February Break (school)

Can they just get rid of it and end school a week earlier?

This school break is scaring me because there is nothing to do bc it’s so cold. Only thing to do is have indoor play dates and other irresponsible things. February is going to be even colder and everyone is going to be even more “covid fatigued” that I feel like they should just eliminate it.

Well as kids we had less to do and our parents survived Chat Icon Chat Icon

I do get it though when my kids were younger luckily they had winter camp but there is really not much for kids to do at that time of the year and it usually snows.

I always hated Feb break even before covid and said the same thing as you- just close school a week early.
We aren't big winter activity people
Even this Christmas break is awfully boring for my DD

Re: February Break (school)

I wish they would do this.

We usually go away during that break, but now it's going to be especially depressing to have to take off work just to sit home and do nothing.

Re: February Break (school)

Everyone is asking me if I'm taking some days off during my DD's winter break and I'm like- for what? To sit in the house like I do every day anyway but use a vacation day for it this time?
No thanks, I'll keep working. At least it gives me something to do.

Re: February Break (school)

Jersey has a week off in Nov and I was dreading it. We did originally have plans, but nothing. Ugh!

Now this winter break is killing me. Home with the kids while they do video games and if the weather is somewhat decent like yesterday I make them go outside.
So much fun working and being on a conf call while I hear my 11 year old scream to his friends bc they have some Fortnite tournament. For some reason they all have to be on Facetime with the phone pointing to the ceiling and one is louder than the next. Even down in the basement I can hear him. Chat Icon

I hate Feb break too!! even this break is a little LONG, especially this year....

I just want DD to be back at school. I think she would prefer to be back at school. They should be spending more time in school now, so if things ever can go back to normal in times of traveling and normal life activities, the kids could get like May and June or September off instead.

Warmer breaks are always easier.

Mine hasn't been in school since the first week of December and isn't going back until the second week of January. Even when she goes, she's there 2 hours a day.

So winter break is just like any other day of tv and no learning while DH and I work.

ETA I'm counting down the days until summer because then she goes to camp and I can work uninterrupted. That's what my life has come to. Looking forward to uninterrupted work.

I could agree to that! Usually I work in a school but I took the year off for child care leave. Last two years we went to visit my in laws in Florida over February break. This year nothing. My DH is taking off so I don't have to be with my older son and the baby alone and no school. This week is bad enough. My son has ADHD and loves the routine of school so being home is just a lot of fighting with him.

Are you working from home and need the help with them during the day?

February Break (school)

I hate February break and find is so unnecessary, as both a parent and a teacher. I don't think any other states still do this, I know CT just has a four day weekend. Other states only have the Monday. Why do kids need another week off when they have long vacations in December and April, and then two months off. Silly.

I’m so annoyed - usually we are only off Monday and Tuesday that week but this year, before Covid, they decided to start school before Labor Day and give us the full week off.

We love Feb break. Even if we are just home. Maybe because my kids are older they look forward to having a week of down time and sleeping in before the mayhem of March-June of all the sports (school and club) and end of year testing (regents, APs etc) as well as math and science fairs and Nyssma etc. The February break is the calm before the storm!

We're in NJ now, our district doesn't have a February break. We finish the year earlier than we did on the island, we're done the second week in June here.

Re: February Break (school)

I love winter break but we usually go away. Not this year, but I'll still take the lazy days of sleeping in and not following a schedule.

The timing definitely isn't ideal when spring break is early, though. I remember one year it started March twenty something and it felt so soon because we had just had a week four weeks prior. Then April - June was killer.

I like what Jersey does. The beginning of the year is stressful and by mid November everyone needs a break. I wouldn't mind if they did a long weekend for President's Day and then a full week in November.

He just screamed "BRO YOU'RE A HACKER!" so many times and so loudly and I'm sure he woke a billion pour souls in east Asia who were trying to sleep.

I was undecorating outside yesterday and could hear mine yelling while playing. I said it sounds like you are being murdered. If the neighbors were out they would think he was being abused Chat Icon

LOL! It's ridiculous! All I hear is
Bro!
You're a Bot!
You're so sus!

LOL! Between Fortnite, Among Us, Rocket League and I think they are back to playing Roblox again bc it's something else to do.
I make them go outside the moment it's over 40 even if it's to walk the dog. For our sanity. LOL

I am a teacher and this is the worst school year ever. I need the mental break from teaching like a first year teacher again. February break is a total recharge for me.

February Break (school)

My son 100% need the breaks from school. It gives him a bit of normalcy knowing he will have a school break just like the snow day did. It’s important for the kids. We are both still working from home and DH will be forever. I do not take off while school is out as I just don’t need to. As an only child he has learned to occupy himself for good periods of time. And our work life allows us to get our work done as we see fit during the day.
