Re: Epileptic Drivers

First off, every case of epilepsy is different. To make a generalization that all epileptics shouldn't drive is not right...My brother started having seizures 2 years ago at 21 years-old...He has a disorder where he only has seizures in his sleep...The doctor said he will NEVER have one when he is awake and he never has....He went into the NYU medical center for different studies and tried new medications until he found one that was right for him....He still goes to his seizure specialist every few months to make sure everything is going ok....He has now been seizure-free for over a year....His doctor never instructed him to stop driving throughout all of the testing because they know the type of seizures he has will not occur any other time but sleeping.
I have have to say a dr CANNOT guarantee that someone will NEVER have a seizure at a certain time.
I always had Complex-Partial seizures from the age of 3 then suddenly at the age of 12 had a Tonic-Conic (Grand Mal) seizure. There is no guarantee that your brother will ONLY have them at night! If for some reason he was driving & had one during the day was the Dr going to pay all the bills? I don't think so!!!!!
Although I am happy he is seizure free for over a year & with that he can go for his license. Has he told DMV?

WHO SAID THAT?
I don't feel people with epilepsy should be permitted to drive without some type of supervision or another legal driver in the car with them.
This is the comment I am referring to...I am just stating my opinion regarding it.
that is not exactly what you wrote now it is
that person is expressing their thoughts...
THEY DID NOT SAY "generalize" and say that "ALL epileptics" shouldn't drive
COME ON NOW
I am just stating my opinion regarding this topic....I responded to that poster's comment....No need to do to me

Posted by HollaGirl Honestly, I think if they are under a doctors care, and on meds, then yes, they should be able to drive. A person can have a heart attack, or an aneurysm while behind the wheel as well. Anything is possible.
These are my thoughts as well.
sorry but i don't think i can compare epilepsy and those conditions
How so Jen? A seuizure, heart attack, or aneurysm can happen at any time. Should people with high cholesterol, who smoke, and are overweight not be able to drive? How so....
How is Epilepsy different from an anurysm or a heart attack?
ONE is a disease...the other two are not

ok, so should someone with heart disease not be allowed to drive?
depeds on what is wrong and the severity of it
And just like my answer with epilepsy...i think there should be some way of monitoring the condition more that..Well...didn't have a heart attack this year..so all is good
AND YES...i would hope that should someone be at serious risk for having a heart attack...well maybe they shouldn't be driving..

I can respect that, I just cant see why a person with Epilepsy, is different from a person with Vertigo, Anxiety, Heart Condition, etc.

me....i personally consider it very different...
a person who has a seizure petit or especially gand mal no longer be able to control their movements or even stay conscience..
Someone with Vertigo or Anxiety imo certainly would and could be able to pull their car over to the side if need be
Heart attacks well like i said IMO that s different to me

DO you think that people with a history of Epilepsy should be driving?
If so...do you think that it should be regulated somehow?
I dated an epileptic for quite a while - in the time that I knew him, he did not possess a driver's license. He wouldn't reapply for one until he was seizure free for one year - because they may never happen despite his medication, he is very happy to live in NYC and use mass transit.
Because of my experience with him, I think that a person with epilepsy should be seizure free for a certain amount of time and should make this decision VERY carefully with guidance from their doctor.

Do you mean does he sense it coming? He says that when he is sleeping and wakes up, right before the seizure, he can't move or speak and feels trapped in his body....Within 10 seconds of waking up is when all of his seizures have happened... The only good thing is that he is always in his bed when they happen so he hasn't gotten hurt.

Yes that is what I meant and that is good IF he ALWAYS gets that before a seizure & hopefully if he ever had one during the day he would get the aura first so he can make sure he is safe.

People with Epilepsy should NOT be driving.
My cousin has Epilepsy, and she DOES NOT DRIVE. She has in the past and has had ceizures behind the wheel. She owns a Corvette Stingray, and can NEVER drive it! It just looks pretty in the garage!

Are you saying EVER? What if they are TRULY seizure free for at least a year as required by law?
I have been seizure free for almost 5 1/2 years. Are you saying I shouldn't?
Legally I could go for my license but I don't due to other issues BUT I COULD!!!!!!
