Equifax breach - check your credit reports
143 million people's personal data was compromised. Go to equifax website to check to see if your information is affected. You need to provide your last name and last six digits of SSN. If you sign up for protection plan they offer, you will waive your right to be part of any class action lawsuits. So upset that both DH's and my information was compromised. If you get a message that your info is compromised, monitor your cc and bank accounts, change your passwords to emails and bank accounts.
ETA- not a bad idea to place a credit freeze. Only disadvantage is you need to temporarily lift the freeze when you need to apply for a loan, get a new phone under contract, or get new credit cards.

Me too. This is the worst place for a breach to happen. Credit Bureaus have ALL your personal information. Unlike other accounts that may have some personal information.

Re: Equifax breach - check your credit reports
DH and I were compromised as wel. He already has a credit freeze on his account because identity theft. I have credit karma and will just watch it everyday
Freezing your credit isn't as easy as you would think. And unfreezing it for use is even more of a clusterf&ck. So I'll stick to CK for now and hope nothing comes up

Re: Equifax breach - check your credit reports
I have been compromised and I'm pretty sketched out.. I'm really supposed to go back to equifax to add an alert onto my credit now? How can I trust I'm not just gonna get hacked again? LOL.

But how would hackers get your passwords? Are you passwords for you bank accounts, credit cards etc stored with equifax? This isn't making sense to me. I feel like if they got your poersonal info, they got it without needing your passwords to get it right? So what is changing your passwords going to do now?

Im confused. Was the breach at Equifax, if Equifax has your info? How do we tell if we have been breached?

Equifax breach - check your credit reports
How do we find out if we were definitely impacted? I went on their site and put in my info and the message I got back was "may have been impacted"

I have the same question why do we need to change our passwords why would equifax even have my passwords and if they are getting my passwords through personal information changing isn't going to do anything cause they can just change it again.
What information do they have anyway except your credit history and I guess your social IMO if they have your social changing passwords will do nothing!

That means that someone unauthorized (hackers) have your data, along with 140 million other peoples'.
It doesn't guarantee that your data will be used, which is why they say "may have been"
I'm on the impacted list, but DW isn't.

They won't have your passwords (possibly your equifax password if you set up an account with them, but that would be it), since passwords are stored locally with each account holder (Verizon, Apple, Google, etc, all have their own account and password database that isn't connected to anything else).
They potentially have anything related to your credit history. Name, address, SSN, mortgage account number, how much you owe on which accounts, how much you have in your accounts, CC numbers, etc.
Anything that you see in your credit report, is potentially what someone has.

That's what I'm wondering. Equifax is a credit reporting agency, so they have your social, d/o/b your employer, your address, and other credit lines you have. So the worst thing someone could do is apply for a credit card/loan in your name. BUT, if they put a new address the credit card application, I would think Equifax would red flag that after this breach, and relay that to the creditor.

I'm not sure if I need to, but I've looked up my credit report through equifax before and I tend to use the same passwords, so I just assumed it's better safe than sorry. But I'm thinking my credit report doesn't show my debit cards right? I'm confused what info they could have besides dob, social and my debts. Would they have credit card numbers?

Debit cards aren't on credit reports.

Equifax breach - check your credit reports
I just checked and mine was breached. But, I'm not freaking out about it. If someone steals my info and runs up debt in my name, Equifax will pay for it...and everyone else's since I'm sure there will be tons of lawsuits if that happens.

I read yesterday if you check to see if you are compromised, you're immediately out of any class actions that may be brought against them.
