I only use Stat Health since I have no doctor and yes they test for everything. Same with my DD's ped. But the ped will not prescribe meds for flu due to the side effects in children.
I go to City MD and wait for them to ask me if I'd like to be tested for bubonic plague. You go in there for a broken toe and leave knowing you don't have strep, flu, mono, anthrax poisoning and smallpox.
So true.

I read yesterday that it works like this
You get the flu You are laying in bed with the flu, all the fluids settle in your chest You get pneumonia Penumonia turns into Sepsis (bacteria infection in your body) Then you die
A counselor at Ward Melville just died last week from the flu. I've read about quite a few kids who were otherwise healthy dying from the flu. Athletic kids who just contracted it, got sepsis and died. Scary stuff.
I also don't understand why doctors aren't testing anyone for it that comes in with a fever right now. Like someone else said, it's not invasive. It's a swab in the nose.
Reading about healthy people dying from flu is a lot different than actually knowing specifically what their health status was. And thats always private. Thats my only argument here.

But to be honest, even if you test positive for it, there isn't much they can do. You kind of just need to ride it out and treat the symptoms. So knowing it is definitely flu vs. another flu like virus really doesn't do you much good. Dh ecen took the Tamiflu when he waa diagnosed 2 years ago and it did nothing
Yea but I would want to know if my child or myself had the flu so we can be quarantined. You should know if you have the flu so you aren’t walking around infecting other people.
I agree but if you are sick enough to think you might have flu and see a dr, to me that means you should still quarantine yourself and not go to school and work. Flu isn't the only thing that spreads. One time I had a virus so bad I thought I might die. I had 104 fever. Doc thought it was flu for sure. My swab came back negative. Truth be told I was sicker with that non flu illness than I was when I had actual flu. So yeah, even though I didn't have the flu ,I needed to be quarantined. And to be honest I had no choice anyway, I was too sick to go anywhere.
Yes but you knew you had a virus, this doctor didn’t test this kid and the mom can think he is ok once the fever breaks and send him to school. Last year I had flu a and b, I went to the doctors because I thought I had a cold - no fever and couldn’t get my asthma under control. She tested for the flu as a precaution and said she didn’t think I had. Guess what I did - not just one but both strains, and everyone was shocked. I would’ve went to work the next day, I was literally going there for the strong cough syrup
So doctors should be testing everyone, regardless I want to know if my child has the flu. I also believe in taking medicine. I’d also be pissed if I had to go back to the doctors for a second time to find out.
Idk, a bad cough to me means that you should stay home. The common cold is still a virus, why is that ok to give to other people? It baffles my mind. If you needed strong cough syrup, stay home and don't give that cough to other people.
Staying home for a cold is unrealistic. I've had a cold for a month. No one can take a month off work for a cold. Also, coughs linger for weeks on end.
Don’t even bother.. it’s just a point to spin what I said around to make it seem like it’s a waste of time to get tested for the flu during flu season. Which I think is one of the most absurd things. Idk maybe my doctors are weird but they always test for flu and strep.
Ha, mine too. And I would report any doctor who refused to give me either of those tests at the height of freaking flu season.
Personally, I'd also take tamiflu if I tested positive because I like to live on the edge. So I'd need to know.
Me too and my son has taken it before. So far we lived to tell about it. All meds have side effects but to me that's a separate issue from thinking a flu test is irrelevant. I can't keep up with what we are debating here.

Did the Tamiful help? DH took it exactly as prescribed, within a day of showing symptoms and took the full dose for the full time and it did nada. Zip. Zilch. He was just as sick, if not sicker, than DD and I who didn't take it. I'm not afraid of the side effects per say, but I don't like taking a drug that is pricey (I have great insurance and most drugs are $5 and this cost us $45) and doesn't even really do anything.

Yup. A lot of these people have compromised immune systems from issues that may not be public info.

Re: Flu Season - Healthy people dying
I had the flu a few years ago and it was so awful. I was down for about 2 weeks and was just miserable. I never want to do that again. I always vaccinate myself and DD for the flu now. DH doesn't get it because he's lazy.
ETA: DD was sick last week with what we now know was coxsackie, but the rash hadn't come out yet when I took her to the doctor for her high fever and mild cold symptoms. They swabbed for the flu even though her symptoms didn't quite match up.

Flu Season - Healthy people dying
I was at PM Pediatrics with DD the other night because I thought she either had flu or strep. They swabbed for strep without question. But they said they only swab for flu if they are going to treat it which they do not do. I asked them to swab for flu and they did. I wouldn't say I demanded it but I had to strongly ask for it. It really surprised me that they wouldn't do it as part of their normal procedure for someone that was showing symptoms.

