Re: Family vacation to Maine - is Bar Harbor worth the extra 3+ hr drive?
I'd probably skip Bar Harbor. While DH and I looooved it, I think there's enough to do in Southern Maine with a toddler. Maybe wait till your DS is a little older, then make the trip. That said, if you do decide to go, I don't think you'll regret it.

I would not bother. Esp with a little one. We did not like Bar Harbor so maybe that is why I am bias
There is so much to do in Southern Maine, I would just stay there.
We love Portland. It is beautiful!!!!
We took DS to the Train Museum there and the Train Ride and he loved it.
I would def go back there. It is so clean (as is most of Maine) and everyone is really friendly.
How far is Portland from Ogunquit? We are looking for some new day trips for this summer.

Bar Harbor is beautiful. I love the hiking trails up there and kayaking. I don't know if you'd really want to hike with a toddler although we've gone with people who have done that. We haven't been back there since DS was born, partly b/c of the long ride and partly b/c I don't think it's as great of a place for young children. Personally, I'd wait to go until your DS is a little older.

I think it is about a 1.5 hour drive.
We are leaning towards 1 night in Portland and then driving to the Oqunquit/York/Wells area.

Bar Harbor does sound wonderful but the activities don't sound too great for a 15m old toddler. We decided it is not worth the extra drive. DS hates being in his car seat for long periods of time.
We'll be sure to head up there once the kids are older.

If you go to Portland, you should make your way around the bay, it's a lovely walk and pretty too, right on the water. DH proposed to me there and it was lovely.
Also, if you guys go out to eat Espo's Trattoria on Congress St. is AMAZING!! Best food i have ever had in Portland!
