For all those who condone Puppy Mills/Pet Stores...
This is how the parents are treated and why we need to stop this from continuing...
According to Roy Gross, Chief of the Suffolk SPCA, on Saturday July 7, 2007, his agents responded to the home of Daniel R. Friedman at 59 Coventry Avenue, Mastic, NY. Gross said the officers were invited by Mr. Friedman to inspect the premises but they were at first driven back by the smell of ammonia from urine. Chief Gross said that this is one of the worst cases of animal abuse he has seen and when his officers entered the upstairs portion of the home where Mr. Friedman lived, they found Lhasa Apsos, Poodles, and Cocker Spaniels jammed into cages in a small room, no bigger than a walk-in closet. The room had no ventilation, no air conditioning, no lights, the window was closed and the feces in the cages were reported to be "thick." The Mastic Fire Department was called to the scene to ventilate the premises before officers could enter and remove the animals. Even after the house was ventilated, SPCA Officers were required to wear personal protective equipment so they could enter and remove the dogs.
SPCA Veterinarian Dr. Charles Greco arrived at the scene to examine the dogs and he found several to have severe corneal ulcers, severe gum disease, hot spots and 2 of the females dogs are in full-term pregnancy.

This is tragic. It upsets me so much. I can't even watch Animal Police on Animal Planet. I hate to see this. Absolutely heartbreaking.

This story is sad beyond words, as is the case of abused animals everywhere.

It's sad that that people view animals as "just a source of income" How could someone not see that they are treating them cruelly. The punishment should fit the crime. It should mimmick the crime in my oppinion.

So terrible!!!!
In some of the typical puppy mills states, the rescued mill moms are in even worse shape than what is described here--and this is pretty terrible as it is.

They don't, and that's why you don't want to buy from pet stores...this is the way the animals are treated.
My point here is... Whenever these posts come up about petstores the people who bought their dog at the petstore get defensive. It's not about the puppy at the petstore. Of course he/she deserves a home (and will get one even if it goes to a shelter). But, it's not fair that every time someone buys a dog at a store they encourage these backyard breeders to abuse the animals they have.

It's not like that at all as far as the moms being taken care of.
Has anyone else seen the floowing video that went around on a lot of the rescue websites? It was a video of a livestock auction. I think it was in the Amish country. The auctioneer was holding up a dog and said, "not a tooth in her mouth but who cares, that's not where she breeds!"

Very well said, Gerty. Bella is a puppy mill rescue and it breaks my heart to imagine what she went through and what all these poor souls deal with...

Re: For all those who condone Puppy Mills/Pet Stores...
I am so glad that you ladies feel the way I do.
This story has made me so upset. I am so happy that the dogs were finally rescued.
It seems like everyone I know is going to these pet shops lately even when I tell them how terrible they are. I have spent endless nights looking for reputable breeders/shelter pages of specific breeds so my friends and family won't go back to these shops, but of course since they may have to wait more than a day they go back and get the puppy at the shop.
I really wish something could be done to close these puppy shops around here. I can't even tell you how many horror stories I have heard about local ones lately.
I even changed vets, when I found out my vet became the local pet stores "vet of choice" because I felt that I would not bring my dog to a place that is supporting these terrible conditions and animal abuse.

Re: For all those who condone Puppy Mills/Pet Stores...
and to make us a little sadder, here is a story I received in an email:
Soon after "Baby" arrived at a puppy mill, her vocal cords were cut with scissors, without any anesthetic, so she couldn't bark. The puppy mill owner didn't want to be disturbed. Then, she was confined in a cramped cage with a chicken wire floor, so the owner did not have to clean it. Later, she broke her leg, and it was left untreated for years. Ultimately, the leg had to be amputated. When the poor dog could no longer produce any more litters, she was taken from the cage to be killed. She escaped that fate when a kind person came to her rescue. That’s why we know Baby’s story.
Baby was one of the few lucky ones. Today, thousands of helpless dogs remain trapped in puppy mills with life sentences of unspeakable cruelty.

I can relate 110%. I also do tons of research for people and try to tell them about PMs but many times it falls on uninterested ears. But if I stop just one pet shop dog from being bought, then I have kept a PM dog from having to produce 3 more puppies.....
I also left a vet b/c they were the vet of choice for Shake-a-paw.
