Epileptic Drivers

POSSIBLE controversial topic...
behave al

So i was reading the newspaper and saw this article about a terrible car accident that killed 3 people

the driver of a mini van had a seizure which is what caused the accident

DO you think that people with a history of Epilepsy should be driving?

If so...do you think that it should be regulated somehow?

Re: Epileptic Drivers

Well for someone who is Seizure free for 35 and a half years almost 36 years I have to say If a Person is NOT controlled on medicine By phenobarital or what ever brand of meds they would take for the seizure NO I do Not think they should drive. But if they are controlled for as Long As I have been and Have No seizures Yes they should drive.

Re: Epileptic Drivers

I know several people who have been diagnosed with epilepsy. I think there are a lot of things to take into consideration. Especially that they are in the constant care of a doctor.

Re: Epileptic Drivers

That's a tricky question, and I really think it has to be judged by the neurologist on a case-by-case basis. If it's someone who has seizures that are not fully controlled by medication, then no, I don't think they are driving. Then there's someone like my nephew who had seizures when he was little, takes depakote, and has been seizure free for about 4 1/2 years now. If he is still doing this well when he's driving age, I don't think he should be prevented from driving.

Re: Epileptic Drivers

I know with my brother he had to be on medication and cleared medically before he could get his permit - it may be different though since it was ruled out as epillepsy (sp?) - just seizures after a concussion (they lasted about 2 years... he had maybe 8-10 over that 2 year period).

I know my cousin that is epileptic does not drive... I guess maybe it depends on the severity Chat Icon

ETA: My brother had to be seizure-free for 6 months w/ a doctor's note before he could drive.

Re: Epileptic Drivers

People should be going to the Neurologist every year to get EEG and get a their yearly annual check up.

You had a seizure once when you were one years old and that was it?

Did anyone ever try or think that maybe you should see if you need the medication at all?

But even if one went years without having a seizure...there still could be the possibility no?
Of breakthough seizures...

Epilepy can not be seen or predicated through bloodwork. Unfortuanately, not one medication works for everyone and the amounts are case by case.

Well at my job it is...

They take blood levels all the time to make sure that their medicatios are right

so they are not overly sedated as well as under medicated

Re: Epileptic Drivers

Doctors do not always have all the right answers. My BF husband was told he would never have a grand mal seizure and he did. Luckily he was at home when this happened.

There are so many reasons why someone could have a seizure other than epilepsy.

I think people need to consult their neurologist and be educated on their diagnose.

My family agreed... they didn't let him drive for a year, even though he was medically cleared at six months.

But, it had also been ruled out as epillepsy through a series of tests... it might be different since it wasn't long term (he hasn't had a seizure in over a year and a half and he's been driving for about 2 months now).

I did not just have one I had many Seizures I had every single one you can think of. BUT there is maybe a Possiblity I can get off the meds BUT I dont think I would want to chance that because of how many years I been seizure free Does that make sense?

Re: Epileptic Drivers

My mom was diagnosed at the age of 35, almost 25 years ago. I remember, at the time, some peole were not very educated on the topic and would not know how to respond to it.

Re: Epileptic Drivers

My situation goes like this.
I had 2 siezures 2.5 years ago. 1st one I was home alone, had no clue what happened to me and blacked out. 2nd one, driving to FL with my family and it happened again..They all witnessed it in the car.
Was not allowed to drive for one year on the medication. When they ruled out epilepsy (It was an allergic reaction to medication) they took me off the meds..Scary, YES. While I was off the meds, again, I wasn't allowed to drive in case it happened again.
Knock on wood, it was all an allergic reaction and it will never happen again. I have to avoid certain meds that contain different ingredients.
Sorry to babble on and on..In answer to your question, I think that as long as your on the meds, under dr.s care, you should be able to drive.

Honestly, I think if they are under a doctors care, and on meds, then yes, they should be able to drive. A person can have a heart attack, or an aneurysm while behind the wheel as well. Anything is possible.

Re: Epileptic Drivers

My mom had brain surgery about 5 years ago. It has helped but not 100%. My mom was hoping to be medication free.
