Front Load vs. Top Load Washers ??
What's the difference? Which do you like better ?
My machine just broke last night ........I had to replace the dryer a few months ago, and now the washer is shot ........ (We moved into the house last year and knew these were old.......)
Any suggestions?? I really don't want to spend $1500 to do my laundry !!

I have a front loader and I LOVE it...it actually makes doing the laundry very easy. and its great b/c it uses less water than a top loader so we save on the water bill too.

ditto ! I think it holds more too since the agitator isn't in the middle taking up space.

There are top loaders that do not have agitators and are just as efficient as the front loaders. My IL's have a Whirlpool Cabrio top loader and it's pretty good. It's an HE machine and is also water efficient.

I have one and LOVE it too...also that it knows how much water to fill up based on how much clothes you put in

Re: Front Load vs. Top Load Washers ??
i have read tons of reviews online and on here about the front loaders having a mildew smell, and when i checked them out in the store, i saw exactly why it was happening...there is a pocket in the front door where the water collects with a rubber seal, that starts to smell really bad.

Re: Front Load vs. Top Load Washers ??
The Whirlpool Cabrio (top loader) is a great machine - I would have bought it but needed a front loader.
The front loaders ARE susceptible to having a funky odor if you do not make sure the front pocket is dry. The easiest thing to do is to leave the door open after doing a load of laundry to make sure it is dry. It's really not that big of a deal.
I got the Whirlpool front loaders and I love it so far! I hate doing laundry but love all the features and for our space, it works well.

Re: Front Load vs. Top Load Washers ??
When we were looking for a new washer/dryer set, it seemed to me that the front loaders were not as big as the top loaders without the agitator. I went shopping with the intent to get a front loader, but we ended up with a top loader without the agitator. It's also water efficent. The only downside is that I'm short, so it's hard for me to take the wet clothes out of the washing machine, so DH ends up doing it. Hmmmm....Now that I think about it, that's not really a downside!

Well, there is a front loader inmy building, and I can't stand it. If you forget something, you can't just throw it in. And yes, I noticed a mildewy smell also.

If you google, front loading washer and smell
You will come up with so many message boards about it
I Dont think its worth the hassel of having a funky smell...and The Whirlpool Cabrio which is the top loader without the adjitator is actually BIGGER than the front loader cubic feet

I don't have (and doubt I ever will have) a front loading washer... However, that smell is easily avoidable if you leave the door open when the washer is not in use. The seal on the door is air / water tight (it has to be), so the machine won't dry properly if the door is kept shut when not in use. That will cause the mildew / smell. I believe they sell special cleaners you can run through the machine to take care of the problem if you leave the door closed and start getting the smell.
Like I said, I don't own one and don't want one, but I'm pretty sure that is the culprit behind the smell issue.

I totally agree....my DH also loves to do laundry since we got the front loaders. I know Sears was having a sale...buy 2 appliances save 15% at least it is something. I don't know how I did laundry prior to this...they are very energy efficient...the dryer shuts off when the clothes are dry not when the cycle ends.

You are very right. The problem with many message boards (and I looked into it before buying mine) is that people rarely looked for solutions.
We've had ours for a bit now - and I personally love it. We were nervous about the odor but as I said before, you leave the door open for a little bit and it gets dry...no odor.
It truly is no deal breaker.

Re: Front Load vs. Top Load Washers ??
I prefer a top load. They do make energy efficient ones, which I'm dying to get within the next year. Whirlpool, Kenmore - they all have models. I personally hate the look of front load washing machines - they remind me of the laundromat...been there too many times in my life!

Re: Front Load vs. Top Load Washers ??
Thanks for all of your opinions !!
We bought a Fisher & Paykel (Which I admit, I'd never heard of - but the reviews and Consumer Reports write ups were great -) It was the most energy and water efficient top loader - and at 3.7 cubic feet, it's big enough ! - I also didn't want to spend $1400 to do my laundry !! So, this came to $850 w/ everything. I can live w/ thqt -
The possible smell issue aside, I don't like the front loaders b/c I ALWAYS forget something, or the dog steals a random sock as I'm doing the laundry etc - I didn't like the fact that once it starts, I can't add something easily -

Great news! Sounds like you got a great deal.
Just to clarify - some models do have an "add a garment" feature. My whirlpool model does - and it held tremendously! It last for a while, so it's enough time when you forget something.
