't lost conciousness, isn't acting confused, not vomiting he is fine" He probably has a little headache
