EI transitition to cpse

My daughter will be 3 in Feb. Her meeting is January 21. I know she may be able to remain in EI til August. Will they recommend her placement for Seotember at this meeting or as it gets closer to Sept? She has always been a very unique case. Her therapists say shed really do well in a typical preschool. But depending on what her Evals show, not sure if they'd suggest center based.

I would think they would start sending out packets shortly after your meeting since I know CPSE slots fill up pretty quickly. My DS' meeting was in April and his placement was for September and we discussed services/type of class and also discussed where I wanted packets to be sent. Have you called/toured different schools? In your case you could always request an integrated classroom setting if she does end up in a center based program.

They generally discuss placement for fall and possibly summer at the meeting, even if the meeting is in January. If things change between January and the fall, you can request another meeting, but if you have an early meeting and they recommend a center based program, it's better to get a spot ASAP.

They may recommend a center based program if she needs pull out services like OT, PT, speech. I think the districts prefer it because it's easier for them to coordinate and schedule therapy that way. If your DD will do well in a typical preschool with a SEIT and related services there, push for it. I know, however, that it was easier for my DS to get an OT at the center based program when they knew he would be there in September than when he was in EI and we had to find an available OT through an agency.

My DS started ABA and speech in a typical preschool and I think it was great for him because he had typical peers that they could pull in for sessions. The downside, however, is that as he got older, he developed some behaviors that the preschool staff was just not trained to deal with when the therapists or special ed staff was not there.

There are pros and cons to both, and it really depends on what your child can handle.
