Fighting Traffic Ticket - Worth it?
I got a ticket for driving in the HOV lane. I never drive on the expressway and this tired mom of 3, didn't notice the left lane automatically became HOV until it was too late. Got a $350 ticket. Is it worth it to fight? Would have to go to Village of North Hills Court. Is it going to be knocked down by $100 or down to zero? If only $100, I don't think its worth my time.
How long do you have to sit in court? If it will take 3-4 hours, I think I would rather mail a check.
Does anyone have any experiences to share?
I just don't want to pay, since it was truly a mistake and I couldn't change lanes quick enough until it was too late.
Thanks

Yes. Fight it. My boss did and it was basically dismissed.

Doesn't hurt to try and fight it. Especially if you have a clean record.
ETA: Do you get points on your license of this? If so, I would definitely try and fight it.

If you get there early and sign in, you'll be one of the first cases. Worth a shot, as $350 is a lot of money. The PO didn't seem to care about your excuse, but the judge might. Depends who is sitting that day and their mood!

The cop believed me but he said there was nothing he can do! He told me to go to court and it would be dropped to a parking ticket. It may only be $250. I can't tell if the surcharge is built in already. I think they make the wording confusing so people pay extra! If it's really $250 I will just pay. Just frustrating because I was driving for work! Hopefully my boss feels bad and tells me to expense it!!! Ha ha!!

Right, but I don't drive on the LIE. I take the LIRR to work. I don't live by the Expressway either.
I don't take the LIE either and now about it. It's common knowledge.

I'm going to have to agree. I mean aren't there signs and the diamond symbol notifying you of that? If you are THAT tired, then wouldn't driving be kind of dangerous?

They always have the option not to give a ticket.

Yep. There are signs everywhere about it too. I would just pay it and chalk it up to an expensive mistake you will never make again. It wouldn't be worth my time to try to fight it.

Damn! $350!! Even though it's a lot of money, I would just pay it and lesson learned. Sucks though.

I have to agree. When I get tix and I'm 100% in the wrong I don't fight them. I suck it up and try not to make the same stupid mistake again.
THe one an only time I have ever fought a tix was a parking tix where the town never shoveled out meters and you couldn't get to it.
But this....There are HOV signs all over. So many because my son screams Diamond every time he sees one. I really don't see how you could miss it. And if you were that tired to miss it driving itself is a danger.

Re: Fighting Traffic Ticket - Worth it?
See, I feel like you're expected to fight tickets though I have very limited experience with this.
Last year I got one for running a stop sign (and I did stop because it was at a busy spot and I always have to make a full stop and wait) but I knew it would be the officer's word against mine and I didn't want to be bothered. It was the first ticket I'd gotten in 20 years.
I went to the town court to pay, handed the ticket to the officer doing the security checks, who handed it back to me and said, "You want to plead not guilty. Check here." So I did it and got a court date in the mail. I was too surprised to tell him I just wanted to pay it. Since I had a good record the town attorney knocked it down to 'parking on pavement' and I paid $175. It can't hurt to go to court.

Re: Fighting Traffic Ticket - Worth it?
Wow, tough crowd! When you get 4 hours of sleep (every single night), work 60 hours a week and have three kids under 4 with no family help you miss things.....like road signs! Just an overtired working mom who unfortunately had to drive due to a client emergency! I tend not to drive, but had no choice. I'm too tired wouldn't go over well at work!
So glad to be back on the LIRR today so I can get some well deserved rest!

Re: Fighting Traffic Ticket - Worth it?
I don't know specifically about this type of violation but I was able to avoid paying for a stop sign roll through. First delay your first appearance. My second appearance was rescheduled by the court. I was very lucky that at my third appearance the cop never showed up and my ticket was dismissed.

Wow, tough crowd!
Shocking for LIF, right?
Again, if you have a clean license it's worth it to try and get it knocked down. I had a speeding ticket knocked down to a parking ticket. No points, much cheaper and it doesn't show up on my license. Well worth it.
Yeah Yeah...I know I was guilty. So are a lot of criminals who still fight to get a lesser sentence

You don't need to explain yourself to anyone, we all make mistakes, right? Who are we to judge you.
I would try to fight it, you have nothing to lose. Good luck.
