Anyone else find it weird that Duncans family so far is fine? Leads me to believe the disease becomes a lot more transmittable after the patient is really sick almost dying. Maybe it's not as contagious during the first few days of symptoms?
That's what they're saying. It becomes most contagious at the end of life bc it's transmitted through bodily fluids and more bodily fluids are secreted towards the end. Vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding.
Which would explain why even though he was showing some symptoms when he went to the ER the FIRST time, none of the staff from that visit got sick with it.
Bingo! This is what I believe.
And why I think that the nurse who flew didn't infect others either.

I love Shep and he's usually an excellent voice of reason! He's 100% right for the present and immediate future.
I think people are concerned with what happens if more and more cases start popping up.

I don't know who this man is but I love him.
the media and politics is 100% making this worse.
should it be taken seriously that two people on US soil got Ebola yes. but I don't believe everyone should be panicking. I sit here and say I am not panicking and I am going to live my life. but in reality sometimes I freak my self out about Ebola and a million things other things in life. I just remember in the end it is what it is and I cant control everything!

hopefully not Ebola, considering that person would've been extremely sick and not even able to board the plane w/ end stage Ebola!

Re: Ebola and the news
he is the medical supervisor guiding everyone on too the plane.
the infected person is in a hazmat suit and everyone touching her is.
this guy is just guiding them on the plane cause its not easy to see out of them. I think he is perfectly safe.
this is a perfect example of the media fueling into peoples fear and paranoia

The fact that there may be more cases in Dallas does not scare me or surprise me. Those two nurses were not the only ones seeing him. So, I would say this. The only ones infected are those who were with him during his most contagious state.
NO one in the ER both times has come back infected. None of the family he was visiting
Just the medical care workers and yes, that does make sense. If one got infected, more probably will.
I heard this morning Frontier gave all of that plane's staff a paid 21 days off for isolation. Wanna bet they won't stay home.
It is only infectious when the symptoms are showing.
I so want this over already. I understand the panic but I don't buy into it.
Some guy was a teacher was on the plane AFTER that nurse and he's school is shut down and he's staying home for 21 days.
Dr. Gupta himself says banning flights won't stop it
Its only contagious when you are showing signs. Duncan was asymptomatic.. showing NO signs until he was finally admitted. No one else got sick while he wasn't.
My sources:
Frontier Airlines
Dr. Gupta on banning flights
Teacher in Ohio
Ummm.. He was showing symptoms the first time he was turned away at the hospital.
And the second nurse was showing symptoms when she flew.

I would seriously doubt someone dying of Ebola would be able to even board a plane without serious assistance.
Its a progressing disease. Not just a quick death.
People arrive DOA often

How sad! But if they died from Ebola while on the plane, they would have to be SO severely ill, and do you think the airline would let them on? Hmm

Probably a heart attack. Happens often on airplanes. Ebola takes a few days to kill..not a few hours

there's that but seriously they die in their hospital bed unable to move. Writhing in pain and misery as they internal organs shut down. Not something you can just wait in line to go through customs, security and board a commercial flight with.
You have to wait for boarding too. A person in that advanced stage of Ebola would have set off a thousand alarms before ever boarding a flight even if it wasn't Ebola! This is a journalist looking for a few quick ratings.
ETA: My prediction BEFORE the cause of death is determined there will be a chain of events outline that puts this person semi-direct contact with a person who may or may not have also been exposed to or is from an Ebola country.
(nevermind, the plane was from Liberia! all Liberians are carriers! RUN for the hills - sarcasm sorry, I know no one is saying that ) This isn't even a story on the news because its NOT A STORY AT ALL!

It can't be from Ebola... if he was at the point of death he wouldn't have been able to walk on that plane! (from what it sounds like) and there is no way he would have been allowed on if he could even have possibly had the strength to get to the airport.

Re: Ebola and the news
I have listened to claims that banning flights won't help, because they will travel by land, be harder to trace, but I do believe trying to contain it as much as possible (and nothing is fool proof), while supplying them with supplies and resources to fight it, would limit the number of cases here. There would also be less panic and problems that would occur (effects on our economy) because of hysteria.
We do absolutely need to help those countries, but what good are we to them if we and most importantly, our healthcare workers, get sick?
I do believe that the affected countries need help from the rest of the world and we are planning on sending a few thousand of our troops.
I'm also wondering if the people in West Africa, who are now immune are being trained in some way to help out.

The problem is that until it started affecting NON-African peoples, no one cared, essentially... except for those who VOLUNTEERED to go over and care for the sick. These are incredibly impoverished nations who don't have the means or ability to do what needs to be done, and until VERY recently, there was almost NO aid being sent there... there is still, IMO, very little aid being sent there.

This is a good point. Totally not the same thing, but I remember with Sandy seeing commercials to text to donate. Same with that huge tsunami (sorry, I forget where exactly that was). I haven't seen jack shit asking for donations to help with the Ebola crisis. Why exactly, I have no idea. It is pretty screwed up though!

Exactly, not for nothing, but according to most estimates, between 4000 and 6000 Africans die EACH DAY from AIDS.

Ebola and the news
I worry only about the fact that it appears that hospital workers are not being given clear and consistent directions in terms of protocol. At least, this seemed to be the case in Dallas.
My husband is a funeral director. He takes his PPE seriously. He wears a gown, scrubs, boot covers, gloves.... face shield and a respirator. Look, those paper gowns? They can and do fail when exposed to bodily fluids. Happened to my husband Tuesday night. Blood soaked right through his gown onto his shirt.
More often than not he is getting blood splatter on his clothing, many times on his wrist or neck area, where there is no covering.
I worry about him in that regard, especially since people are still infectious after death. I worry about our nurses, doctors, and other healthcare providers for that same reason. Telling a nurse that she is ok to be dealing with a highly infectious person's bodily fluids while having so many areas of their skin unprotected is scary. I have concerns that we are telling our healthcare providers they are safe but that it doesn't appear they are being given right PPE to safely equip themselves or that they are being giving consistent information to help them protect themselves.
So, am I panicking? No. Am I concerned? Yes.

He lost me from go:
Ebola is a very scary disease with horrifying symptoms, but it poses very little risk to the US.
I do not agree it poses very little risk. Tell that to the 123 people on a plane with an infected person showing symptoms. Someone who on Thursday is critically ill. She flew Monday, 2 days ago.
