EBF Moms to Newborns: Public Feedings?
Has anyone attempted this yet? I have the Bebe Au Lait and have used it successfully once and unsuccessfully twice. My anxiety is very high out in public, not because of the social 'taboos' of boobies in public, but because I can't effectively position DS. We're working on it. But I wanted to see what other Moms are experiencing. Also, is there a BFing support group in Suffolk that you know of? TIA

Re: EBF Moms to Newborns: Public Feedings?
I BF in public all the time - I was very comfortable with it and DD didn't have any issues latching, etc. I never used a cover - I used mostly a cloth diaper or wore clothing that kept me covered...I found the covers to be a bit cumbersome.
That said, I was anxious about it early on - and DD definitely sensed that making the feedings all the more frustrating.
I would nurse DS at home the way you would out in public - sort of practice - until you are feeling more comfortable. Even in front of a mirror so you can see what the issues might be with his latching/positioning, etc.
I know of a group in Huntington...not sure where you are. Maybe check with your OB?

Why don't you try to practice at home? That might be a start as to getting your position down with the Bebe Au Lait...getting comfy putting it on and positioning you LO.
For me...i'm a public nurser. I was hesistant at 1st with DD#1, but in reality...no one's going to be staring long enough. And if they catch a glimpse of the Ta-Tas...OH WELL! You're feeding your child....they can get over it.
With DD#2...I'm obviously at another comfort level....yes, that was me nursing her in the middle of the cafeteria at the aquarium yesterday
YOU have to be comfortable #1..otherwise you won't have a successful nursing session. After a few times, it gets much easier.
But it is for some and not for others, it's all about your own personal comfort level

I BF in public all the time. I don't really get any problem, I just latch her and that she doesn't pop off to look around

There is a BF group that meets at the Dolan health center in Huntington (off of Pulaski) on Wednesdays. You can contact Ethel the LC at Huntington Hospital for more info.
I myself have issues with feeding DS in public. I have a Hooterhider cover and he hates having anything over his head or face so he constantly picks it up making it not too effective. He also comes off the boob often, because me let down is too strong for him sometimes. It easier for me to just feed him in a bathroom somewhere... I have fed him in a stall a bunch of times

It easier for me to just feed him in a bathroom somewhere... I have fed him in a stall a bunch of times I have done this twice. Not only do I feel so gross sitting on the bowl in my jeans...I feel extremely guilty feeding my son in a public bathroom. Its unsanitary at best. Yesterday DS kept unlatching each time someone in the next stall would flush!!!! Kind of funny, but mostly sad. I must get over this and learn how to hold him properly. Thanks for the support group idea. I wish they had one out of stonybrook. Do you know what time the Wednesday group meets? My cousin joined the Huntington one years ago and met most of her closest friends there.

I was thinking of going when I met Ethel in the hospital(she had said it was 7:30pm), then I forgot about the group. Last week I was at the ped and met another mommy that goes to the group and she said it's at 1:30pm on Wednesdays.
It's definitely not ideal to feed him in a stall, sometimes there just isn't any other option.

I do it. sometimes I'll cover him with a receiving blanket, other times I just strategically place his head and whatever I am wearing.
I honestly don't care if someone sees my boob but my dh does and I respect that.

Re: EBF Moms to Newborns: Public Feedings?
I was clumsy at first but once I practiced it got easier. Try using the cover at home until you feel more comfortable. Now that DS is 6 months I'm having trouble again, he either does not like being under the cover or he wants to play with it. Sometimes I go to my car to feed him. I'd rather do that then feed him in the bathroom.

Re: EBF Moms to Newborns: Public Feedings?
I started BFing in public when DS was 7 or 8 weeks old. Before that, I didn't really take him out. It took several times before I felt comfortable with it. It definitely takes practice. Also, take advantage of places that have mother's lounges and more private areas to nurse until you feel comfortable.

Re: EBF Moms to Newborns: Public Feedings?
I have no problems BFing in public. But when I'm with someone who I know it makes uncomfortable, I try to make sure nothing's showing! Problem is DS doesn't like anything covering his head and will always yank the burp cloth off! I agree with the others that you should practice at home. I find that whenever I'm out, I use my right side because that's my stronger arm.
Good luck!

Re: EBF Moms to Newborns: Public Feedings?
I did it all the time - in restaurants, in the middle of the mall, etc. I had the same cover as you and it worked great.
ETA: I know there is a BFing support group at St. Catherine's in Smithtown. I believe they meet on Monday nights. FM CJMommy, she used to go all the time to that group.
