Re: Electoral College system - yay or nay?
It works well enough without giving complete domination to population centers. If it was just plain popular vote, the entire middle of the nation would be ignored...not that that wouldn't be a half bad idea

I think more people might vote if they felt that every vount was counted and it was based off of popular vote instead of "majority rules" for each state. I'm a nay for the electoral college.

Nay, the candidates just focus more on swing states now. . . if there was no electoral college they would focus on the larger population states. Either way, the entire nation is not getting equal attention.
And like Helen said, more people would vote! I would love to have my vote count for once

Nay...for sure. Every vote should count. It is especially unethical for the person who lives in a state outside of his/her party line. That person just doesn't matter, doesn't get a real say in the democratic process. It's very wrong IMO.

ITA. That's what bothers me about our voting system. We don't live in a Democracy, we live in a Republic. The only time your vote really counts is if you are in a swing state. Then, you have the ability to swing the vote to one party or the other. Other states predominately vote one party or the other, and your vote is insignificant.....
Let's spread Democracy.... let's start with the US!

Re: Electoral College system - yay or nay?
it is unfair for the most populated states to have all the say. it shouldn't matter what the entire state rings in with. they are just imagninary boundaries of land and shouldn't weigh more heavily than the human vote. As long as each person's vote is counted and is significant, then I don't see why the conglomerate of a state majority is relevant at all, especially since they can be governed in a way that is representative of their own majority.

Nay! I think more people would vote if we determined the winner by popular vote.

Re: Electoral College system - yay or nay?
After the 2000 election, I have to say nay. I was so disenchanted by that election - when the candidate I voted for won the popular vote but did not become president. I wondered "what is the point of voting then?"

Re: Electoral College system - yay or nay?
This is the first election when I can really say that I value its importance.
When my Dad goes off on his republican tangents, I tell him, "Shhhhh your vote doesn't matter anyway"

But shouldnt it be the PEOPLE who have the say? Just cause they all live in one state shouldnt make a difference, they are people...each one..and each vote should count.
Of course Im not naive to think this is how it would ever work, which state elections, etc etc etc but it should be IMO

Re: Electoral College system - yay or nay?
Nay. I agree with a previous poster about 2000, it makes no sense that someone can win the popular vote yet lose the election. And I know people who say they aren't going to bother voting from time to time, because NY goes Democrat (these are people in both parties).
If more of our country resides in cities and suburbs these days than rural areas, why are voters in rural areas effectively given more power in choosing the next President? And I agree with a pp, this system makes us more of a republic than a true Democracy.

I was ALWAYS in favor of the electoral college but your post really made me think. The swing state theory is very true. I never thought about that...thanks for the "food for thought."

Re: Electoral College system - yay or nay?
And here we are, 6 Yay, 55 Nay. In a real democracy this issue would be put forth to the people to vote. What the heck are our representatives fighting for if it's not our agendas. 55-6 is disgustingly obvious. The electoral college needs to go because the voters say so. (wish it was so simple )

Re: Electoral College system - yay or nay?
An interesting part of the Electoral College is that even if 100% of a state votes one way, some Electors can vote the other....
http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/thepoliticalsystem/a/electcollege.htm
While the state electors are "pledged" to vote for the candidate of the party that chose them, nothing in the Constitution requires them to do so. In rare instances, an elector will defect and not vote for his or her party's candidate. Such "faithless" votes rarely change the outcome of the election and laws of some states prohibit electors from casting them.
