I thought that companies paid unemployment insurance?
Isn't that why when a person applies for unemployment the powers that be contact the employer to verify that the person was terminated, laid off etc and didn't quit their job or wasn't fired for incompetence etc?
Anyway, I always thought of taxes as the gov't taking our money and redistributing it as they saw fit. I think one of Obama's biggest verbal mistakes was using the term "spread the wealth." It's gotten a lot of people mad and though I don't think he meant to, pit classes against each other.
Sigh.
Also, someone wrote earlier that welfare is long term while unemployment is short term. I disagree.
companies pay into unemployment benefits, but they also come from the Gov't.
Unemployment is only for 6 months, people can easily be on welfare their whole lives. they just have to keep applying for it, but the benefits won't end if they can prove they qualify for it. that is what I meant.

there's a big difference between being unemployed b/c you got laid off due to the economy than to being unemployed b/c you're lazy and choose not to work and abuse the system... umm yea - exactly
I think these are two separate issues-you all are referring to people on welfare-which is an age old argument. Obama has repeatedly talked about the "working poor": NOT people who don't work and abuse WIC and food stamps.

Posted by smdl That was my very basic question about unemployment.
It is taking away from everyone paycheck. Hard earned money.
But, you have to have worked and contributed in order to be able to collect unemployment. You DON'T have to contribute a thing to collect from socialist programs. I think using unemployment as an example is like comparing apples and oranges.
What person in what campaign has said that lazy people would be getting any money or be rewarded for it?
Read the last question on page 5. Barack's own page It says in black and white that he will be taking from those that make money to pay for those that don't. Note- there's no specification of having to prove WHY you dont have income... so those that don't work "just because" will still be covered- That's where it says that people will be rewarded.
Honestly, this is a bit simplistic to say that. More of a scare tactic!
Aren't we talking about his income tax plan? This is a link to his healthcare plan
