Unfortunately there are racists and homophobic people in all states. Even the most progressive. So i wouldn't base where I live on that.
Definitely wouldn't base an entire move on that but there is undoubtedly some areas of this country that are a level of backwards that would be hard for a NY'er to really understand. It would definitely be hard for me to assimilate into certain places in this country ,I'm too much of a Yankee at heart.
Yes, exactly.
It's about the culture. Sure we have racists and homophobes here, but in smaller and quieter numbers. While obviously incidents occur anywhere, in a progressive area there is at least a social cost incurred when people make that behavior public, so they often don't.
We have a "live and let live" vibe here that I place a very high value on. I am not afraid to walk around alone during daylight wearing my BLM shirt. There are parts of the country where I wouldn't dream of doing that because I would get harassed, heckled, or worse.
There are other cultural aspects that correlate with those environments that also turn me off. I don't want to live in some crazy open carry state with lunatic gun culture, or a place with huge billboards that quote the Bible even though most of the people within a fifty mile radius wouldn't lift a finger to do anything Jesus would have done.
Sometimes when COL is cheap, there are reasons why.

Exactly and some of the most racists things that happened to me when I was younger, happened in good old LI. One of the reason why I chose NJ over LI when I left the city.

When people move from LI they are all so much happier. People are friendlier, they aren’t trying to keep up with the Jones’.
Newsday just had an article about racist real estate agencies.

Have you ever lived in a lower COL area? It’s not always so bad as people think it is.

I have when we moved down to FL after college. Definitely wasn't the area for me but of course there are many lower COL areas that are amazing. It really depends what you're looking for and where you land.

I wouldn't want to live in a backwards, homophobic, racist area where many are concerned only with their guns, wages are low, and there is little to no diversity.
Me neither, that’s why we left LI.
But you know what? We moved to an area that’s blue as the sky. They have these nice little “hate has no home here”signs on their lawns. There were celebrations in the streets when it was announced Biden won. They wear quadruple masks and test their kids for COVID for fun in their spare time. They’re picture perfect dems.
They especially love the “diversity” of the neighborhood. They are all about the non-white kids who live in run down apartments across town with their parents who work 3 jobs and still don’t have enough. Those non-white kids are vital to their liberal existence until someone proposes merging elementary schools. And someone proposes offering lower cost options for extracurricular activities. Then there’s major upheaval. Not in their backyard. They don’t give a sh!t about diversity and they certainly don’t give a sh!t about those kids.
There are racist dbags everywhere, on both ends of the political spectrum.

I am picturing a specific, foul place like a part of FL that DH wanted to buy a house in where there are Bible billboards everywhere, guns hanging out of people’s pants, and multiple people shouting the N word. Literally. That is what I want to avoid. I am not claiming LI is some utopia at all

I have a good friend who did not have to move for financial reasons, sold their house in 1 day and 2 months later left. People are sick of the control here in NY and how other places you get more for your money.
Which actually shows how eager some people are to move into NY, or at least to certain areas. When houses sell within days, and there are bidding wars, that means there are at least some people that really want to move into those areas.
A majority of these people are coming from the city.

I get what your saying but racism is still racism regardless of how in your face they are about it, it’s still hate.
As a minority, I get more nervous when racism is hidden in “liberal” pocket areas where you get blindsided when you hear a comment or are personally effected. Atleast in those areas of FL or WV, what you see is what you get.
Like the saying.. “better the Devil you know, then the Devil you don’t.”
Eta: Ofcourse I won’t want to live in these areas, I just want to know what they are up front

Looking at the voting map - most of the areas are red in NY - except the areas with higher populations.

Yep and there are so many bidding wars out on the island. Out friends who sold ins day, also sold for over a million. That’s how bad they want to get out.
Also, who wants to pay $7,000 for rent when you can get a house much cheaper and not have to commute.

Bidding wars are happening all over the place, it's a total sellers market. People are getting WAY over asking and homes are selling before they ever formally hit the market because inventory is so low everywhere.

Fleeing NY
So is every red state backwards and racist? Not sure if that’s what people are saying here. I find the northeast very blue yet very segregated in the schools, neighborhoods etc. I guess that comes down to income and that probably goes back to the systemic racism that this country has.

Yes, performative is the perfect word to describe it.
Two people in my neighborhood on LI had confederate flags in front of their houses. I’m certainly not saying that’s reflective of the entirety of LI but it exists.
But I do see what you’re saying, especially when you’re raising children. As an adult I could maybe argue that at least what you see is what you get, vs the situation in my current neighborhood. But kids can’t make that distinction and that’s why ultimately I’m glad we moved DD out of that environment.

When my husband talks about moving off LI when we retire, I hyperventilate. I can't imagine living anywhere else.
Maybe its the fear of the unknown, I don't know.
I like our four seasons. I like living close to the water but near to the city. We have the majority of our family nearby also.
Taxes and traffic stink but no place is perfect.
