This is what you should do:
Get Lowes and Home Depot to give you their LOWEST quote.
Then have a Lowes 10% moving coupon ready (which Home Depot will accept) to lower the price even more.
Then tell Empire to better the Lowes or Home Depot deal, and better it including the 10% off.
If they don't... tell them no thank you.

Empire quoted me $700 for a 12x13 room. I got the same carpet at Carpet Depot for $400. Shop around.

Empire was the last quote we got. When we told them our other quote (which was MUCH lower) they dropped to that price immediately.
We will not be going with them.

We used Home Depot and had them do the stairs, the upstairs hallway and three bedrooms - cost $2000.
They were done in one day and were very courteous and professional. Highly recommend them.
I was told by a friend of mine that you dont need to get the plushest carpet - but get the best padding. We got the best padding and went with a brand of carpet named Grammercy Park. The carpet looks great (one year later) and everyone comments on how soft it is.

I wouldn't even bother "getting back to them" with a quote from someone else. Why even give them your business if they are trying to rip you off in the first place? Give it to the one who gives you the best quote.
And ITA about going with a small, local person - they need the work more than HD or Lowes.
If you are intersted, my next door neighbor does carpeting and I can give you his #. He has done all of our carpeting but of course doesn't charge me for labor, so I can't say for sure that he's the cheapest guy out there. But, he's honest, hard working, and has a family to support. Plus he's done a great job in our house
