Flexible companies?
I feel like I've been posting so much :)
Is there any way to find companies that are flexible and allow for working from home? I am looking for a new job preferably on Long Island; but I would do a NYC company if I had the option of working from home. Trying to see if there is a good way to narrow down which companies offer that?

Re: Flexible companies?
My BIL's girlfriend is a head hunter in NYC. There are days where she will ask and can WFH.
ETA she doesn't WFH the entire week though.

Re: Flexible companies?
You could look for a remote job. But other than that, I think it's really hard to ask up front about working from home. I think it also depends how often you expect to WFH.

Re: Flexible companies?
I think larger corporations tend to permit working from home and other flexible arrangements more than small, family owned companies.
There are published lists on the top family friendly companies to work (Working Mother magazine used to publish one every year, but not sure if that magazine still exists), and it listed different categories, such as allows telecommuting, flextime, etc.
I think large companies care more about public image, so family-friendliness, workplace diversity (e.g., having women in key positions) all factor into their policies.
My DH works for a large bank and they are very open to people working from home and even encourage it (more than he does). Large accounting firms and law firms are similar.
When I practiced law, a lot of my clients were large pharmaceutical companies (Pfizer, Novartis, J & J). They were all very open to working from home arrangements for their employees.

Re: Flexible companies?
For me, in health care, I feel you have to often earn a role like this.
Also what is your reasoning for working from home?
I found I rarely used this perk, because having a kid and a husband, it's impossible to get a lot of work done.
I know similar colleagues who still had to use a sitter.
I found I was much more productive in a structured work environment.
I opted to take one day a week from home and I got the bulk of my work done in the office the other days.
Home days were for sending out quick emails and items that weren't super urgent.

Flexible companies?
Thanks!! It's funny-I work for a very large company and we're not allowed to work from home ever-unless it's a snow storm and those in the outer boroughs/LI can't make it in.
Maybe WFM; isn't the answer exactly-what I need is a flexible company. I currently work until 5:30 and it's frowned upon when I get up and leave at 5:30. So what I really need is a job that ends at 5 and I can go home at 5 LOL! I'm also trying to shorten my commute into NYC; so I figured perhaps a company here in the city that would allow me to work from home a few days would be the next best thing to a job on long island?

Re: Flexible companies?
Do you have any connections through the NSLIJ health system?
I don't work from home, but it's very family friendly in the sense that my hours are set and any overtime is discouraged.
I also have no stress or drama here at all really.
It's impossible to get in though without knowing anyone...

Flexible companies?
I'm trying to get connected through LIJ> I was a birthday party last weekend and one of the mom's works there we just became friends on facebook. She's n the clinical office I'm gonna see if there is anyone she knows. Is it a matter of knowing anyone in the particular department you want to work in...or just in general?

Re: Flexible companies?
Try FlexJobs.com and VirtualVocations.com. Both are subscription sites but are fairly inexpensive and often offer codes. I'd normally never recommend paying for job listings but there are too many WAH scams out there. These are legit and screened. I don't have a VV account but I have heard of many of the companies on FlexJobs.
