ugh - i know Chat Icon the added weight of the helmet doesnt help.

Val, I don't know much about the parameters of her helmet (how long she has to wear it vs. time off) but is it possible to take it off when you're in the car? At least to alleviate that issue? Or is that a necessary time since she's putting pressure on her head?

it's supposed to be on 23hours/day (only comes off for baths, aka time for both Sophia and the helmet to be cleaned Chat Icon )

ive thought about taking it off in the car but that's one of the times she really needs it -- like you said, when she's putting pressure on the back

maybe I'll just pony up and buy another one, the best rearfacing/reclining convertible I can find

id bring back the other one but we tossed the box/reciept a long time ago

I"m keeping him rear facing as long as possible. The only problem I can see is that he is really tall.

I agree--the height/size thing is what I really don't understand. I see that 2 years is a recommendation, and my doctor said that they base that on the average height/weight of a 2-year old...Well, my DS was over that at 12 months, so how is turning him at 12 months, at the same height/weight most of the DC on here will be at 2, is any more dangerous than someone with a smaller DC waiting until 2? I mean, we could pick 3 or 4 years out of the air, but they base these years on the average 50% percentile of DC.

from what I've read, its not just about size. Its also about age. Its not until they get older that their bodies/bones can handle the impact. I'll see if I can find the post by carsafetychris...

I get the maturation part, I really do, but just as I got my period at 8 years old while others were 16, we all mature at different rates, KWIM?

I would never argue that people should change them earlier; I just feel that I wouldn't accept any recommendations as the Holy Grail since all babies are individual in their size and maturation. My dr. had us change to milk at 10 months since DS was so large and flourishing, but I would never advise that for everyone, KWIM?

yup, I get what you're saying. And you're right- bones do form at different ages for different people. As mentioned below - ossification finishes between 3 and 6yrs, so for some its 3, for some its 6. But its not ever 1yr and its not dependent on their size. Thats all I was try to say.

from a previous thread on this posted by tarrabelle99:
The reason for the recommendation of keeping children rear facing has to due with their necks. Not the muscle strength, but bone formation. It doesn't matter how large your child is, their bones don't finish developing any faster because they weigh more or are tall for their age. The vertebrae do not finish the ossification process until the child is about 3-6 years old

the reason I ask --

Im not even considering switching until after her first bday (1 month) but she is really uncomfortable in her infant seat (peg perego primo viaggio SIP). It has these "wings" for lack of a better word that are on either side of DD's head and with her helmet she has NO room to turn her head.

We tried to put her convertible seat in rearfacing (combi AIR) but it doesnt really recline enough so her head flops when she falls asleep and she is just miserable.

i don't know what to do. we can buy another convertible carseat that reclines better in the rearfacing positon but money is so tight right now Chat Icon

I'm confused... Combi doesn't make a Convertible seat named the air. They make the Kobuk AIR which is a non harness booster. They have the Zeus 360 turn and the Coccoro for convertibles.

If you have the Coccoro, you may just need to adjust the angle of the seat. It's a great seat with a natural recline so I'd be surprised if it was causing really bad head floppage. I'm not as familiar with the Zeus and how that one reclines since it has the turning base. Have you considered seeing a tech to have the install checked?

Some good seats for Extended rear facing (higher weight limits, more leg room, taller shells and higher harness slots), they range in price from $85 or so to about $300ish

Graco MyRide
Evenflo Triumph 65/Momentum 65
Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Advocate
Learning Curve/First Years True Fit
Safety 1st Complete Air/Avenue
Sunshine Kids Radian 65SL/80SL/XTSL

FWIW, I know many will come and disagree with me but the ComfortSport is not a good seat for extended rear facing since it only RF's to 30lbs and then FF to 40 and has a pretty short shell. For a few dollars more you can get a seat that will last much longer. The top harness slot on the CS is only 13.5" compared to the Marathon's is 17". If you have a child who is tall and long in the torso you're going to outgrow the CS quite quickly as compared to the other seats listed which have harness heights of around 16-18". (to measure torso length, have your child sit up against a wall and measure where their shoulders are)

To answer your question, DD is still RF at 2.5 years old and will remain that way until she outgrows her seat (which I don't see happening until at least 4 yrs old).