The only thing the vax is really good for is reducing the length of the flu. The likelihood your son would have still gotten it is high but he just would have had it for less time and not as bad symptoms. Don't feel bad. You made a judgment call that you thought was best.

I just had Tamiflu. I honestly don't know that it helped at all. If it did, I didn't notice! And if it did, I can't imagine what I would have been like without it!
I had a whole discussion with my son's pediatrician about it the other day. He said that the data shows that Tamiflu only shortens the flu by 12 hours. It does not prevent hospitalization, death or symptoms (other than cutting the symptoms by 12 hours). He told me that he does not prescribe Tamiflu because the data does not support the need to prescibe an overly expensive drug that is not showing a true benefit. I thought that was pretty interesting.

See this is what I tend to believe too. And from what I have read, it really only shortens the duration by half a day. My ped also will not prescribe it. Then DH took it because he hates being sick and will do ANYTHING to try to make himself better, and it did absolute squat for him. I also think that sometimes meds have a placebo effect... you THINK you are doing something, taking a med to make it all better, so it works in a placebo kind of way. The flu is a virus. There really are no cures for a virus.

I have been second guessing my decision! I hate it. I'm home with my ds all day and we don't go anywhere! But dd is in school and I have been freaking out over it. I wanted to take her out and home school her for a couple weeks! I keep fighting with myself on if I should just take her for the shot but I don't know what the right thing is! We've been taking our vitamins and elderberry though.
Same! I regret not doing it for both kids...I have always been against it and I changed my this year. Next season I will have us all do it.

After I had it, I took my kids. They just got their shots 2 weeks ago. There is still something like 12 weeks of flu season left so take them now. Its not too late.

This. I always get for my kids - but my husband and I never get it. Not that I am against it really, just laziness I guess. Now I feel like I should just go get one - is CVS still giving them out I wonder?

They are. The year I got the flu it was April... when it's a really bad flu season it can last well into spring.

You can still get it this year though, no? Why not give it now?
This. I always get for my kids - but my husband and I never get it. Not that I am against it really, just laziness I guess. Now I feel like I should just go get one - is CVS still giving them out I wonder?
They are. The year I got the flu it was April... when it's a really bad flu season it can last well into spring.
Oh yes! We all missed Easter 2 years ago because we all had the flu in mid April.

Not saying you can’t get it in April regardless, because technically you can get it any time of year... but two years ago the flu peaked really late in the season. My DS and I got a terrible case in March that year.

That is funny! I do remember the doctor telling DH when he was diagnosed that they had SO many cases in March and April that year. So there is something to it. So strange

Yes! That year at my DS’s well checkup at 2 1/2 his ped wanted him to get the flu shot still. It was the end of February and I was like...... Isn’t the flu season coming to an end though? She said it’s starting late and they saw their first few cases recently for the season. Well... 2 weeks later, we both had the flu.To be fair, I gave him the shot the following year and we both got it anyway. Point being though..... I’m really things taper down in the next few weeks since we’ve definitely peaked early this year.
I checked out the charts for other years and it CAN peak twice but that’s rare and tends to be when flu A and B aren’t peaking at the same time, which isn’t the case now.

Flu Season - Healthy people dying
Does anyone know why doctors would be hesitant to test for the flu? It's not like it costs them anything, I would think they'd actually make money by billing for the test.
When I took DD in for flu-like symptoms they said it was up to me if I wanted to test for the flu since we discussed Tamiflu and both agreed that we wouldn't give it. I passed on the test because I wasn't going to do anything differently if she was positive.

I mean the only reason that I can think of that they said it was "up to you" is that maybe some people have really high copays on lab tests so for something like this, where you both agreed you wouldn't be treating it with Tamiflu, maybe they figured you might not want to spend the money on a copay to test for it?

Same here! My doctor didn't even think I had the flu but he said there were so many cases popping up that he'd test me to be safe. Lo and behold- the flu!

However with all these healthy people dying from fly - that 10 year old CT boy :(...its making me nuts and wondering if I made the right decision.
Thoughts?
I'm not sure if this boy had any preexisting conditions, but he had the flu and his parents still took him for a 7 hr car ride to a hockey tournament. I think besides fluids, the first thing they tell you is rest, rest, rest.
Where did you get that information? I believe he was diagnosed with the flu while he was already at the hockey tournament and died later that weekend after developing pneumonia in addition to the flu. We obviously don’t know anyone’s medical history, but it seems that he was otherwise healthy before contracting the flu.
I don’t know if it’s true that the vaccine can lessen the symptoms, but having had the flu twice, I have no problem getting the shot and hoping that it either protects me and my family from the flu or reduces the symptoms. I’m very nervous having a child in daycare who’s still too young to get the shot, especially since we were just notified that someone in another room at the center tested positive for the flu.
