Fleeing NY
Makes you wonder if NY represents what the country will look like under such a left wing progressive government. We aren’t even that progressive here in NY and people are fleeing. Anyone else scared for the country as a whole?
We keep considering A move when our kids are out of school but you wonder if NY will be the “new normal”

Re: Fleeing NY
Scared for what? Serious question. And if you're worried about the country as a whole, I am FAR more worried about some of these half a$$ backwards states where they seem to be stuck in a bygone era of hate, racism and ignorance. NY is the least of my worries.
To add to that, Democrats have existed as long as the Republicans and amazingly enough, the country has survived for over 200 years despite whatever political party is in power. There is literally nothing wrong with a progressive way of thought or governing, that is how change happens. One might argue that conservatives are more the problem as they keep the country rooted in a backwards way of thought. It can go both ways. I will be honest, until Trump I really never heard such constant vitriol against either party, somehow we all managed to coexist without all the insanity. I am SO tired of the manufactured fear and drama over either party, it's really gotten ridiculous. There can be a happy medium between both parties which is likely where most people fall anyway.
Furthermore, there isn't a mass exodus from NY. Realistically, for every person that leaves there are thousands more that want to stay. Some people absolutely love NY, high cost of living and all. Some people want something different in life so they leave, some people (such as myself) are just sick of the congestion and traffic. Ultimately, NY is not in any danger of becoming a ghost town. People will leave, others will come and life will march on.
If you want to move, I highly recommend that you do. There are so many other beautiful and interesting places to live. I don't regret moving twice, it's a good life experience.

I don't know if people are leaving NY because we are a democratic state. Maybe the state tax is so high because we are a blue state but I don't know if that is true. I think people are leaving NY because of poor job growth especially upstate which had been industrial. The cost of living is high downstate but for a large group - their incomes reflect that. Not many areas of the country have a typical salary of a public school teacher can reach in to the 6 figures. If you go to other parts of the country like the bible belt or the rust belt - you aren't going to get the same type of social climate that you have in downstate NY.

NYC will continue to be the financial capital of the world and a mecca for fashion, tech, culture, etc. There is no other city like it. I wish people would leave LI in droves! Maybe all the construction for luxury apartments and 55+ communities would stop.

Ok you are more concerned with racism and hate while I am more concerned with my day to day life of my family. We are taxed beyond belief and have nothing to show for it. How could anyone be ok with their children some day paying over $15k in property taxes and than being taxed to death in their paycheck and just about everything they buy. Have you bought a house recently? Fees fees fees. Nys taxes. Etc... do you drive to work every day....our roads are comparable to a third world country between the crater sized potholes and overgrown weeds. The city....you wouldn’t catch me walking around at night, majority of people don’t feel safe there anymore. We pay fees to enjoy the parks and beaches that our tax money also goes to. Ask anyone who has started their own business what the biggest obstacle was....the town governments. We had a shop in my town try to open for over two years and the town wouldn’t let them over a parking lot entrance that’s been there forever. They never opened. I can keep going.

This is a tad dramatic. It's not all doom and gloom.
Yes, taxes on the island are high but high taxes are most definitely not unique to NY. While I think a nice life can be made elsewhere, realize that every state, town and city will have their issues as well. Having lower tax burdens comes with its own set of issues. There is no perfect place to live, you just have to figure out what's best for your family and financial well being and find then find the place that suits you best.
If you really hate NY, leave........... and I don't mean that in a snarky way. Don't wait for the perfect moment to move because it'll never come. Just take the leap and if you leave before your kids finish school I promise that they will adjust. Don't suffer in NY if you hate it that much.
ETA - I didn't leave for financial reasons, my DH and I were really tired of the congestion and traffic. We wanted more land, space and nature which was something LI couldn't offer. Glad we took the leap.

Most places don’t have $15,000 taxes for less than an acre of land and smaller homes. Yes there are places like CA but I have a friend who moved down south. Nice quiet area, nice sized home, acre of land and pay close to $1,000 a year. Yes many jobs pay less but not all and it all works out with their lower home prices and taxes. Higher paying jobs (which are NY salaries) do much better and have a better quality of life.
I think many are held back because of children or family and can’t just get up and move with transfers of jobs. They need to find a decent paying job, medical they can afford, etc. I for one have things holding me back but still do research for the future. I am sure many are doing the same.

I understand moving and cost of living, I've left NY twice. It's not an easy decision to leave and it can take time to figure out but if it's really important to you, you'll find a way.

