Re: Electoral College system - yay or nay?
Nay! Get rid of it! It's confusing and outdated!
I feel like this is the first year my vote really counts since VA is a swing state this year.
2000 - Voted in NY for Bush - pointless
2004 - Voted for Kerry in VA - again, pointless
I really think it would get more people out to the polls... I, for one, am so excited about voting this year! I know that it can actually make a difference in which way our electoral votes go.

Re: Electoral College system - yay or nay?
so what if Bush won the popular vote in 2000 and Gore won the election? would you all still feel it is an antiquated system?
some of you said that you think more people would go out and vote, but why should people in VT, RI, DE, MT, SD, ND or other states ever vote since the the more populated states will always decide who is President for them?

it is unfair for the most populated states to have all the say. it shouldn't matter what the entire state rings in with. they are just imagninary boundaries of land and shouldn't weigh more heavily than the human vote. As long as each person's vote is counted and is significant, then I don't see why the conglomerate of a state majority is relevant at all, especially since they can be governed in a way that is representative of their own majority.
True-I agree

This is the first election when I can really say that I value its importance.
When my Dad goes off on his republican tangents, I tell him, "Shhhhh your vote doesn't matter anyway"
LOL I know you are just joking. . .but just curious as to why THIS election makes you value its importance?
I'll be totally and completely honest--I can value its importance this time around because for the first time since I've been able to vote, it's looking like it's going to swing in favor of the candidate that I desperately want to win.
As I said, just being honest.

I think that whoever wins the popular vote should take it all. NY is a more populated state, but all of our voters don't vote Democrat, so its not like the popular states will decide the winner every single time.

Thanks for answering! Looks like he will get the popular vote too if the polls are accurate but I see what you are saying!

YAY!
it is unfair for the most populated states to have all the say.
I have to say that. unlike the senate, the electoral college was developed not because of this idea.
It was developed because the founding fathers wanted the public to vote their opinion, however, they didn't trust their judgement.
the electoral college is supposed to prevent the public from voting a moron or facist into office....
however, as we know, the system is deeply flawed

But with a popular vote, their vote would finally mean something. Their vote would count exactly the same as anyone from any other state. State party lines would no longer matter.
With the current system, no candidate really cares about RI, DE, etc. They don't have enough electoral votes to really make a difference. With the current system, the biggest states have an overwhelming ability to decide the election.
A popular vote would be more fair all around. A few thousand Dems in Texas COULD decide the election. Today, they technically vote Republican because the majority of the state goes that way. I don't want the rest of my state to determine who I want to elect.

Re: Electoral College system - yay or nay?
i voted yay.
i used to think that it should just be the popular vote. on the face of it, it seems to make the most sense.
after doing a lot of research on it a number of years back, i changed my mind. we live in a diverse country ... a country that has diverse geographical elements, population, needs, etc... A President must have some incentive to represent ALL of those regions. W/o the electoral college, rural american and middle america will be left out and candidates will only focus on the most populated areas. Swing states or not, at least now the candidates have canvassed the entire country, heard from different people, etc...
I do not live (and never have lived) in rural america or the mid-west. but, i've been to enough of those states to know their "voice" is different than mine and i think it should still be heard. is the electoral college perfect, probably not. but, i think it does serve a good purpose.

Your missing the point, it would not be about the states, it would be about each citizens vote counting. It doesn't matter that Calfornia has alarger population then say Ohio, its about the nation as a whole casting there vote and who ever gets the majority wins period.

If the popular vote determines the winner, than it is NOT about states, it's about votes...If there are 200 million people voting, and 150 million vote for one candidate, that candidate wins...it doesn't matter which state those voters live in....
And yes, if Bush had won the popular vote in 2000, then I would agree he should have been elected...

That is how I feel. The borders of states are imaginary for all real purposes. Big Nay.
