I am shocked that over 125 people say they've done it many times. It's stealing!
I was just going to edit my post to say that...there is no excuse to do that...get up and find someone else to give you a check if you can't find your waiter/waitress
Exactly! I used to waitress and I had one table walk out without paying once. It came right out of my check. Luckily the person had only gotten breakfast and their bill wasn't for that much. You're not screwing the restaurant when you do this, you're screwing the waiter/waitress. I can see tipping poorly or not not tipping at all if the waiter/waitress is bad, but not paying at all is stealing.
Or maybe if you are really ****** off complain to the manager and demand % off the bill or something... I can't imagine not paying..although sometimes when I'm waiting a long time for a check, i really feel like saying "well if they don't want to come get ym money, I don't have to give it to them."

Re: Ever skip out on a check?
I'm too scared. But I hate that my dad's friend does it all of the time! Once when I was younger, our two families ate out together and when it was time to pay he said, 'Why don't you all go ahead, I've got this.' He never paid and we had no idea till after the fact!

OMG! That's awful on SO many levels!
ETA We were at a hookah bar once, and this guy ordered way more than we all wanted, and then order himself about 5 red bulls. When we split up the check, everyone put in, plus a $20 tip for the waitress. After everyone was making their way out (FH and I were still there), this guy picked up the money and pretended to count it, and pocketed a $20!!!!!!!! First of all, that was the waitress' tip that he took, and 2nd of all, he took it from all of us!!

Re: Ever skip out on a check?
No. It's stealing plain and simple. I've asked for my check when my servers seemed busy.
Also, I'm a former waitress.... but even if I wasn't it's eating and drinking and not paying which is stealing.

I know it's terrible and it makes me so angry - once I was old enough to cut out of family/friend plans, I refused go out to dinner with him.
And the 5 red bull man - too!

He was unbelievable, he made us get 2 hookahs for the group to share, which was way too much since not everyone was smoking, he just wanted 2 flavors, and we all had to pay for it, and then he ordered =5 red bulls, tried to pawn some of them off on other people, and STOLE a $20...oh and this is after we all went to dinner and he didn't pay, but I can't prove it was him!

Re: Ever skip out on a check?
I know that people sometimes get drunk and forget (I've chased many out the door and a few down 46th street), but I too am shocked at the # of peopel to just intentionally get up and walk out without paying.
I know that it is frustrating waiting for your check, but you can always walk to the hostess and ask for the manager or for your check. Don't tip the waitress if the service was that bad, but no matter how bad it was you should still pay for what you consumed.

Never did that, but I've left without leaving a tip several times due to poor service.

Re: Ever skip out on a check?
I Never have! As much as I hate waiting around forever to be given the check, I would never walk out.
When our waiter/waitress is nowhere to be found, I find someone who works there to go get our check, I dont care who brings it over.....I would feel horrible doing it for an appetizer, nevermind, a HUGE order!
And besides, what if I ever go there again........then what????
Embarrasing!

I know! I was annoyed once when a group of us wante dto go to a dinner & but one preson wsiad we had to go somewhere else, b/c he had recently skippe doput on a check.
Oncee at Chevy's, after an evening of neglect from out waitress, we didn't get a bill & after we tracked down the waitress she said the register was broken & would have to hand write it, but that never came either so we made up an amount & realized later that we actually underpaid. I felt a little bad, but we tried.

Re: Ever skip out on a check?
I cannot belive that so many would go to a resturant/bar and not pay. I have never done something like that.
I have had to chase down a manager to get my check and once there was no manager or any wait staff to be found, so I went to the front, got a menu and figured out what our bill would be with tax and left that but no tip since they left us waiting for so long. (Over 1 hour)

Never. I'm really surpried too that so many people do this. I've never even not left a tip - even if the service was terrible - I have this guilt complex.
Lisa, that was so nice of you to go back the next day!

Re: Ever skip out on a check?
WOW!!! I cant believe I came back to all these responses. Although it upsets me to see how many people have done it often, I cant help think people voted just to get a rile out of everyone else. We haven't heard for anyone else that has done it more than once.
And just to state, I didnt do it intentionally. I was with a group of friends and I was furious that we waited more than 2 hours for a check. I was tired of waiting and said, "you know, anybody else would have just left under these circumstances" and left a guesstimate of our share with a friend. I guess they all took my advice and left shortly after us without paying. She just emailed me today to say she still has my money. So yes, it was my unintentional idea, and technically I did skip out on the check. Which is why I wanted to post this poll to see if this is done often.

Re: Ever skip out on a check?
Never have and never will. You can always find someone to track down a check. I've had to saunter up to the hostess podium to find someone or a manager, but never would I leave nothing. I would take a guess and leave the money. If I didn't have the cash, I would go up to the bar or even the kitchen to find someone.
I wouldn't have waited 2 hrs for my waitress to come back, it would have taken me no more than 20 minutes to start my search for another employee to take my payment.

Nope, I know too many people who are in the business to do this and not feel incredibly guilty about it.

Re: Ever skip out on a check?
If the service is THAT BAD... you are better off bytching up a storm to the manager. They will take off practically everything off the check.
Then the server usually gets written up.

Re: Ever skip out on a check?
I find it funny that the smoking post no one admitted they smoked but people are willing to admit they ran out on checks. AS Heidla said-most restaurants take this from the server-if you can't find your server you should find a manager. What if you bought stuff at the Gap and there was no one at the counter-you would just walk out? No because you would get caught! I think thats the difference here-not wheter its morally right but the chances are much less to get caught
