My mom was diagnosed at the age of 35, almost 25 years ago. I remember, at the time, some peole were not very educated on the topic and would not know how to respond to it.
i agree.....and i have some experience with it
and i have to say...i see a LOT of break through seizures...
Even for people who have been seizure free for close to their entire lives I would really love to know the Breakthroughs and How they can detect where the seizures came from because if they can control what causes people to have a seizure in the First place that would be a great accomplishment!

My mom had brain surgery about 5 years ago. It has helped but not 100%. My mom was hoping to be medication free.
WOW...she had the surgery specifically for the seizures?
Or was there something wrong that possibly was causing the seizures and they were trying to correct it?

It's really a terrible condition, and I can't even imagine how it must feel. Unfortunately, I don't feel people with epilepsy should be permitted to drive without some type of supervision or another legal driver in the car with them.

My mom went through many years of extensive testing. First she was told she was not a candidate. Then she went to NYU. They pin pointed exactly where the seizures where taking place and then removed those two parts of the brain. They could not remove all of it b/c it was too close to her memory.

My BF's husaband went to NYU after my mom recommended it. We had fun with the nurses. During testing you are on video. We had a few laughs.

i must admit...i am more of the hesitant kind of person..
and i think that just being seizure free for a certain amount of time isn't enough monitoring

Re: Epileptic Drivers
2 of my best friends (coincidentally) are epileptic and take medication every day. They also visit their doctor regularly. So I would say yes, they should be allowed to drive if they take the necessary steps to make it safe.

Re: Epileptic Drivers
I used to work with a girl who has epilepsy. She was driving - two times - had seizures and got into accidents. She had her license taken away for a certain amount of time until she was seizure free for I think it was 6 months. To me it has to be the scariest thing ever. I completely feel for anyone that has to go through this!

Re: Epileptic Drivers
I also worked with someone who had the surgery. She was in her mid-30s and hadn't learned to drive because of the epilepsy. I remembered her saying that she was going to learn but she had to go a certain length of time w/out them. I forget how long.
It's a sad thing, but I think for their own safety and that of others that they should not be allowed to drive.

My brother had Epilepsy - he has to maintain 3 months being seizure-free iin order to keep his licence.
He is also on medication to regulate his seizure disorder.

Re: Epileptic Drivers
Honestly, I think if they are under a doctors care, and on meds, then yes, they should be able to drive. A person can have a heart attack, or an aneurysm while behind the wheel as well. Anything is possible.
i agree. anything can happen to anyone while driving, heart attack etc. but if they are under a doctors care and taking their medication and have been seizure free, then i think it is ok. my DH was born with epilepsy. i checked the DMV website for him a while ago and it said a person with history of epilepsy has to be seizure free for one year before driving

Re: Epileptic Drivers
you have to be 6 months seizure free.... but i think it MAY also depend on the individual/case by case. there are different levels of epilepsy as well. for example, if youre grand-mal youre going to have a harder time getting a liscense.

Re: Epileptic Drivers
I am an epileptic and have been since the age of 3 and I am now 44. I have never driven in my life.
I hade brain surgery for epilepsy in 1997 (at age 35) and I had a mini stroke during the surgery. 3 years later I had 2 or 3 more seizures when they tried to take me off my meds to see if I could do without them. So they put me back on my meds and I have not had any seizures in 5 1/2 years. Legally I could go apply for my drivers license. I don't because of other health issues (loss of my right peripheral vision from a stroke during my brain surgery)
The problem is in NY at least doctors ar not required to report anything to DMV therefore when people get to the questions or are asked the questions regarding seizures they very simply can and do LIE just to get their license or not give it up. I think this is totally wrong but there really is no regulation.
PS: This answer is based on the info that I know as an epileptic but also one that NEVER did get a license so if it is not up to date I apologize.

Re: Epileptic Drivers
There are DMV regulations but only if the person identifies themselves as having a seizure disorder. I think this is tough, everyone reacts to their meds differently, so I think it is hard to say as a blanket statement. Plus there are many different types of seizures. Not all seizures would be bad enough to cause an accident.

You are correct that not everyone identifies themself as an epileptic. Many meds have different reactions especially if the Dr is changing them at any point. However, I think any type of seizure would be bad enough to cause an accident. Every seizure causes a person to lose enough conciousness to be a big problem! I have had several types of seizures!

Re: Epileptic Drivers
First off, every case of epilepsy is different. To make a generalization that all epileptics shouldn't drive is not right...My brother started having seizures 2 years ago at 21 years-old...He has a disorder where he only has seizures in his sleep...The doctor said he will NEVER have one when he is awake and he never has....He went into the NYU medical center for different studies and tried new medications until he found one that was right for him....He still goes to his seizure specialist every few months to make sure everything is going ok....He has now been seizure-free for over a year....His doctor never instructed him to stop driving throughout all of the testing because they know the type of seizures he has will not occur any other time but sleeping.

I wasn't comparing the conditions - it was more about the "anything is possible" scenario.

I don't feel people with epilepsy should be permitted to drive without some type of supervision or another legal driver in the car with them.
This is the comment I am referring to...I am just stating my opinion regarding it.

that is not exactly what you wrote now it is
that person is expressing their thoughts...
THEY DID NOT SAY "generalize" and say that "ALL epileptics" shouldn't drive

How so Jen? A seuizure, heart attack, or aneurysm can happen at any time. Should people with high cholesterol, who smoke, and are overweight not be able to drive?