I am embarrased to say I didn't even know they changed the recommendation. I turned Paxton around at 1 year and he will remain there. Maybe if I had a smaller child I would consider it but at 17 months he weighs 32 lbs which is more than my almost three yr old.

I wouldn't be embarrassed about it, my mom didn't know either and she's a PED. As she said, they're always the last to be informed...crazy right? Even when the recall thing happened, she got an email 1 week after I told her, I knew from this board! That's reality for you though. Chat Icon

For the poll....DD is 12.5 months and she's still rear facing. I'll try and keep her that way as long as I can.

Can you check out the convertible seats at Walmart? I think the ladies on here really like the Graco ComfortSport. Keep in mind that even if she was forward facing, she wouldn't recline, so her head would flop forward anyway Chat Icon

ugh - i know Chat Icon the added weight of the helmet doesnt help.

we're gonna tough it out as long as possible with the infant seat. i just hate that she's uncomfortable and the hour long commutes dont help, she gets so fussy Chat Icon

ETA -- im going to look at walmart/target. maybe ill check the sell/trade/swap thread

thanks LB Chat Icon

did you try going to a car seat check place and seeing if they can adjust it better for you - they may know a trick or two

I wouldn't buy a whole new seat Chat Icon

I'd use the one you have - there are things you can do to make it recline and have it still up to safety standards.

Definitely consult the poster carseatsafety! and/or take your car/carseat to be inspected.

If you can swing it, look at the MyRide. It has deep sides and the recline naturally is great for kids with special needs. My friend's son was born with severe hydrocephalus (his head was the size of a 2yr old's at birth) and it has been the only seat that was able to accommodate his head size with no flopping (which would restrict his airway). I also know of another mom who's DD is on oxygen and she has found this to be the best seat for her DD since her DD's head doesn't flop forward.

We turned around my four year old soon after he was 1. I just switched the twins out of their infant seats and into forward facing seats this week, they are 15 months.

I am keeping my kids rear facing until the weight limit of their seat which is 35lbs. Declan is almost 31 though-not sure how fast they grow around this age. They are almost 21 months. I have actually considered getting teh MyRide 65 because it can rear face to 40 lbs

Re: Forward facing carseat by 12 months - Yes or No?

With DS, the recommendation at the time was 1 year and 20 pounds. We turned him forward facing at 15 months.

DD is now 8 months and the recommendation has changed. I plan on keeping her rear facing until 2. Had the recommendation been different with DS, he would have remained rear facing longer.

Years before the 2 year recommendations, we turned DC around at about 18-19 months. I've never been in a rush to move up to the next seat stage. DS was in a 5-point car seat until his 6th b-day, and DD will also.

Re: Forward facing carseat by 12 months - Yes or No?

I am a yes vote- DD started throwing up in the car when she was 13 mos rear-facing. After the 5th time we took it out to clean it, we put it forward facing and have not had a problem since.

Maybe its not reccomended but when you have your DC easily projectile vomitting gallons.... I figured it was better for her health than IF there was an accident

Both my boys were moved at 12-13 months and couldn't imagine them rear facing much longer than that but both were before all this recent info on staying until 2. If I had a third not sure what I would do....if it wasnt' law - not sure I would wait until 2 but when they look too squished? who knows, guess if that times comes I'd have some research to do and see what my seats do and if new seats are better at that time for keeping big kids backward so long.

DS was rear facing until he was almost 21 months. We had to move the car seat when DS#2 came along and we couldn't fit his seat comfortable rear facing anymore. I plan to leave DS#2 rear facing for as long as possible.

I will not be turning DD's carseat until she is at least a year and a half. She is a peanut so I might even wait longer.
