I am so very sorry they were not able to save his leg. Hopefully though having the toxins out of his body will help

As one posted mentioned. Losing his leg may have saved his life. And I think that is the best way to explain it to him.
I do know how you feel. My DH was in a very serious accident and i had to decide to remove the left side of his skull, without knowing if it would be replaced but it was the ONLY thing that would save his life. I will never forget the look on his face when he woke up and we had to tell him his skull was gone. Thank god it was able to be replaced 3 months later.
Remind your brother that he can be fitted for a prosthetic and hopefully live a better life. But at least he will be here to live a life.
