Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...

Just some old toe nail clippings and a used hemorrhoid cream tube behind the toilet.....

The previous homeowners were SLOBS and left so much CRAP laying around and hidden! Nothing of value of course.

Oh and a ton of little hairs ALL OVER the bathrooms... BARF!

And guess who had to clean it ALL?

So DH and I are gutting the entire second floor of our new home and we found some funny things the previous owners left behind...

-old palm from who knows which Palm Sunday
-6 baseball cards from the 70's and 80's
-a poster from Easter Seals advertising a fundraiser hosted by the Islanders from 1984
-tons of really old pennies
-an address on a piece of looseleaf for someone in Mexico

Anyone else find any treasures???

Haha im so funny with old stuff, I would send a piece of mail tot he address...hehe

a Christmas list from 1963 but it was the owners daughter listing what she was buying her family, which I thought was sweet. We found old razors behind the walls like someone else mentioned and a beer can behind the wall, so my husband left one when the wall went back up.

In one of my attics there is a 1960's life size Christmas Angel. Scared the cr@p out of us Chat Icon I asked the previous owners about it and she said it was there when she moved in and didn't want to remove it. It seemed like an angel was watching over the house. So we left it.

In my parents house they found a Cresh/manger and when they called the old owners who said the same thing, that it was there from before them. It was left to watch over the house. Well my parents still have it in the attic. We are Jewish.

A couch in the attic (no idea how it got there because it was way to big to fit through the space where the pull down stairs are)

A box in the closet with polaroids of the old owners - close-ups of their private areas Chat Icon

-Oh, and there is a switch in our 1/2 bathroom right above our sink, that turns the landscaping lighting on around our deck. Took us about 3 weeks to figure what that switch did.Chat Icon

The only reason we figured it out...was bc DH went to the bathroom...and flicking the switch on and off and I was sitting on the couch looking out the window watching the deck lights go on and off. I asked him what he was doing in there....very hesitantly he said, "Um...playing with the light switch..." That's when we figured it out.Chat Icon Chat Icon

That is too funny i really LOL'ed!

We are in our house 3 yrs this June and we still have 2 light switches we have no clue what they are for!

Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...

We found several interesting things. They had the owners' manuals for every single appliance, so that was nice. They had extras of all the floor tiles and some of the siding and things like that. Then, we found baseball cards from the late 1970s and early 1980s still in sheets, not cut. Then we found a huge catalog of yarmulkes. They were Jewish and so are we. We saw some humor in finding the huge catalog. There were also some small trinkets from their travels, souvenir shop type things. They had a good life here and that always makes me feel good.

Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...

wow some of these are insane!! pictures of private parts and Burt Reynolds, which one is worse! Chat Icon

my findings are definitely G-rated since we bought from an 80 yr old!! Chat Icon there were some random things left behind, a whole bag of yarn, a box of old blank holiday cards, a canister of all kinds of buttons, an empty box of Jameson ("to Jim, love Dot", the prior owner was widowed for 20 years, so that one almost made me cry!), some paintings of boats, a charicature drawing of the prior owner that one of her students did, and the sweetest drawing that her daughter apparently did in the attic that was tucked away. I liked finding things that made me feel some connection to the family we bought from, since they were here for 62 years!! Chat Icon

I swear its still up! Its right over the washer and dryer in the basement where they so graciously left it Chat Icon

When we redo our basement we plan to reframe it and put it right back up Chat Icon

ETA- the funniest thing is that these people were devout Catholics- we found palm leaves and prayer cards hidden everywhere when we gutted the house- and then there is that!!!

Lisa, there is no way I could ever top that!! I love that you're keeping it. Too funny!! Chat Icon

The only things we've found are: toy cars, balls stuck in the dirt near the deck, and I found a buried small animal when I was planting bulbs. as I was digging, I hit one of those cute paver stones that kids make, then under that was a rubbermaid container. It was all taped up, looked like it had a little blanket in it. I showed it to DH & we opened it. Bad idea (it was his, not mine.) Ewwww!!!! Never bury something in a container like that. I think cardboard is a much better choice. We Quickly taped it back up and re-buried it. Chat Icon

Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...

the previous owners of the house were whackos, they didn't know how to properly fix anything so the whole house was full of weirdly shaped shelves, things done really sloppily.
their son lived in the basement, and in the ceiling tiles we found:
- a package of really old scalloped potatoes
- tons of sunflower seeds
- a 6 pack of empty bud light can
- $5
- a few joints
- and a used condom

nice huh? I know where they moved to so i wanted to pack it all up and leave it for them with a note 'oh, your son left this behind, thought he might want it'

Re: Found some interesting items in our new home...

Only thing I really have found so far was a box of those children's finger paints from the 80's.

I have a good story though----one of our friend's recently bought a home. He and his wife were cleaning the kitchen cabinets and found a brown paper bag with $10K in cash inside. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

They decided to ask the previous owners about it because they "felt bad" about them forgetting about that much money, and it supposedly turned out to be the former owner's wife's "monthly shopping allowance".

Everyone in our group was like WHY did you say anything to them?

They gave them a $500.00 "reward" for giving it back.

The Burt Reynolds poster is far and away the winner. Nothing can even come close. Congratulations! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We found all sorts of odd stuff in our house when we bought it. Although the house was broom clean, the attic was filled with Methodist hymnals and school books from the 1910s, 20s and 30s - one of the earliest talked about the dangers of smoking cigarettes, so it was known back then. Plus books about farming, plumbing and even much older books with ornate covers filled long dry sermons which had been given to a previous owner in the 1860s. I found an album full of old post cards from the twenties and some family photographs that had slipped behind a mantelpiece, and when we opened a wall we found wadded up newspapers from WWII stuffed around one window to keep out drafts - early insulation. Almost all the books and pictures had been eaten by insects over the years to various extents. A friend with a metal detector located an area with lots of buttons outside so we know where the laundry line used to be long ago, and he found coins back to the 1700's.
