Elf of the Shelf question

So, I'm Jewish so don't really know the whole Elf on the Shelf thing, but think it's a great concept. Just wondering how you introduce it to your LO?
Asking bc I was at the store the other day and see a whole bunch right at the entrance. I'm thinking... if it's supposed to come from the North Pole then why are there elves stacked up at the store on sale.

Although I don't have an Elf on the Shelf my DS hates the talking and singing Elmo dolls so I told him he'd get that if he doesn't listen. My boy would rather get coal then a talking a singing stuffed animal.

I think there is an elf on the shelf book and movie that explains it. Oh and there is a mensch on a bench if you want to extend the tradition to your home. I think there is also a macabee one too. We don't have them in our home though.

we just started it this year with my son- he's 3.
the Elf comes with a book that's a short story that explains the whole idea. its written from the elf. the whole " I can talk to Santa and tell him if you're good or bad, and every night I go home and report back to him. Then, you'll find me in a new place when you wake up in the morning" kind of thing.
So, for DS, on the first morning (yesterday) I put out the Elf like he was reading his own book. I put it by the bathroom sink, since we go potty as soon as DS wakes up since it was a Sunday, I had time to sit and read the book with DS right away and get into the whole thing with him. There is also a movie, too I think.
as far as them being in the store, I bought it when DS wasn't with me.... and if he sees them in the store he just says "theres an elf like my elf!" the whole being from the north pole thing doesn't click with him yet...

The elves are at the store bc they are sent there from the north pole so they can be adopted. Some are sent straight to their homes (ordered online and shipped, haha). It's all in the movie ;)

Ahhh... Thanks! That makes sense. Very cute.

No mench on the bench for us. Probably would scare my 4 yr old anyway. Besides, Hanukkah is almost over.
