Was from Jinglemommy: "If you mess up, he will have no idea whatever it is that you are doing is wrong."
I LOVE THAT PIECE OF ADVICE

Re: Finish this sentence.....The best parenting advice I ever got was...??
The best advice I ever got wasn't really advice. It was DH's best man telling me I was normal and my baby was normal after my first few days home with a newborn. I was having a breakdown (DS had gas and cried A LOT the first 2 weeks) and he came in with a 12 pack and saw me hysterical and told me it was all going to be fine and feeling that way was normal.
Best advice I ever GAVE (IMO lol) was not to feel like you have to listen to someone's advice. You know what's right for your baby....do it. Even if its not what everyone else does.

Re: Finish this sentence.....The best parenting advice I ever got was...??
While people kept telling me that letting DD sleep on me as a newborn would spoil her, a friend's husband said to enjoy it, because they don't want to sleep like that for very long. Sure enough, by 2.5 months old, DD couldn't get comfortable sleeping on me anymore and that was the end of it. I'm glad I cherished every moment of it.

Let a newborn sleep wherever you can get them to sleep and don't worry about bad habits forming until later.
Trust your instincts.
This too shall pass.

I think the best advice is "what works for one, won't always work for the other."

Re: Finish this sentence.....The best parenting advice I ever got was...??
"The newborn phase doesn't last, and not everybody enjoys it."
I had a VERY hard time with DD as a newborn and she was a very easy one, but I was so tired/frustrated/stressed/exhausted that I thought it would never end. I felt like such a bad mommy for not feeling so happy/excited/over joyed about her that i would just cry and cry in the shower about what a bad mommy I was. Then a friend told me this and I finally felt normal. I knew I wasn't wrong in my feelings, but I also needed to know I wasn't alone. I think as new mommy''s there is soooooooooo much pressure to think and feel a certain way and if you feel different you are shunned. Loving her was never an issue, but but feeling like I had to always look/act/feel like a perfect mommy was hard. The truth is as a newborn it's hard. You are so tired and so much has changed that sometimes you do think...what the helll is going on, and that is PERFECTLY NORMAL even if nobody else will admit it!

They are only this young once.. enjoy, savor, absorb every single moment.
Give up anything and everything to make this time special because you will always regret it if you don't.
Remember, having kids means a life change. Don't expect your life to be 'normal' but instead 'special'.

Re: Finish this sentence.....The best parenting advice I ever got was...??
When I was going through my lowest of lows and thinking Johnny may have autism, and doing nothing but sitting here crying over the future I wasn't sure he would have, I was told
"He is not a label. He is JOHNNY. Just JOHNNY. He is the funny, adorable, smart and wonderful boy now that he was at birth and will always be. Stop projecting. Treat him how he should be treated...as your little 2 year old that you love more than anything. His future isn't written and anything is possible"
His pediatrician at the time told me this advice (I may have botched some of the words but they have ALWAYS stuck with me since the day I suspected something was wrong). She was a wonderful person who encouraged me to try to just enjoy him instead of focusing on the "what ifs". It seriously has made all the difference in my life

Re: Finish this sentence.....The best parenting advice I ever got was...??
I'm not a mom yet (will be in t-minus 7 1/2 weeks!), but one of my friends put it to me this way, after I was having a how-the-hell-will-I-do-this moment. She said that children are meant to survive their parents and their parenting missteps and walk out of the house at age 18. It really made me laugh and set my mind at ease.

Re: Finish this sentence.....The best parenting advice I ever got was...??
Don't always be looking for the next thing you can't wait for them to be doing. I remember when dd was a newborn sitting there saying "I can't wait till she..." and would fill in the blank with anything and everything a baby could do in the future (sits, crawls, smiles, laughs). I realized I was wishing away all of the great every day stuff waiting for the next big thing. Now any time I say "I can't wait til she..." does whatever I make myself stop and live in and enjoy the moment.
