Elementary School Teachers - Heroin
Story
Since articles about teachers always gets a lot of points of views, I was wondering what everyone thinks about these teachers. I personally think that they should be terminated, I would not be comfortable sending my child to a school where this was going on in a faculty bathroom.

What I don't understand is they were all going to take the test to clear themselves. Why is the union holding them back? And what would happen if they went against the union and did it anyway?

So a person can post a video of a dad taping kids falling, but a post about teachers refusing to take a drug test has no point? Some of the worlds DUMBEST debates take place on this board, but something that has to do with education has no point?

I don't think this is a drama topic at all - take it being a "teacher" out of the equation... would you want your doctor caring for your while potentially high on heroin, or your child's day care provider, or your lawyer, or your bus driver? It doesn't have anything to do with them being a teacher per se, but rather about a person with a certain responsibility doing his/her job while on heroin.

That was exactly what I thought. Why are they not taking the drug test if they are innocent? Why must they protect the guilty and hurt themselves in the process? I will never understand that.

Re: Elementary School Teachers - Heroin
The whole thing sounds fishy, would love to hear the union's point of view as to why they advised the teachers not to take the test. It is scary to think that someone was not only shooting up heroin, but so high/stupid not to dispose of and hide the evidence properly. Hopefully this was just a plant and no one is really doing the heroin.
I think teachers should be subjected to the same random drug tests as other employees such as police or firefighters, with that being said it should no be implemented overnight either. This case is a bit different since there is different evidence.....
My guess is some of these teachers partook (is partook a word?) is some other less serious recreational drugs (still illegal) on their own time and are afraid of being thrown under the bus for that.

I think the problem it comes from you...and you are obviously a teacher/union basher. Being a teacher, I honestly don't understand why the union is telling them not to submit the drug tests, especially when they were going to do it in the first place. I think that if a person is doing heroin (or any drugs), they should be fired! I never understood why teachers weren't drug tested, but when my husband worked at Geico after college as a customer service rep, he was tested.

Re: Elementary School Teachers - Heroin
Personally, I'd have to hear from a current teacher and the process/screening that is used when hiring and throughout. I mean is random drug tests done on teachers? If so, then the school seems to have a right to do this at any time. I would like to think there was random drug testing in schools so that teachers are on their feet. Like, I said I don't know the rules and regs in schools so I can't comment on this case in particular.

I have never worked in , or heard about any school system /district with any sort of drug testing in any part of the hiring process or beyond that.

Elementary School Teachers - Heroin
Without a doubt those teachers should be drug tested. It's beyond me that the union would advise them not to. If there is a teacher with a lethal drug habit such as heroin, why would they want to subject themselves to such liability? Not to mention the risk it poses to the students - the danger, the lack of comprehension if under the influence.
I mean, come the fluck on. What happened to protecting students? I would be outraged if my children were in a school where heroin and needles were found and NOTHING was being done about it. I'd constantly worry "what if?" What if Mrs. Brown shot up on a field trip and couldn't care for the students, what is Mr. Smith overdosed in the bathroom, the scenarios are endless.

Still wondering why the Union put a stop to the teachers that were going to test to clear their names.

Me either. That being said, I think anyone found guilty of doing drugs at work (regardless of position) should be fired immediately.

Ita I think teachers should be held to a high standard, heroin in the bathroom is unacceptable and I'm not sure how there is even a debate here...

Very true , so far every teacher is even over the whole thing. Heroin users do not belong in schools, and why are the teachers who were seen in the bathroom not chomping at the bit to clear their names despite the union's recommendation ?

Re: Elementary School Teachers - Heroin
If the teachers are not guilty, then there should be no objection to a drug test to clear themselves. Union or not. What they do on their own time is no one's business, but what they do during working hours is the municipality's business.
God forbid a child gained access to the teacher's bathroom and found the drugs/needles.
DH is a (union) bus operator and has to undergo mandatory random drug testing. Recreational drug use will show up in a random - takes a while for certain drugs to be excreted from the body. Even excessive alcohol will show up a day later. As annoying as it is to take the test, he has no problem with it as there is nothing for him to hide.
