Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
Do you work in a profession that has a stereotype that is nothing like you? Or an image that is frustrating because outsiders don't actually understand everything you do?
I'm in IT, so I'm always joked about the "did you try rebooting it"? solution...
or the people who own a computer, and know a few DOS commands, so they think they are experts...
.... and we don't all live in our parent's basements....

LOL I imagine you also get everyone you ever made the acquatinance of asking you for help with their home computers ,smart phones, tablets.
I am in IT too, but not in a technical capacity- I work for an IT company, but I'm in service management- so I manage those smart techy types you are talking about. So no real steerotypes for me....thank God!

Re: Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
Not me. I'm in the telecom industry. My mom does. She was an account (retired CPA now). I always feel like I heard accoutants are boring and no fun. LOL! That is the opposite of my mom. She is very social, goes out a lot, loves her good drinks and has a great sense of humor and sense of style. Her and my dad still 50 years later are romantic and fun. Oh, and my dad is a civil engineer. I think he's more of the stereotype. LOL! Very good with numbers, organized, always dressed well and clean looking. LOL! Although he also does drink a lot more now that he's retired.

I'm a receptionist, so I'm supposed to be rude, unhelpful, and sitting there filing my nails and snapping my gum... oh wait...

No I don't get annoyed even though I don't fit it at all. I'm not even the right gender I find it funny because it's true! I am constantly surrounded by Wall St guys and a lot of them really are that douchey

Or they assume you're an assistant. I hate when wholesalers come in and address my male counterparts without addressing me and then they wonder why they don't see too many tickets dropping.

Exactly! The guys I work with also assume the woman in the group will take care of everything related to our admin to show her our appreciation (AA day, Christmas, her birthday) and that pisses me off. One year when I was on maternity leave she just didn't get anything! But I digress...

Re: Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
I'm an accountant and hate the stereotype (boring, uncreative, blah). Lol. I'm super creative and outgoing and even had a job in a very creative field (cake decorating). Most of all though, I hate the millenial stereotype.. I'm quite the opposite. I've been working since I was 14 and never expected anything handed over to me. All of the partners went on a retreat and the hot topic was millenials, that's all I'm hearing about lately. Lol.

Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
Doesn't bother me. I'm an attorney and am always up for a good lawyer joke!
And no, I don't think I fit the sterotype

This is my favorite lawyer joke, since it also involves Engineers....
An Engineer dies and goes to hell. He's hot and miserable, so he decides to take action. The A/C has been busted for a long time, so he fixes it. Things cool down quickly.
The moving walkway motor jammed, so he unjams it. People can get from place to place more easily.
The TV was grainy and unclear, so he fixes the connection to the Satellite dish and now they get hundreds of high def channels.
One day, God decides to look down on Hell to see how his grand design is working out and notices that everyone is happy and enjoying umbrella drinks. He asks the Devil what's going on?
The Devil replies, "Things are great down here since you sent us that engineer."
"What?? An engineer? I didn't send you one of those, that must have been a mistake. Send him back up right this minute."
The Devil responds, "No way! We are going to keep our engineer. We like this guy."
God demands, "If you don't send him to me immediately, I'll sue!"
The Devil laughs. "Where are YOU going to get a lawyer?"

I work in theatre as most people know.
I get annoyed when people ask me if I can get them Hamilton tickets. They're either serious or they think they're really cute and I'm just like "STFU I've heard this eleventy billion times."

Re: Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
I work for a Japanese company.
They stereotype us Americans as being lazy because we leave work early (on time !), don't stay until very late in the evening like they do.
What they don't understand is that we Americans have a work-life balance, so we work to get our work done, go home and spend time with our families. Japanese are major procrastinators and are great at wasting time to look busy. Underlings do not leave the office until the boss does.

The "IT Crowd" is one of my favorite British shows! I'd never heard "have you tried turning it off and on?" before that show.

omg yes!! I'm in IT too, I'm an ethical hacker, so I get the same as you...plus...so can you hack my bank and get me money?? ummm...no! or...can you fix my ITunes? no!!! people think because I work in IT i know ALL aspects of IT. plus I'm the only woman so I'm also seen as the project manager or assistant. until i open my mouth and they learn quickly.
ETA my husband is also in IT...but he totally fits the stereotype lol he's a huge nerd, video game geek and plays magic and D&D.

Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
I'm an accountant and I hate the boring/plain stereotype associated with my profession. People also expect accountants to dress poorly so people are always surprised when I say my profession. I've heard "you don't dress like an accountant" many times.

Re: Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
I'm a SAHM, so I do nothing all day, and apparently watch a lot of soaps ((never watched one in my life)). I also love that people give my DH props for all he does for our family, and basically make it seem like I mooch off him hahah, he does do a lot for our family, but I do a lot too..
My DH is a computer engineer, and it's hilarious what people ask him. From can you fix my phone/computer/tablet to can you fix the electric in my house. I'd say 90% of his work day is managing people below him and above him, and only "fixes" computers if they hired a new person who isn't good at their job lol.

Banker here, rude, obnoxious money hungry sales person who wants nothing more than to charge you for your checking accounts and laugh about it.
I am also a FTWM, you know the one who dumps her kids off so she can only raise them part time, and I'm to worried about my career to care who's raising my kids. I mean I miss so much, don't I but I must not care because I would rather work HAHAHAHA??
