Re: Everything happens for a reason....

I do believe it. Although with things going on in my life right now - I'm sick of hearing it.

I just want to hear that everything is going to work out the way I want it to. Chat Icon

Re: Everything happens for a reason....

I look at it like this.. I have had some pretty bad awful things happen to me in my life as well

1 2 of my babies died
2 my Father died of leukimia at a very young age
3 My sisters and 7 year old nephew both have Celiac disease
4 My dh cant find work
This list can go on and on but I also have had wonderful things happen...

I met the love of my life( which I woulnd't have if I didnt go to a particular resturant)

My first house fell through (as I sit in a house that is triple the size and much more our taste.. I thank GOD all the time that happened)

I cant have children as of yet (so I was blessed with the most wonderful puppy I could have ever asked for.. Only got her to fill the void at first)

All of this plays a role in the big picture. This is my view.. It just makes so much sense to me..

Do you believe it? Or are you sick and tired of the saying?

I am fine w/ it when I am saying it about my own life, but when others say it to me when I am going through bad times I hate and resent it. It's like all my pain, hurt, and disappointment is expected to instantly wash away upon hearing of those words. Makes me angry sometimes.

Incidently, I heard it from DH last night

Completely, 100% agree! Each time something in my life happened which I thought was bad...it lead to something MUCH better.

So absolutely!

I hate the saying. I'm a much bigger fan of "It is what it is".

I think we can learn a lot from the things that happen to us in our life, but that lesson wasn't the cause of what happened.

Re: Everything happens for a reason....

I believe it completely, and have experienced it!

I was once let go from a waitressing job and than that same week my internship offered me more days to work. I met my DH around this time and if I was waitressing we would have never been able to hang out on the weekends/weeknights and I may have missed out on dating and falling in love with him.

Re: Everything happens for a reason....

I do believe in this. Not so much in the way of punishment or karma (like if someone gets fired from his/her job and it’s looked at as happening because this person “had it coming” or “karma’s a b*tch”) but more like you can choose how to see things and you have control over your perspective. And I think the immediate “reason” something happened isn’t always clear right away. Sometimes people can learn something from a situation, or grow from it. I don’t think this applies to each and every situation, but I try to think of this when something bad or unfortunate happens because its comforting and it gives me a chance to introspect and grow from the situation, rather than dwell on it or linger in a pity party (which I can totally get caught up in sometimes!) I think of it as a chance to look at something from another perspective.

Re: Everything happens for a reason....

I also believe that bad things come in waves, at least for me. Like several family members dying at the same time, and just bad luck. I think sometime when your down, you attract more bad things.

I've never read the secret, but i heard this teaches you to always think positively even when things are bad and things will naturally get better. Anyone ever read it?

Re: Everything happens for a reason....

of course everything happens for a reason.

but there is the reality of that saying (everything happens for a reason, even if that reason is your fault and you don't want to know it Chat Icon )

and the trite "consolatory" version

"it's ok, everything happens for a reason" (ie, this was good for you even if you don't see it yet)

sometimes you get dumped by a partner b/c they think you suck. and maybe you did. and THAT is the reason it happened. the fact that you will fidn someone knew is the silver lining of that reason...and of course, why everything happened Chat Icon Chat Icon

needless to say, I HATE this saying used in that consolatory way.

I am terrible.

If it's true...then someone explain our last year to me....

Mom has cancer
My baby died
DH's GM is seriously ill
Family dog died
I have IF
and that doesn't even count the small insignificant stuff...

I've always tried to be a good person. I give blood, I donate to causes, I work for charities.
What is the reasoning?

I don't believe it....things happen and that's all there is to it.
There's no rhyme or reason to it.

The little applauding guy should not be smiling, but what you said is exactly the reason I'm sick of and resent the saying. Of course we as humans may be able to rationalize or put a gloss on some things in retospect, BUT to say that everything happens for some ordered reason is cruel when you look at things like that...and virtually everyone I know can compile a list like yours. Chat Icon No rhyme; no reason. Just good folks suffering. It's nice to think hat when things work out for someone, there's purpose & sene to it, but you have to conveniently forget about cruel inexplicable things like what you've said to adopt the belief wholesale, and after the things i"ve seen on here & in real life, I can't.

Re: Everything happens for a reason....

I believe it, but sometimes I find it hard when some people I know have horrible things happen to them.

For me two prime examples stand out:

I met my DH at a party that I was not going to attend because I was not feeling that great, but went anyway at the last minute. I remember even saying to myself, heh..you never know I might meet my future husband.

Also, I have been at my current job almost 5 years and I love it, but I only got it because of what happened at my last job. I was fed up with my last boss and I had come across some emails that he wrote pretty nasty stuff about me. Usually I would have given two weeks notice, but after seeing what was said about me and what had gone on I had had it. So i resigned on the spot and left at noon that day. I went home and started looking for a job and applied for this job the same day. ANd a month later I got it.

So yes, i do believe it.

Re: Everything happens for a reason....

I think a lot of people 'want' to believe things happen for a reason, rather than it being just a random set of events.
People want to think that bad luck or tragedy can somehow be explained by saying 'it was meant to be' or 'it happened for a reason', when in reality its just a horrible event that happened for no reason other than it just did. Life is like that.. sh!t happens.
its how you deal with it that makes you who you are.

Personally, i don't like the cliche sayings, but thats just me.
I think when people say, "oh if i had never had this bad thing happen to me, then i wouldn't have had this other thing happen to me which was good". Call me cynical, but i call that coincidence, not 'fate'.
But hey, if it makes you feel better to think it was 'fate' then who am i to say any different?

I don't buy it. Some things have no reason IMO. It's just the way life is, bad and good things happen, no rhyme or reason.

I believe it - even in tragic cases.

When I was little I had a 2 year old cousin who passed away from a congenital liver disease. She needed a liver transplant. Around that time there were several small children with the same disease. Now, that disease is rarely deadly as they can now transplant a small part of the parent's liver. It is horribly tragic that she passed away and I cannot even imagine the pain that my aunt must feel everyday.

We were talking with her recently and she feels that my cousin's death and the death of those other children helped in the medical advances they were able to make. Unfortunately for her, they were made too late but so much of medicine is trial and error. Chat Icon

Re: Everything happens for a reason....

Life is hard and sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to anything but I do believe that there are lessons in everything and its not the situation but how you come out of it that changes things. So yes I believe that saying.

My dad has cancer
My mom has a rare immune disease
My FIl has cancer

and yes I still believe. Chat Icon
