Formula debate today..see if you can help

OK..let me set the scenario:

You fill a bottle for a feeding to 5 oz. DC drinks 3 of those, leaving 2 oz left in the bottle..and falls asleep for two hours.

1.) What do you do with the remaining 2 oz?

2.) How do you clean bottles if you fed at 10:00 am, and will feed again at 1pm? Do you just rinse the bottle? or..Do you use a completely new bottle?

depending on room temp if its cool..keep theformula put it in the fridge and use again later.

as far as cleaning bottles. if i used it at 10am. i either completely clean it to reuse OR i get a new bottle for the 1pm feed

Re: Formula debate today..see if you can help

1. i put it back in the fridge and feed at next feeding. if it's left OUT - i toss it.

2. i have a nice amount of bottles - once we made a bottle decision - we got many of them - so i would throw it in the sink to soak and i clean at night (using a new bottle for the 1pm feeding).

never re-use a bottle that has only been rinsed.

Re: Formula debate today..see if you can help

I personally used a clean bottle every time, never just rinsed and reused. I also threw out the formula if it wasn't finished because I was told it was bad to reuse it.

Re: Formula debate today..see if you can help

1. I would throw out the formula. I believe the can states to throw out any formula not used within 1 hour of the feeding.

2. I would use a new bottle or totally clean the bottle. Formula isn't good after being out for 2 hours, and any residue left in the bottle would make me nervous.

1.) The remaining 2 oz. go back in the fridge, and that bottle starts the next feeding.

2.) I set up all my bottles for the day before I go to bed the night before, so once a bottle is done, it gets washed & put away.

1. Technically, with regard to bacteria, you are supposed to throw the 2oz out.

2. I do not run any bottles through the dishwasher. I wash with dishsoap and dry. 2 minutes and its done. I only actually own 4 bottles (all samples) and they are more than sufficient

Re: Formula debate today..see if you can help

1. Throw out the 2 oz. Because of bacteria you are not supposed to use any formula left out after an hour.

2. I use a clean bottle for each feeding.

Yeap...if they don't drink the 2oz, throw it out. you are not suppose to reheat bottles and once open..you have about an 1 or so to use it.. Most will say 1-2 hours you want to discard it.

From a chill if its already prepared to heated for use, back to fridge is a big no no.

We wash every bottle every night. They are prepared for the next 2 days.

Even though she does not drink the other 2 oz, any bacteria transfered to the bottle will go back into the fridge with it. This holds true with food. Don't feed them with spoon from the container. If you are not gonna finish the whole thing, it needs to be poured into a bowl, then you can store it back. If you are feeding from spoon from original container...that food is exposed to bacteria and being out longer.

Re: Formula debate today..see if you can help

if its been sitting out that long i toss it. If it was right after the feeding and put back in the fridge i would use it again that day.

as for the bottles, i have like 10 dr. browns bottles that are all filled and ready to use for the day. so i use it, put it in the sink and get another one out of the fridge for the next feeding.

Re: Formula debate today..see if you can help

1. I throw it out after 1-1.5 hours, I don't put back in fridge ever.

2. I make the bottles for the day the night before, so I just use the next one and wash them as I have a chance.

- I put it in the fridge as soon as she's done eating and re-use (we do not heat Ann's bottles so most likely it is still pretty chilled)

I don't really get the rinsing question ... but I'm not a rinse/re-user of anything anyway (DH on the other hand will rinse a glass and leave it on the counter for his next beverage Chat Icon ). I would wash the used bottle or use a new, clean bottle.

1. Throw out the remaining, I use Enfamil and it says once they start drinking it it's only good for 1 hour.

2. I use clean bottles every time.

If the bottle wasn't previously warmed, I would put it in the fridge, but toss it after an hour. I go by the throw out after an hour once they drink from the bottle rule.

I always clean each bottle after each use.

Re: Formula debate today..see if you can help

I wait about 15 minutes after she falls asleep and then I cap the bottle and store it in the fridge. Then I just reheat the same bottle.

For the bottles, I dont know if you mean about leftovers or just bottles in general. I have 8 bottles that I try to keep clean at all times. I wash them in extremely hot, soapy water and then thorughly rinse. At the end of the day I put them in the microwave sterilizer.

Re: Formula debate today..see if you can help

1. I would definitely throw away the remaining 2 ounces. After 1 hour, you are supposed to throw it away, bacteria are present and multiply. I couldn't risk DS' health.

2. Definitely a completely clean bottle! Rinsing is not enough. If there are a limited number of bottles, I would make sure to thoroughly wash the 10AM bottle asap so it's dry for 1 PM.

Hope you win your debate Chat Icon
