Food donts
I know there are a million lists out there but since I asked my doctor for one and they didnt have one actually, which list did you use or better yet, if you can just add to mine, that would be awesome.
Thanks!!!
caffeine- I cut it out all together
cold cuts- heat if you eat. havent had at all
sugar subs- minimize or cut out. ive minimized
soda- ive pretty much cut it out- had it once or twice(caf free)
sugar- not too much. trying
eggs- no runny ones. did that.
sushi- nothing raw. one day, i had a cooked roll. i realllllly miss this!
salad dressings or anything made with raw eggs- doing this
cheeses made with unpasturized milk- ok
salad bars- try to stay away-ok
all meat- especially red- no pink- doing this
i know i am missing stuff???? peanuts?? hot dogs?? more stuff?

Re: Food donts
No sushi made with other sushi :( They use the same knives so if there's contamination, it would be on the "cooked" sushi as well. I miss this too.
No smoked salmon / lox unless it's cooked.
Hot dogs nitrate-free if possible (I do turkey franks but I don't eat beef).
No tuna steaks (because of mercury). Canned tuna is fine 1x a week.
Splenda is totally fine. Soda's fine too just limit the caffeine. (Ginger ale was a life saver for a little while until my m/s got much worse.)
You can have the caffeine equivalent of one can of soda or two small coffees a day if necessary unless your bp is really high.
Most of this is just recommendations. The only thing I got yelled at by my OB last pregnancy for was the tuna steak. But it was my anniversary and worth it.
Oh, no alcohol. Or smoking. Or drugs. Only tylenol for headaches, no advil. No decongestants.

Re: Food donts
I usually google a certain type of fish before I eat it to see if it low mercury...there's too many to list but just be careful about that!
Someone told me not to eat honey since it isn't pasteurized but I still put it on my yogurt a couple of times a week.
I heard the hot dog thing too...everything in moderation I think you can splurge on some things every once in a while if you have a craving, but try to stick to fresh foods!

Re: Food donts
my doctor said 1 or 2 cups of coffee per day is fine. She also said hot dogs and deli meats are fine. it's more of a worry if you're going someplace where unpasturized cheese touched the things you're eating.
She said i should not take additional vitamin supplements (ie: vitamin pills). She said that sometimes it negates the effects of other vitamins in the prenatals or has other weird effects.

other than tuna, you can eat just about any fish or seafood dish that you want
tuna just has too much mercury in it

Re: Food donts
I think swordfish is also high in mercury, but I'm not sure. I always ask the fishmonger at Whole Foods because they're very knowledgeable about it.
Last pregnancy I asked about shrimp and he said keep it to one serving a week also, but 5 or 6 times a month is ok.
Deli meats and cheeses that are packaged at a factory (not from the deli counter) are fine, too. That helped me a lot.
I'm not somewhere with great reputable delis anymore (I moved out of NY after I got married) so I don't have the "great deli" luxury. Although I like my deli sandwiches all melty-toasty anyway.
Oh, and don't forget 64 oz (+) of water a day!

Actually, there are some studies saying that eating too much peanut butter while pregnant can cause a peanut allergy in the child. I'm no doctor and I don't know much about it, but I kept it to a minimum... although I ate an enormous number of peanut m&ms with my first pregnancy.
I'd talk to your OB about that one and just follow whatever they tell you.

Re: Food donts
As far as fish, I read mahi mahi is a no no (too much mercury). Good to know if you're out to eat and it's on the menu!
My doc okayed one cup of coffee a day, no more than 8 oz. I only splurge for a grande from Starbucks once in a while (usually if I have a headache for some relief!). I also ventured into the coldcut world and had a ham & cheese on a hero, I think if I give in once in a blue moon it's not so bad, as long as I don't eat it every week! I think about all the junk my mom probably ate while pregnant that would now be considered a no-no and I think I turned out fine

Re: Food donts
yup, getting my water. i figured that since caffeine was fairly easy to give up for me as opposed to some other things on the list, i would just cut it out totally. its also helping me to drink more water since im not allowing myself any iced tea or soda basically. ill have orange juice as my other drink.
as for peanuts, i heard about this allergy thing where you baby might me at higher risk for a peanut allergy if you consume them during pregnancy. its not a huge deal for me but a pbj sandwich would be nice once in a blue.
thanks on the fish..so that includes cooked shellfish? sorry for all the questions

Re: Food donts
if anyone is curious about the fish thing beyond tuna, the American Pregnancy Association has a little list -- found myself googling this more than once these past nine months!

Re: Food donts
Cooked fish is limited to 6oz per week... And tuna in a can is actually a sort of no no because you really have no idea how much mercury is in it cause theres no way to know where its coming from... Its one of those things where once in a blue moon wont kill you, but not something I would personally (just my feelings) feel comfortable eating once a week or even once a month...
Whenever Im not sure about something I want to eat, I google it to confirm...

Re: Food donts
I thought the deli meat was better than the packaged because at least that moves where you dont know about the packaged meats.
i gave up the no cold cuts for a pastrami sandwich and theres no turning back for me at least for that.

I mean the kind of deli meat packaged at a commercial plant. Those have to be fully cooked before sealed into the packaging. At least that's what my doctor told me.
I'm sure your sandwich was delicious!
I wonder if you could go somewhere like Katz's where all the meat is cooked there and the turnover is huge and get a sandwich... I'm coming up to NY in a few weeks for a visit and boy is that tempting!
As a side note, I can't get half-sour pickles where I live now. I miss them terribly. So preggo cliche!

My friend was pregnant with twins. She said she ate peanuts/peanut butter and one twin came out with a peanut allergy and one did not. Take it for what it's worth.

Honestly I think everything in moderation is fine.
My OB gave me a list and there were a few types of fish on there to avoid, but I don't eat them anyway.
I still eat mayonnaise and salad dressing
I heat deli meat if I have it
I have salmon once a week
I'm avoiding caffeine and artificial sweeteners and trying to keep sugar down.
My doc said splenda is okay but I just don't want to have it
Never heard of the soft serve ice cream thing...

Re: Food donts
Why not soft serve ice cream? why not mayo?
As for the fish, the bigger the fish, the higher the concentration of merucry.. so swordfish, mackerel, etc... higher mercury bc they're bigger fish.

I only said mayo/salad dressing because they have egg yolk in them which I read somewhere raw egg is a no-no. I stll eat it though. Gotta live my life

Honestly I think everything in moderation is fine.
This. My doc said not to drive myself crazy and completely cut everything out. I have had a hot dog, peanut butter, cold cuts here and there and eggs over medium on occasion.
The only thing he said to be weary of was the amount of caffeine and the unpasteurized cheeses.

I ate peanut butter almost every day with my first pregnancy and often ate it while BFing. DS doesn't have any food allergies. I'm eating it all the time again and I'm not too worried. I would limit it if there's a family history of nut allergies though.
