Effectiveness of Epidural

As soon as it was put in the pain went completely away within seconds. I had it put in at 3 cent dialated. I took a nap after that and woke up at 9.5 cent and almost ready to push

It was miraculous! I will be getting it again this time.

Effectiveness of Epidural

I had instant pain relief and remained that way well until after I was stitched up. It was truly heaven.

Effectiveness of Epidural

I had instant relief. When it was time to push they turned the epi drip off So I could feel when to push and if I was pushing correctly. It wore off slowly but by time she was coming out I did feel some vaginal pain.

Re: Effectiveness of Epidural

My first son I felt absolutely nothing other then a little pressure when I had contraction and was ready to push. This only happened when I was fully dilated. I actually asked my husband if he was out.

Second time my labor was going really fast. I got the epidural and it only numbed one side. They gave me a button to push for more drugs, but I never got the chance to push it. My contractions weren't as bad but when I got to 10cm I felt everything. The crowning and tearing was awful. I was screaming. Thankfully I only pushed for about 20 minutes. After I had my son I remember thinking oh that is what those ladies I see on baby story and such screaming are feeling. First time around I couldn't understand it. Right after I told my husband no more kids for me.
How funny how we forget. Baby #3 due in June.

Re: Effectiveness of Epidural

The epi helped relieve the labor pains but felt pain with all my deliveries. With ds#1 dr turned it off for delivery - which was a shock to me and I felt pain.
Baby #2 epi didn't take the first time - and redid but felt a little pain at delivery but he was out in 3 quick pushes.
Baby #3 labor was quick and intense and felt relief with the epi but dr. and assistant were not ready to deliver baby so I had to hold on and that was painful.
Most of my friends say they felt nothing with the epi. Good Luck

Epi was awesome for me. But don't be fooled about "pressure " either. I was able to sleep until I was ready to push, but my "pressure" was like on my rectum. Insane amount of pressure there while pushing! In a way kinda painful. A little hard to describe. But pressure can be intense. I'd still take it any day over full contractions though. Even through all that, I was telling everyone five mins after I gave birth and to this day that I had a great experience.

Effectiveness of Epidural

Both times it was instantaneous relief when I got it. Also both times the medication started wearing off and I started feeling the contractions again. The doc came in and they increased the meds each time. I didn't feel anything with either delivery just pressure. I don't know why you need to feel the contractions at the end - I couldn't but they can see on the monitor when you're having them and they told me when to push. Both times two pushes and they were out.

Re: Effectiveness of Epidural

I just had my 1st this past Sept.

I had epidural #1 at 6cm. That only effect 1/2 of my body. I felt EVERYTHING (including a catheder) on 1 side. After about 2 hours they called in another dr., took the line out and put #2 in around 8cm. That finally worked.

Was it the greatest thing ever? No. It did make the pain go away and I was able to feel enough pressure to push (for 2 hours) w/o any "pain".

I think it's about getting a balance between relieving pain and still feeling the need and pressure to push.

Oh, they did continue my epi the whole time. Once baby was out I vaguely remember another dr. come in and put something else in my IV. Now THAT was the good stuff!!!

Effectiveness of Epidural

The epi was AMAZING!!!! Mine was in PERFECT. I couldn't feel the pain but was able to still move my legs around. Then when DS's heartrate dropped they tossed and turned me and it must have moved something. I had to get topped off almost every hour. Then an hour into pushing it wore off. It was gone and I was in a world of pain. They told me they can't give me more while I'm pushing, which I've heard before. I would suggest if you are in labor for a long time, try to get topped off (or ask for a drip) before you start to push. Once you start to push, you're on your own.

The catheder however is NOT as amazing! I HATED that thing! But the epi, if I were to go for a VBAC (I ended in a section) next time, I would DEF go for the epi again!

Effectiveness of Epidural

i did not feel a thing from soon after it was put in. Mine probably worked a little too good cause I couldn't feel a thing. not even pressure. DH had to tell me when I was having a contraction. It was fine by me though cause I never really wanted to have a V birth....I would have picked the c-section from the start if I could have.

Once they put the epi in you can't get up to go to the bathroom so you need the catheter.
I also assume that you being numb you wouldn't even feel the urge to pee.

Don't be! The epi was amazing.
And they put the catheter in me after he epi so I didn't feel a thing.
And I didn't feel them remove it either.
And I'm a HUGE baby.
So if I say don't worry- don't worry! Chat Icon

Effectiveness of Epidural

Had an epi at around 7:45am when I was 3cm. Felt numb everywhere from the waist down except for a small section of my left pelvic area but it made the contractions feel like the smallest of AF cramps. I slept until 12pm where they checked me again and I was fully dilated. They wouldn't let me hit the button anymore but I was still mostly numb except for feeling strong contractions in that same spot. The only way to deal with the pain was to push. I didn't feel her coming out though. No "Ring of Fire" at all! I was able to go back to pushing the epi button when they were stitching me up.

They made sure I was numb before inserting the catheter and I didn't feel a thing. I also didn't feel them remove it.
