Look I see it this way. *I* don't buy into the flu shot at all. HOWEVER, if you feel that the flu shot provides ANY sort of protection in anyway, then take the shot. Even if its only 10% effective this year vs the imaginary 100% it should be then you can rest assured at least 10% of the time you'll be fine, which is of course better than 0%.

I don't buy into the hype at all. I don't get it, she doesn't get it. She doesn't get it BECAUSE I don't. Not because I feel her age has anything to do with it. I find the whole flu thing to be a fear factor and immunity killing disease pushed by media.

but *IF* I was going to get the shot for myself, then she'd be getting it to. Why? Because something's better than nothing.

I haven't heard this! However, i get my twns the flu shot and DH and I opt not to get it! They had both doses already and DS was diagnosed with the flu today! A co-worker of mine had the flu shot and 1 month later was diagnosed with the flu.

Some years they do a better job than others at predicting which strains are going to be prevalent and including those in the vaccine. I haven't heard anything in particular about this year, but basically ANY year you could be one of the unlucky ones and run into a strain of influenza that isn't covered by the shot.

We personally are a flu-shot-receiving family. Do I expect 100% protection? No. But I figure if I can lessen the odds, then I'm satisfied.

Re: Flu shot this year...anyone hear this?

There was an article in our paper recently that said most doctors/nurses aren't getting the flu shots. More specifically the ones giving us the flu shot.

So that generally speaking, you are getting the flu from those giving you a shot so you DONT get the flu.

Can't find the article itself but this is close. Older but close.

I don't know about the strength of this year's vaccine, but I will say I got the flu this year and after that experience, I have no hesitation about getting my kids vaccinated.

I don't know if anyone here has gotten the flu lately but I was miserable for 5 days and if the shot can up the chances of my kids avoiding it, then I am all for it.

haven't heard that, I did get it this time around because I am pregnant with DD #2. I was afraid with DD #1 but was lectured from my OB that I NEED to get it.

Re: Flu shot this year...anyone hear this?

It depends..they have to predict in advance which strain of the flu is most likely and that is the strain used in flu vaccines. IMO, its still worth it. In my case, I am around newborns and toddlers everyday. I don't want to infect anyone or bring it home to my little ones.

Yup. There are lots of common colds running around this year... which are viruses. No real "flu" yet... but something may come later on in the season. There was a particularly nasty virus that came through that had all my coworkers coughing for MONTHS.

That being said: I get the flu shot every year. The benefits outweigh the risks. I can't take 5 days off from work (it would be my vacation time) and I can't afford to get my family sick.

Only 2 flu seasons ago, I watched a TOTALLY healthy, young coworker almost die from H1N1 (she worked with kids, was offered the vaccine & refused). We've all been traumatized from that & we all get immunized every year because of it.

Interesting article. My cousin is a nurse and my uncle a doctor in San Antonio and they tell me they get the shot every year and everyone they work with does as well. They got it this year.

Re: Flu shot this year...anyone hear this?

I am also a nurse, and most of us get flu shots as well as the doctors. I have been getting it yearly for 15 years, and have only gotten the flu twice. It's not 100% but in those 15 years being exposed to thousands of flu patients, I think getting the flu twice is not bad odds. And if you've ever had the flu, you know that it puts you down for the count for weeks. So to each his own who doesnT want the shot, but IMO why would you chance getting the flu if you could
Potentially avoid it?

Re: Flu shot this year...anyone hear this?

My pediatrician told me that the flu shot is 50 - 80% effective.

I never get a flu shot.

I currently have the flu.

Let me tell you, 50-80% is better than nothing, I would not wish the flu on ANYONE. It's AWFUL. I have been sick now for 5 days with no end in sight.

I will never skip a flu shot for my kids, and I will be getting myself vaccinated in the future.

I don't understand. "Immunity killing disease"? What does that mean? I am NOT trying to be snarky AT all, just don't understand this statement?

I read that it is only 50 percent effective this year, but since ds started nursery school I had both kids vaccinated. Dh and I have not yet but will when we go to the doc this month.
