Re: From cosleeping to CIO? (LONGGGG)

Our nite time routine is most nites now that its summer he gets a bath b/c he sweats. We turn off the tv, turn down the lites. He knows right away that once the lights are off its time for bed. Give him his last bottle while he's on the couch.

Most times he's dozing off towards the end of the bottle. Some nites DH needs to pick him up and walk with him a few min. Once he's out he goes in crib. (OR PNP now that its in our room for the summer / ac use). He's usually out by 8 and sleeps to 5:30am. I wish he would sleep longer.

Definitely start doing a nite time routine and get him used to these things so he associates it with bed time.

Re: From cosleeping to CIO? (LONGGGG)

Sounds like the same boat I was in 6 months ago! Hailey went from sleeping through the night at 6 weeks to being up all night to nurse from 4 months to almost 10 months! Chat Icon I also let her co sleep most of the time, just because it was the only way for me to get any sleep at all. I found that she was getting up so much because she was either genuinely hungry or in pain from teething -- she does not have a high threshold for pain. I started making sure that she got enought milk and solid food in the evening hours, her naps were not too close to her bedtime, and she had a relaxing nighttime routine, and her sleep became more regulated. At about 11 months, things started looking up and she started sleeping from 8 -6 and she is still doing that, give or take a half hour or so. Some nights she still does get up, but she is still teething Chat Icon Chat Icon and when she does get up, she is obviously in so much pain, that I feel so bad for her and don't mind getting up to soothe her. I don't know-- every kid is different, but I tried CIO and it didn't work too well for us -- maybe bc my heart wasn't in it, and maybe bc Hailey didn't respond to it quickly enough and I lost patience. Hailey does know how to self soothe for the most part now, and I never did the CIO -- I guess she just taught herself in her own way. I hope this helps! Chat Icon

Re: From cosleeping to CIO? (LONGGGG)

hey hayley! wanted to share my sleep journey with you also Chat Icon

i nursed allison for naps and sleep...and every last one of the million times she would wake up at night. nothingggg helped get her to STTN. i was at my wits end.

when she was teeny tiny, she would nap in her swing, sleep in her crib. she started to not give me good naps in the swing, so i would nurse her and co-nap with her in the bed. all that ended when one time i woke up before she did and snuck to the bathroom. she woke up while i was peeing and rolled off the bed RIGHT as i walked in the room! Chat Icon horrible, i know. after that traumatizing experience i said "i don't care how, but you're napping in the crib from now on" that was at about 5 months i believe. she did great. i nursed her until she was asleep, burped her and laid her down. not your typical "drowsy but awake" but it worked for me. (she's always been a belly sleeper so that helped me to not have to swaddle her and she wouldn't startle herself awake)

once i decided to sleep train her for night time at 7 months, she learned how to pull up on the crib rails, but she wouldn't know how to get down so she would bang her head on the rails Chat Icon i waited until she learned how to get down carefully and then started CIO.

the most important thing that you have to remember when you're doing this is that you're TEACHING him how to fall asleep and STAY asleep. that was allison's problem. i could nurse her to sleep at night, she'd stay down for an hour, then eeeeeevery 45 min she'd be up and she wouldn't know how to go back to sleep except by nursing. it would drive me nuts! i knew she wasn't hungry either. that's just the only way she knew how to go to sleep.

i made sure DH and i were on board then the first night went like this - bath, lotion, pj's, book and bottle. she fell asleep, i shut the door and didn't come back for 10 hours. that first night was hard - but looking back it wasn't as bad as it could've been. she cried, but it was more like whining-crying than all out "i'm hysterical" type of crying.

the second night was the same...only this time she cried a few times throughout the night...maybe 3?

the third night she cried once, and never again.

ever since then she's given me 11-12 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. it's pure BLISS. we're both so much more well rested. (although it took ME a while to learn how to STTN again, haha!) it will be hard but if it's going to kill you to go in there time after time, just muster up all the courage, invest in some good earphones Chat Icon and tough it out. the best way that worked for me was extinction method of CIO - meaning walk out that door and don't come back until the morning. if you stick to your guns and don't cave, he'll be a brand new baby in 3 days.

the thought of hearing her cry at night was sad to me, but the thought of teaching her something that could help both her and myself was too good to pass up and i'm SO glad i did. all this time she was trying to go to sleep but she just didn't know how to.

i recc that when you do do this, you do naps and bed time in the crib the same routine. for naps, dark room, bottle, lovey. for bedtime, dark room, nurse, lovey.

you'll get many different suggestions on how to do CIO, but ultimately, what's important is that you teach loey how to sleep and stay asleep :)

Re: From cosleeping to CIO? (LONGGGG) *NIGHT #1 UPDATE!!!

I am beyond thrilled that it went like that for you! You deserve a great nights sleep. The monitor will help you SO much! I wouldn't wake him to eat, just let him wake on his own.

Tyler goes down at 6:15 and wakes anywhere between 5:30am-6:30am - so between 11-12 hours of sleep a night! Chat Icon

I bet you will find his naps to be longer now also!

You did great! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Dude...... no fair having such a successful first night.Chat Icon Chat Icon

j/k..... CONGRATULATIONS!!!

It should take about 3 days for your supply to adjust. Just pump enough to make yourself comfortable (unless you want to build a freezer stash).

My boobs were ROCK HARD so I pumped around 6:30 for 8 minutes to soften them a bit and fed Loey when he got up at 8:45. How long will it take for my body to adjust to no more night feedings? Should I do anything to help with that?

Also, normally I wake him at 6:15 (while I'm working summer school... 3 more weeks) to BF him before I go to work. Should I still do that?

When I went back to work....if DS was still sleeping before I left I pumped &he got that milk in a bottle when he woke. I NEVER woke him!

I took about a week to adjust to no night feedings. I pumped for a short time 10 minutes at first down to 3-5 minutes over the week.....it gor later & later (first near 2am and then labout an hour later each morning till I no longer needed to do it).

Re: From cosleeping to CIO? (LONGGGG) *NIGHT #1 UPDATE!!!

That's awesome!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon We have not done CIO yet, but have done other things - developing a routine, etc. - that have helped tremendously. Just don't get discouraged if you get more protesting tonight - my DD tends to do great and regress a bit and then do great again when it comes to sleep stuff. Good luck! I plan to CIO soon I think so maybe that'll get rid of the regressions but who knows.

Re: From cosleeping to CIO? (LONGGGG) *NIGHT #1 UPDATE!!!

that's great news.

we found DD slept better in the crib because she needed her space. She doesn't sleep through the night yet, but we are getting longer stretches.

congrats and I hope he keeps it up.

Thanks!

Do you think that 2 naps is enough? I have no clue what his schedule should be like in terms of how many naps & how long he should be awake, & how often to feed him (BF and solids)...

I care! Chat Icon

Sounds like he's doing amazingly well for nighttime!!! YAYYYYY LOEY! Hopefully he catches on for naps too.

Silly question, do you let him "tell" you when he's ready for a nap (signs that he's tired) or are you scheduling a nap for him?

He slept for 11 hours, 25 minutes!

For naps, I'm looking for the sleepy signs... but IDK what we are doing wrong! It's just not working for naps Chat Icon
