and to make us a little sadder, here is a story I received in an email:
Soon after "Baby" arrived at a puppy mill, her vocal cords were cut with scissors, without any anesthetic, so she couldn't bark. The puppy mill owner didn't want to be disturbed. Then, she was confined in a cramped cage with a chicken wire floor, so the owner did not have to clean it. Later, she broke her leg, and it was left untreated for years. Ultimately, the leg had to be amputated. When the poor dog could no longer produce any more litters, she was taken from the cage to be killed. She escaped that fate when a kind person came to her rescue. That’s why we know Baby’s story.
Baby was one of the few lucky ones. Today, thousands of helpless dogs remain trapped in puppy mills with life sentences of unspeakable cruelty.
I just got that e-mail and was going to post it, but thought that people might think I'm even crazier.
well, now they can think I am crazy

I also left a vet b/c they were the vet of choice for Shake-a-paw.
I bet it was the same vet, because they give his card out at Shake-a-paw when you buy a new puppy. I just can't believe a vet of all people would feel comfortable leaving their card at a place like that.
That email that was posted brings tears to my eyes.

How do you find out if your vet is involved with puppy stores? I love my vet but would be devastated if I found out he was.

I found out by someone that bought a dog there telling me they were given his card for a free well visit paid by shake-a-paw. They had known that I went to him.

you would think they would at least take care of the moms- since she is carrying their $$$$
They don't, and that's why you don't want to buy from pet stores...this is the way the animals are treated.
My point here is... Whenever these posts come up about petstores the people who bought their dog at the petstore get defensive. It's not about the puppy at the petstore. Of course he/she deserves a home (and will get one even if it goes to a shelter). But, it's not fair that every time someone buys a dog at a store they encourage these backyard breeders to abuse the animals they have.
Not that i was getting defensive, I just never knew that this went on with pet stores, I was getting defensive at a comment that was thrown at me. I cant believe this happens with pet stores

How do you find out if your vet is involved with puppy stores? I love my vet but would be devastated if I found out he was. I was randomly chatting with a girl who just got a new "poo" mix. I of course asked all the taboo questions, found out she bought him at S-A-P, and asked if the vet had checked the pup out yet. She said yes. I asked if it was a reputable Vet, she said yes & told me the name. I was using them (very highly recommended) and asked her where she learned about them, since it was no where near where she lived. She told me that she got a free vet visit there with the purchase of her puppy
I stopped going there, as did my mom, sister & MIL. Between us we had 9 dogs and 3 cats. I wrote them to let them know why they lost all our business, but never heard from them again.

I just want you and anyone else who has gotten their dog at a pet store to understand that... This is not about the animal you have now. If you didn't know about pet stores before you got your pet that is TOTALLY understandable. This is about education. Now that you know this happens you and others may not run to a pet store for a pet the next time. All I want to do is educate people for the future. My first dog ( a Dobie) was from a pet store...almost all of us have made the mistake. But as we educate ourselves maybe we can prevent this trend from continuing and help these poor dogs in the mills.

You hit the nail on the head, Gerty. I think a lot of times on this board, people post negative things about byb/puppy mills/pet stores for educational purposes, people get defensive about having bought from pet stores and a vicious cycle develops. It's not about those who bought without knowing. It's not about dogs in pet store not deserving a good home. They do. But the point is, if you educate yourself on the topic (or if you are like me and knew nothing of all this until this site), you learn that by buying from puppy mills, you add to the problem. If we stop buying from puppy stores, we will end the needless suffering of countless animals.

Re: For all those who condone Puppy Mills/Pet Stores...
Thank you for educating me. I didnt know that much about this.
My dogs were from a reputable breeder. I didnt go to a puppy store for many reasons, but now I am even more glad that I did not.
Thanks for the eye opener that I can politely share with others.

Thank you so much for posting this. I learned so much on this board. And honestly, I was so scared that my "dirty little secret" would be revealed.
I purchased Brutus at Shake a Paw- he was very sick and we fell in love with him - we had to sign a waiver since we took him home while he was still battling kennel cough. He is the love of my life and i DO NOT REGRET getting him.
But now I am more informed and I hope people will not judge me. i DID do research ( i thought i did) and a friend gave me this info that SAP was the only pet store that DIDN'T support puppy mills. . .i thought I WAS being responsible.
Anyway, when FH and I are ready for our second Boston we are going to research better ways to get him/her!

It's totally not your fault or anyone else's who buys from a pet store without knowing. I think the fact that you have learned about puppy mills and will never again support them says a lot about you, kudos!

Really horrible. The post about the auction in PA, I never heard things like that.
I think the pet stores feed into our societies need for instant gratification. A family can be at the mall and the little girl can go oh mommy look a puppy and they can go in and buy one and have no clue about the dog and what they are getting themselves into.

You are right and on top of that they offer financing, etc. so it's a total impulse thing. There's not much we can do about that except picket these places. The only thing that can be done is try to educate people and hope that eventually the masses can put an end to this process.
