Found some interesting items in our new home...
So DH and I are gutting the entire second floor of our new home and we found some funny things the previous owners left behind...
-old palm from who knows which Palm Sunday -6 baseball cards from the 70's and 80's -a poster from Easter Seals advertising a fundraiser hosted by the Islanders from 1984 -tons of really old pennies -an address on a piece of looseleaf for someone in Mexico
Anyone else find any treasures???

Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...
When we remodeled I found an old picture of the previous owners from the 60's and a receipt for getting their fridge fixed. It was like $1.00 and it was weird seeing the 5 digit phone numbers they used back then

In one of my attics there is a 1960's life size Christmas Angel. Scared the cr@p out of us I asked the previous owners about it and she said it was there when she moved in and didn't want to remove it. It seemed like an angel was watching over the house. So we left it.

Do nail clippings count as "treasures"?

Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...
My attic held old blinds, a set of shower doors, empty suitcases and shoe boxes. Nothing of value.
Why in the heck would anyone shove old blinds and shower doors up a 4 x 4 hole in the ceiling instead of hauling them to the trash ?

Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...
There are glass jugs in the sand under the bathroom extension in the basement. It's a small space so there's no way I'm crawling in there to see what else is in it.
The previous owners left two things that have been passed down to each buyer since the house was built. A wooden handled shovel and a cement planting urn. We have to clean up both in order to use them and haven't yet in three years.
Otherwise, the house was pretty bare.

When i gutted my first house - i found a big surprise in behind the bathroom room ----- used razor blades
Apparantly in the 60's they used to have a slot on the wall where you just put the blades in when you were done with them

Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...
Previous owners left this Chandelier that I thought was ugly. Dirty and brass with crystals. SO I decided I was going to paint it black and wash it up. WELL it came out so nice!! While we were washing each crystal we realized they were WATERFORD!!! My mother nearly died because I had already painted the brass black ....heee oopsie. Im not sure if it still has value now that the brass part is ruined, the crystal is all in tact though. Now its hanging in my hallway and its beautiful!!

I wouldn't call them treasures, but we found an unused needle & crack pipe. Lots of the kids toys in the yard under the decking, toys under kitchen cabinets and toys under the stairs where the boiler used to be. We are still finding toys at this point and we are in the house for 2.5 years.

Yup...
a Playgirl magazine from 1971
A Oui magazine (French equiv of Playboy) from the same year.
Let's just say plastic surgery, waxing and airbrushing weren't popular back then

A beer can from 1950 when the house was built. A couple of pages of Newsday under the carpet (1996 OJ trial was the headlines)

Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...
An old pencil sharpener from the 80s - the ones we had in classrooms... it was mounted to their basement staircase - when we gutted the house DH threw it out. I specifically asked him not to, but he did.
An old oil can, looks like the one Dorothy used in the Wizard of Oz - we kept that.
A cement bird bath, if I ever have time I want to mosaic it.

Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...
Recently, when we removed a air vent cover, we found a Newsday page from the 1970's.
The real gem was when we bought our bedroom furniture and when I opened the drawer one day, out popped a letter to this ladies mistress talking about what she wanted to do to her etc It was quite descript and it belonged to and old lady!!
On the back of this love note is her shopping list

When we were moving out the stove to replace it, I found a pair of thong undies... LOL Either there was some kinky stuff going on in the kitchen or got pushed under somehow since the washer/dryer is close by...

Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...
-Old lace drapes -Non-working air conditioners -All the old paint that they ever used in the house -Toy trains that are worth a little money -A cigarette package and coffee cup lid under the stairs (my dh had to take the stairs apart) from when the house was built. -And on the rafter in the garage, a large torn up kite...that when we brought it down, it 'snowed' red and white plastic...EVERYWHERE!! -We also found electric cords that they ran throughout the house...thinking they were good enough as real wiring. -Oh, and there is a switch in our 1/2 bathroom right above our sink, that turns the landscaping lighting on around our deck. Took us about 3 weeks to figure what that switch did.

Can you picture you neighbors looking out and thinking, "what the heck are these new neighbors doing".

The only reason we figured it out...was bc DH went to the bathroom...and flicking the switch on and off and I was sitting on the couch looking out the window watching the deck lights go on and off. I asked him what he was doing in there....very hesitantly he said, "Um...playing with the light switch..." That's when we figured it out.

Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...
wow some of you found some pretty interesting stuff!
i did figure out that the people who lived here must have locked their dog up in the coat closet how horrible is that i figured it out because there was tons of dog hair in there, scratch marks on the inside of the door, and what looked like dried up food and crumbs on the floor and bottom of the walls....so they def had an animal in there...it's a huge coat closet - bigger than a cage - but still
there were tons of beads upstairs in the girls rooms - and glitter....and one girl must have been named Lily b/c it's carved in the bedroom door!
otherwise that was it...