I agree. I went from saying I’d never move to completely being open to it, but have circumstances that keep me here for a bit. Living here is becoming more stressful and aggravating than it’s worth.

The construction is crazy. It’s hard to drive past any piece of vacant land without a sign advertising it for sale or announcing “luxury living” or a medical center coming soon.
Plus people are living longer. All the development makes me concerned for the environment too.

ITA and I think for the majority of people here in NY they will eventually. It will become too expensive as people are getting older and retiring.

I have a good friend who did not have to move for financial reasons, sold their house in 1 day and 2 months later left. People are sick of the control here in NY and how other places you get more for your money.
Which actually shows how eager some people are to move into NY, or at least to certain areas. When houses sell within days, and there are bidding wars, that means there are at least some people that really want to move into those areas.

It seems they are moving from the city to LI as more are working remote and it is cheaper to buy a house than rent in the city.

I agree. I went from saying I’d never move to completely being open to it, but have circumstances that keep me here for a bit. Living here is becoming more stressful and aggravating than it’s worth.
I think many feel this way.
It’s become a welfare state. If you make any type of living wage it’s going to taxes.
Yep and other states do not have state tax which also helps with your paycheck.
The island will only be for the rich as they are taxing everyone out. You never get ahead here as if you do get a raise, it goes straight to every bill that is raised.

Scared for what? Serious question. And if you're worried about the country as a whole, I am FAR more worried about some of these half a$$ backwards states where they seem to be stuck in a bygone era of hate, racism and ignorance. NY is the least of my worries.
There are many areas across the country that are for the wealthy, this isn't unique to LI. As long as people continue to stay, buy homes and pay taxes nothing will change.

Fleeing NY
People in the city are still leaving in droves and they are coming out to the suburbs which is why prices are high and inventory is low on LI in Westchester, NJ etc.
The city is a hot mess and will not likely go back to what it was for a very long time. Even before COVID there was a decline in quality of life. I work in the Financial District and most of the companies still have almost all their workers remote and it's not likely that all of them will come back. A good majority of folks I work with moved out of state permanently and will continue working remote..a NY salary goes really far in a red state. Leftist progressive policies specifically the taxation absolutely ruins things and as liberal as some people claim to be once that starts affecting the pocket book they will make choices to protect themselves and a lot of times that involves fleeing for a red state. I have seen it numerous times over the years and more so now.
Almost everyone we know who lives on the island or the city is ready to leave. Taxes kill you and really make it unaffordable. Between the state taxes taken out of our checks and our property taxes we pay an astronomical amount and it's crazy. It's super congested, roadways are crap, traffic everywhere. The plan for us is to leave in a few years however depending on our situation we may accelerate that which is a shame because I do love where we live, the proximity to the city (at least the nicer, safer version from a few years ago) but we have to do what's best for our family.

It’s become a welfare state. If you make any type of living wage it’s going to taxes. One of the many unfortunate thing is is that since New York is so flush with cash, it tends to give more than a chair to the rest of the country. I also wanted to make a point about California and property taxes. They have proposition 19 which minimize the tax burden and is directly proportional to your house purchase price

Re: Fleeing NY
OP, I know from your other posts that you are very conservative so perhaps NY is not for you.
Like Hofstra said, I don't say that to be snarky. I say that because you are obviously not happy with the direction of the state.
I am a progressive and there are plenty of things I would change but there are also many things I love about living here.
I agree real estate taxes are high, but some of the costs mentioned by the OP are not even close to worth leaving over. I don't buy houses near often enough to worry about a few hundred in fees in such a transaction. I know plenty of people who have opened businesses without issue.
I wouldn't want to live in a backwards, homophobic, racist area where many are concerned only with their guns, wages are low, and there is little to no diversity.
I'm not saying the rest of the country is like that - obviously that's not true. But there is enough of that out there that I want to dodge it carefully.
If we left, it would be because of taxes. I'm not sure what we are going to do but a lot will depend on where DS settles because I would never want to be far from him and, hopefully, whatever family he creates. Our houses will be paid off around the time he graduates college so I feel like it will be logical to make a move then. But we are here until around that time.

Unfortunately there are racists and homophobic people in all states. Even the most progressive. So i wouldn't base where I live on that.

Definitely wouldn't base an entire move on that but there is undoubtedly some areas of this country that are a level of backwards that would be hard for a NY'er to really understand. It would definitely be hard for me to assimilate into certain places in this country ,I'm too much of a Yankee at heart.
