Nope. Kept him rear facing until 21 months, just recently turned him around because his legs were squished facing rear.

Nope, DS is 14.5 months old and still rear facing.

My Ped said they moved it to 2. The longer they're rear facing the safer they are.

Other - the new recommendations did not come out until well after DS was 2. He went forward facing at 1. DS has really long legs and from 8 months to a year it was really hard to get him into the car seat. DD is 10 months old and I will keep her rear facing until I no longer can do so. Right now she is not complaining about being rear facing.

Re: Forward facing carseat by 12 months - Yes or No?

the reason I ask --

Im not even considering switching until after her first bday (1 month) but she is really uncomfortable in her infant seat (peg perego primo viaggio SIP). It has these "wings" for lack of a better word that are on either side of DD's head and with her helmet she has NO room to turn her head.

We tried to put her convertible seat in rearfacing (combi AIR) but it doesnt really recline enough so her head flops when she falls asleep and she is just miserable.

i don't know what to do. we can buy another convertible carseat that reclines better in the rearfacing positon but money is so tight right now Chat Icon

I voted other. DS was turned around by his 1st bday (over 2 years ago). He was squished!

DD on the other hand is a peanut. She is 15 months (a little over 13 adjusted) and not even 20lbs yet.
She is still comfy in her infant carrier. I most likely will be waiting til she's 2, simply because she's a peanut.
If she outgrows her infant carrier, Ill look for a new seat (bigger) that can be rear facing.

Re: Forward facing carseat by 12 months - Yes or No?

My oldest is 6 and my baby is 3. I was told at their one year well-child check ups by my pediatrician to turn them forward facing. So on their birthdays, they were all switched.

Can you check out the convertible seats at Walmart? I think the ladies on here really like the Graco ComfortSport. Keep in mind that even if she was forward facing, she wouldn't recline, so her head would flop forward anyway Chat Icon

Re: Forward facing carseat by 12 months - Yes or No?

I don't care who recommends what... she's staying rear facing for as long as possible. At least until 2.

If I were you, I'd return the convertible car seat that you have and get a different one. We have the britax roundabout for DH's car and the Graco MyRide65 in mine and DD loves both! Her head never slumps forward in either of them.

We turned DD at 14 months, but the recommendation was only for 12 months at the time so I thought I was doing greatChat Icon

For DS, we will wait as long as possible, at least 18 months I hope.

ugh - i know Chat Icon the added weight of the helmet doesnt help.

we're gonna tough it out as long as possible with the infant seat. i just hate that she's uncomfortable and the hour long commutes dont help, she gets so fussy Chat Icon

ETA -- im going to look at walmart/target. maybe ill check the sell/trade/swap thread

thanks LB Chat Icon

Re: Forward facing carseat by 12 months - Yes or No?

I switched DD at 13 months. She was 24 lbs at her 12 month check up. This was when the recomendation was 20 lbs and 1 year.

We'll see how things go with DS. when his knees are hitting his chest (which DD was pretty much doing) I will switch him. He is aleady 14 lbs at 6 weeks.

DD is still rear facing at 14 months.

We plan to keep her that way as close to 2 years as possible. Chat Icon

I"m keeping him rear facing as long as possible. The only problem I can see is that he is really tall.

I agree--the height/size thing is what I really don't understand. I see that 2 years is a recommendation, and my doctor said that they base that on the average height/weight of a 2-year old...Well, my DS was over that at 12 months, so how is turning him at 12 months, at the same height/weight most of the DC on here will be at 2, is any more dangerous than someone with a smaller DC waiting until 2? I mean, we could pick 3 or 4 years out of the air, but they base these years on the average 50% percentile of DC.

My DC are 19.5 months and still rear facing.
I think you should look at a different convertible seat - the seat actually reclines less forward facing, so your problem might be even worse if you turn it.

from what I've read, its not just about size. Its also about age. Its not until they get older that their bodies/bones can handle the impact. I'll see if I can find the post by carsafetychris...

Val, I don't know much about the parameters of her helmet (how long she has to wear it vs. time off) but is it possible to take it off when you're in the car? At least to alleviate that issue? Or is that a necessary time since she's putting pressure on her head?

I get the maturation part, I really do, but just as I got my period at 8 years old while others were 16, we all mature at different rates, KWIM?

I would never argue that people should change them earlier; I just feel that I wouldn't accept any recommendations as the Holy Grail since all babies are individual in their size and maturation. My dr. had us change to milk at 10 months since DS was so large and flourishing, but I would never advise that for everyone, KWIM?

Re: Forward facing carseat by 12 months - Yes or No?

he's still rearfacing at this point (12.5 mos) in a large convertible seat (up to 65 lbs).

In my car, the front passenger seat is not usable with the convertible seat rear-facing. The front seat needs to be pushed all the way to the front so the convertible can recline all the way. We don't have this problem in DH's car.

If we turn him anytime soon, it'll be in my car only. He'll remain rear-facing in DH's car

I voted No, DD is tall though and already squished in the seat but she will remain that way for a while longer!
