I read yesterday if you check to see if you are compromised, you're immediately out of any class actions that may be brought against them.

In order to get the free year of monitoring, you have to agree that you won't participate in any class action lawsuit or sue them individually.

So you can check without issues, its only if you sign up for their product that takes away your rights.

This is why I refuse to make any payments, check my bank accounts or pay bills online, or even purchase online.

geeze..Im even scared to put my last 6 digits of my SS# inChat Icon

I thought I was in the minority. I never check my accounts on line or purchase on line. I did that once 5 yrs ago for a college book.

People must laugh at me, I dont even buy on amazon never had a prime card.

Our SS is used for everything including getting a cable account. You can refuse but they can refuse you services. Pisses me off. A law should be made sayings it illegal to ask for SS etc.

That's not true. They clarified that section. If you do agree to their one year free credit monitoring service, you can still participate in a class-action suit (or individual suits) regarding the breach. You are waiving any class-action suits regarding the credit monitoring software.

If you do sign up for the free one year of monitoring, you have to watch the expiration date, since they will start automatically start billing you after that year is up.

If you have a mortgage, car loan, credit card, etc, then Equifax probably has your information.

I didn't realize that they clarified, thanks!

I don't buy into the whole free service they are offering. The fact that they are letting anyone get the free trial (and not just people impacted) to me makes this feel like a marketing and auto-renew opportunity.

Absolutely. Especially since it's their own company's credit monitoring service. And the fact that it auto-renews in a year as a pay service. A little too self-serving for my taste.

I know... if they can't monitor their own data, and notify themselves of something happening, how reliable can they be with monitoring a subset of their data?

I've been reading up on these credit monitoring services. Most of them really just watch your credit report, and signal you when something weird shows up on your report. It's something that you can do yourself. They don't have any special tools are access or anything.

Exactly. This is not about using your credit card online. This is a company that checks credit.... for loans, leases, etc.

DH was compromised, I wasn't.

Also, credit monitoring isn't going to do any good if someone tries to use your social security number for something else.

The cynical part of me wonders if this is all a scam to get people to sign up for their services. Someone high in the company dumped stocks the night before the announcement. I think of the Target breech - they took a hit at the time but now it's like nothing happened. Part of me wonders if this was someone's hairbrained scheme to say they were hacked so they could get business with their free monitoring. And then a year from now their stock will be back up.

I don't think I'm going to sign up for the monitoring. I just joined Credit Karma and they monitor my credit reports for free (TransUnion and Equifax). I'll just log in every few weeks to see if something was opened under my name.

There was just an announcement made that they won't require a credit card to sign up for the free monitoring, and they won't automatically start billing you after the free year.

Too much PR backlash, apparently....

Not foolish, you just weren't aware.

There are 3 agencies, so the recommended route is to get a report from one of the agencies every 4 months. Since you can get one report free per year from each of the 3 agencies, if you stagger them every 4 months, you can keep a pretty good tab on what's going on.

This whole thing really frustrates me. I'm not so much worried, but find it amazing that this happened to the very people we're supposed to rely on to check/protect our credit. I feel like I can't trust anyone or anything to be competent or reliable at this point.
